“The Short Version” Post Texas 200 Trip
Lovely build and story. I have an old boom furler on my 24' bermuda rigged sloop, the sail shape is poor when furled, and furling is done forwards with a small crank handle by the goose neck, an unfortunate system. Your application of boom furling looks much better, the four sided sail looks much better suited. I really want to build a sharpie one day. I wish we had retained more sea culture here on the thames estuary. An organised mess around in home made boats sounds really fun. Cheers.
I have seen several boats with roller booms in our club. All of them are production boats. I attempted a roller mast on a trimaran I built several years ago but aborted the project for standard reef points. We’re lucky here in Texas that we have a long sailing season and also almost the entire coast of Texas is protected by barrier islands. It makes for some great small boat sailing and exploring.
Make ballcaps and ponytails great again
Hell Yeah!
Thanks for the 'That's a nice little windrider' comment" Was a pleasure meeting you and chatting at a later camp.
Pleasure meeting you also. That was a fun weekend. Been going through all the video. Ziggy will probably release his video on Sunday.
youtube.com/@ziggylavengood?si=qK5A5ryBbiFsALaU I’m pretty sure that Ziggy documented the build on this boat. Cheers
Yes Ziggy did a great job documenting this boat build. It sails amazing. Needs more sails though 😂 he is having a larger mainsail made and is also talking about adding the mizzen soon.
Quel est le lieu de navigation ⛵
Lake Somerville in Texas. It’s a wonderful lake for sailing.
Très belle embarcation . quel plan de fabrication 👍
It’s an Enigma designed by Matt Layden. It’s the little brother to the more popular Paradox.
Very helpful vid, Will!
Thanks Lee. I hope it made you laugh too!
One of the best sailing channel equipment videos that I have ever seen. You did a great sailboat adventure without any expensive equipment. Your sister is an outstanding role model for younger women that are tired of being excluded from "mens" adventures because they are female. Thank you both and I hope you do more ...
Thank you for the comment. We have many more adventures planned. Glad you enjoyed.
Very helpful information, especially the tip about using inductive power banks. What are reef boots? Are they a type of dive bootie? I was thinking of using closed toe water shoes from Teva. Thanks much.
They are a heavy duty boot that helps protect from oyster reefs and shells. The area north of Port Aransas is full of oyster reefs. If you have to get out of your boat for some reason. Which you probably will. You’re going to want some good protection. A lot of people use tennis shoes. Those shoes from Teva will work just be careful these oyster clusters could get in those openings on the sides.
I can't fold them damn tents either!!!! Good Video Will!
Thanks Buddy!
Thank you for sharing. Could you share how you came about deciding to having 70kg cement blocks and 30kg sandbags for the ballast system?
That weight was what was recommended for ballast. It sailed best with at least that amount, more was better since it got the chine deeper in the water. I later went with bottled water instead of sandbags. After I drank the water I would refill the bottles with seawater. The cement blocks were formed in the floor of the boat and easily removable. Also secured in case of a knock down.
@willrobertson14 Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have heard of having water-filled canisters as ballast. It is a good choice especially for cruising long distance. It doubles up as portable water storage without losing precious space onboard.
Many years ago, I went sailing on an AMF Sunfish in Apalachicola Bay, and got caught out in a severe thunderstorm in 50-60 knot winds. All sails should have reef points, I could have used them in that thunderstorm.
I wouldn’t even think about trying the Texas 200 without reef points. I also wouldn’t want to get stuck in a 50 knot storm in a sunfish! We got in a storm this year that was about 35-40 luckily we got the sail down before it got to us. Another hobie capsized and that ended his trip.
Belle présentation et de belles vidéos
Thank you glad you enjoy these videos!
Nice close ups of the Beetle Cat, and sailing!
Thank you. I love the catboats. They are beautiful.
I wish they had gated on all stick shift cars. Itd help a lot of people learning to not money shift
I need one on my Jeep Wrangler. I’m always finding the wrong gear!
@@willrobertson14 is the Wrangler's shifter one of those very loose and sloppy ones?
@@aaronbryan5095yes it was the rubber bushing that was shot. I welded it solid. It still doesn’t shift very well I think it might be the shifter fork assembly in the transmission.
I'm wondering what kind of finish it has on it. Is the hull fiberglassed with cloth or is it just painted? It could even be just a sprit coat of resin and then painted. Curious boatbuilders want to know.
The hull seams are joined with fiberglass tape inside and out. That’s the only fiberglass on the entire boat. I’m not sure if the builder coated the surface before painting with latex house paint. It’s very simple and easy to repair.
Should have probably taken the reefs out.
We should have shaken out the reefs. Yes we should have.
I believe this is the Toon 2. What I like about this particular boat is the "double downhaul" on both sides of the mast. Gives you perfect control of the angle of the sail.
Until owning this boat I had never seen a double down haul. What a great tool. The sail tuning ability with the lug and mizzen is amazing!
Back in the day, I did the 'lesser circle route' that Nathaniel Stone wrote about in his book 'On the Water' in a fiberglass Ghost 13' sailing dinghy with oars added. In hindsight, I should have used a rowing boat and added a sail because I actually ended up rowing nearly a third of the route and the Ghost didn't row particularly well. All in all it was a great 9 month trip in a small boat and the camping was fun and I got to experience some of America's waterways.
@@ronkirk5099 that’s a huge trip! I would love to do an adventure like that. Well done. I will look up the book you mentioned. Thank you
Great story and adventure...bring " the little boat to the Chesapeake...perfect, boundless cruising ...September/ October is best. Thanks for posting
Thanks for watching! I would love to visit that area of the country. I have heard it’s beautiful.
@willrobertson14 let me know if you want to cruise up this way...I'm a retired large sailing yacht Captain and after 44 years in the business, still have not seen it all.
I have been messing around with little sailboats for a very long time and I have to say I'm totally impressed by what you did especially considering you never built a boat before and you were new to sailing. I also liked how you put a lot of information in a short amount of time in your video. I am a very happy subscriber. Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year.
Thank you so much! Merry Christmas to you and your family too. I’ll try to make more videos like this in the future.
I’m kinda bummed I didn’t get to sail in this lovely little boat named after my daughter! I do remember me and Kathy sending Tommy out to get you one TX 200 though! 😂
We can ask Jim if we can take it for a sail.
Nice.
Thanks Michael.
Very cool !!! Merry Christmas from northern British Columbia Canada
Merry Christmas from Texas. Thank you
Nice one, Will. Very cool story and great photos.
Thank you. I may try to make more similar videos.
What a wonderful little sharpie. I bet the leeboards help going upwind when the boat is lightly loaded.
It helped a little bit but it probably wasn’t worth it to install the leeboard. The chine runners were very effective. I wish I still had this boat, I gifted it to another club member here in Texas.
Don’t think I’ve seen a chine runner before. Very interesting. Can you share a little about the boat handling characteristics and what, if anything you might do differently? Thanks for sharing. The magazine cover is definitely cool!
@@timneely946 the chine runners along with the hull design act as a keel. It’s a concept that probably only would work with a small sailboat. The boat needs to be healed over to get the chine deep in the water. Of course you need speed to make it work. I don’t think would change anything about this boat except for I wish I still had it. Gifted it to another club member.
Thanks for the tour!
You’re welcome. Glad you enjoyed
Thinking about building a similar boat, combining a couple of different boat plans, maybe a little larger cabin for sleeping. Cheers
@@BT-is4zb check out his plans. There are some with larger cabins.
"thats what we need to get next year..." You should have bought it!
Unfortunately those things are just a bit out of our price range, but it sure is nice to dream.
@@willrobertson14 Indeed. Im dreaming of a smaller home made rather than a third hull.
@@Aheitchoo I’m sure you probably saw the new to me wooden boat in my other videos. Back to a monohull for us.
"The Dunes" Definitely a special place!
The Dunes rock!
Had expected y'all to be busier than that when putting life jackets on and getting away from shore line. Way easier than the first sloop I ever sailed. I have magined my boat with a leeboard on each side. You answered my questions on mast placements for a small boat. They say the best boats are the ones you build yourself. I chuckled at how long it took you to get sails up. You went easy and it still went up fast. Congrats on your comfortable setup.❤
Thank you! We did take awhile to get going. I guess when we do these type of trips our pace slows down a little bit. Plus when we got home we had to go back to work so we had nothing exciting to look forward to 😁
I really like your boat, and the area you are in. I have Michalak’s original jewel box. I have never sailed it, but it looks like our boats were designed for places like that. It would be cool to sail with folks like y’all. Did you build it yourself?
I didn’t build the boat it was built by Chuck Lienweber. Come join us at next year’s Texas 200. There’s usually a dozen Michalak boats every year. Its my favorite week of the year.
She just has NICE LINES!!!!
Thank you. She is a good looker for sure.

Damn, what a beautiful boat!
Buddy built a nice boat. It took him a year to build. It was really cool getting to go sailing on it.
Why didn't they use the Modified Birdsmouth Spar Calculator? Modified bird's mouth spars have their staves cut differently so that their outside edges fit flush together, creating a clean polygon. T Such an assembly would be much easier to tighten when gluing. It would be enough to just tightly and tightly wrap the rubber band, and all the parts would automatically take the desired position.
I had know idea that existed. That would have been really nice. Thank you for watching. Please check out some of my other videos.
Definitely put more videos of your sailing this rig Is it a flat bottom boat? What kind of speeds can you get in it? Can this boat semi-plane or does the bottom of the boat have to remain flat to the water because of its design?
I’ll work on a good sailing video in the future. It is flat bottom but has bilge panels. It sails like a typical sailboat. I’ve had it above 7mph a couple times but usually cruise 4-5. It’s narrow for its length. Here is some more information on it. duckworks.com/toon19-plans/
Some boats just look right and your boat is one of them.
Thank you. I’m lucky to have this boat. I’m grateful Chuck chose to send it my direction.
Great spot, ty for sharing!
It’s a cool place. One of my favorites. Thank you
It really is a nice little boat especially after seeing all it's hidden little features
Thank you. I’m really enjoying this boat. It’s almost perfect for the area we sail in.
That's an amazing spot. I like the simplicity and space the leeboard gives. Killer video I'm going to have to go back and check out some more videos.
Definitely check out the video in the description. 3 night 4 day trip. It was pretty fun even though we had some rain every morning. I think it rained more in my tent than outside lol
@willrobertson14 oh no lol I'll definitely have to give it a watch

Yes it is. The anchor drug when that northern blew in but the spike did not! Thank you Buddy
Awesome
Thank you for watching
Unimpressed.
I’m sorry.
Keith must be having bad day@@willrobertson14
@@tomwaite4594 we all have bad days
I really like the design of this boat! Storage under the seats, the open anchor locker, nice wide deep cockpit, safe access to rigging and halyards, and that huge transom compartment is nice too.🤙⛵ Does the cover keep water out of the cabin if you take a wave over the bow?
I’ve never sailed it with the cover over the cabin. It stays pretty dry in rough water in there. I’ve sailed it in a thunderstorm pouring down rain 😂 and we had to bail when we got to camp. I’m really excited for this year 200. This is a super shallow water boat that’s lightweight. Don’t have to worry about running aground you just get out and float it back to deeper water. Plus we can carry all the ice cold beer we want!
Very interesting, purpose built design. However, I can’t get my head around the asymmetry, off set sails and such.
Think of it as a compromise. The designer of this boat often will design boats to peoples specific needs. This boat spends most of its time doing multi day camping trips in the very shallow back bays of Texas. Take a look at the Toon19 plans on Duckworks, there is a pretty good write up on it. Thank you for the interest. Also check out my video of us sailing this boat on a 3 night 4 day trip ua-cam.com/video/4oxu3zsHjN4/v-deo.htmlsi=nfOZ9LePXa7jtOwr
@@willrobertson14 it’s purpose built design is genius. The only criticism I have is with me not being able to look past the asymmetry.
7:08 That is my favourite sort of sailing. Ambling along, taking your time and cruising to the next anchorage. Love it👍
Yes my favorite also. That was a perfect day of sailing that ended at a perfect camp for the night. Thank you
cool
Thank you
For a boat to be a yawl the mizzen mast must be behind the rudder, thats the definition I've always knew it as
Thank you for the information. It’s a confusing subject for me since I’m very new to this type of rig.
@@willrobertson14 I've heard people say if the sail extends past the rudder then it's a yawl, but i was told by old fellas that the mast must be behind the rudder post
Where is this Will?
It’s a spot about 6 miles south of the bird island basin boat ramp that is located on the backside of the Padre Island National Seashore in Texas. It’s often referred to as the “Dunes” and is one of my favorite places to sail camp.
Nice share
Thank you Michael. Enjoying this boat.
