Off Grid Entertainment - Free Electricity with a Solar Generator
it's unnerving but unnecessary for smaller systems.
When putting the PowerPole connector terminals on don't twist the copper strands after stripping off the PVC. Keep them as straight as possible. This makes putting the terminal on a lot easier. It does take a little practice to make sure all the strands make it into place, but it makes for a much superior crimp in the end. When you twist them, the chances of them binding and not sliding into place a lot greater. This leaves less of them along the length when you crimp.
Nice project!
cool no pouch cells 💪💪💪
Glad you got it fixed and working am a lover of Sungold inverter hoping to get one someday
Well, if you're a decent electrician, this should never happen in the first place because you should always have a breaker or a fuse between your battery and your inverter and the breaker would be open or the fuse would be pulled, and you would never create a spark. So anyone that wires directly to an inverter with no overcurrent protection is a bozo!
I usually use a small 12 volt bulb. the bulb starts out bright, then, dims down. If you mistakenly connect the inverter backward, the bulb remains full bright, indicating that the capacitor is not charging, and without damage to the inverter. Connecting the inverter to the battery out of polarity is disastrous! A resistor is fine, but, you really can't tell when the capacitors are fully charged, and it isn't quite as obvious if the polarity is reversed. The lightbulb will let you know if you didn't get a good connection as well.
Great tip!
The problem is less the size of the spark, it's more that electronics don't like large currents, even briefly.
I've never had a problem connecting the battery... The connection snaps a little and then moves on
Im sure this batteries made from old batteries
LiTime does not do that. I have seen a different brand that did.
I love this
About how much would this run
With the price of batteries coming down, about 4500$
I have never heard of a resistor charging anything, but I have heard about DISCHARGING capacitors with resistors. Am I missing something?
The capacitors in the inverter draw in a huge rush of current and causes the spark. The resistor just slows it down with no spark.
Sharpen a number 2 pencil on both ends, does the same thing as a resistor
Do that with a 48-volt inverter
YOU SHOULD DO GROUND AFTER POSATIVE
LOVE YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR 😂😂😅
I like the spark when plugging up power to ebike.......it lets me know its got all its needed connections getting power
the current price difference between the regular and the low temp 100ah battery is $11 ($216 and $204.89). If I plan on having my battery indoors next to my Bluetti AC70 for extended capacity with a mini split heater running, would I ever need low temp protection in Houston Texas? If I need to I can build a little case for it and use some foam board insulation to help keep it warm if need be, but I just wonder which is best for me.
If its indoors, I don't think you need a low temp protection battery.
@@proficientprepper sounds good. Ty for the reply
Stop being a baby a little spark never hurts
So, there's a spark. Big deal.
Don’t shut the MPPT controller battery breaker off with the PV breaker on you got lucky when you did in this video. Have fun stay safe.
😂😂😂😂😂
Couldn't you also just turn the inverter off first?
It was off. The spark is from a sudden onrush of current charging the capacitors inside.
@@proficientprepper Ah, I got the spark with mine the first time, but it was flipped to on, i turned it off and it didn't spark the next time.
Yes, that's normal. The capacitors will stay charged for some time and won't spark. But after time the capacitors will deplete and spark again.
Excellent Video, thank you for sharing
Thank you!!
😂
I'm going to need 4-6 of these if I'm going to power my daily Reddit trolling.
Just what I was searching for, so a 12v 200ah battery is kinda equal to a 24v 100ah battery
Yes, but these 24v 200ah batteries I'm using are like 4 - 12v 100ah batteries.
"I want to touch the outside of the nuts" Big pause mane lol 😂
For a 2K and under inverter, it's not necessary. As you just saw, no damage to your inverter.
You should always hook up the negative last. That reduces the spark.
Doesn't matter, electricity runs in a circuit, therefore it will be the same amount on either side.
Fast short tap tap tap x3.. it will be fine
The resistor will NOT, repeat NOT charge the capacitors. The capacitors retain a charge from the last time connected. The resistor will DISCHARGE the capacitors. But it's no big deal either way.
You've never done it before have you.
@@johnwyman6126 With about 65 years of electronics experience in audio, radio, and just about every type of electronics, including designing amplifiers, back in the day an smart/fast charger for nicads, speed controllers, automated equipment, there is little I have not done before.
@@saxmusicmail You don't connect from positive to negative on the inverter, discharging the caps. You connect one cable first, then before connecting the second cable to the inverter, temporarily use the resistor between the battery cable and the inverter in order to charge the capacitors if the inverter has not been used for a while.
You're misunderstanding what he is talking about. The inverter has a large capacitor in parallel with its 12Vdc input. If you direct the 12Vdc input when the capacitor is discharged, it will momentarily act as a short until the capacitor sufficiently charges. That causes a huge current spike when the inverter is plugged in. That's what causes the the sparks. Depending on the output impedance of the 12V power source, that current spike can do damage to the connectors where the contract occurs. The current can melt the metal of the contracts causing pitting and/or welding of the contracts. To prevent that, the video is suggesting pre-charging the capacitor by initially placing a resistor inline with the power connector. Once the capacitor has been pre-charged, it will no longer act as a momentarily short and draw the huge current spike.
Because you’re not supposed to connect the negative first. Always connect positive first and it won’t spark.
Where do you people keep getting this wrong information?
Hello there! Pricewise talking... How much will be the budget for the settings? Thanks
This entire 24v system cost me about $5k. The batteries alone were just under $3k and the inverter/charger I got on sale for $895. Batteries have come down quite a bit in price. So you could build this a little cheaper now.
@@proficientprepper Thanks for the information. 👍
Those inverters should already have some kind of inrush current limitation built in like switching power supples, right? You shouldn't have to do this, but I guess it helps stop the capacitors from acting like a short circuit at the beginning and therefore eliminate sparks completely.
Don't talk about Inrush current limiting. 😂 thing is 1)higher cost.2)idk. Well cost it is!
The sparks aren’t much for a small inverters. It’s them 5kva and 10kva that you will get a really big spark. But it doesn’t damage anything it’s just a convinces thing
I just got the Bluetooth with low temp protection. It’s pretty gnarly.
If you like solar projects, consider the EG4 Solar Mini Split. DIY Installation. Comes with 4 PV panels. Solar only or you can connect to grid for 24 hour use. Heats and cools. Takes about 6.5A AC or Solar to run, compared to 30A for a central AC, that is a no brainer. Definitely supplements the central AC, it does not come on nearly as much and does not stay on as long. I love it.
Sounds interesting. I'll take a look
I use the wire shelving units to mount everything on and I have the lower shelves for lead-acid batteries. Some of these shelving units have wheels so I can move it around if necessary. I mount a 3/4 inch plywood to the back of the shelving unit for the charge controller, inverter, and all that. I have 12V and 24V systems set up now with 2, 4 and 8 batteries depending on what it is used for. I like stacking the cheap Eco-Worthy 30A charge controllers and I have 3 and 4 of them per system. Cannot overload them that way. You can build your own automatic transfer switch using the 80A relays with 120VAC coils if you only want grid backup. You can use the Eco-Worthy Charge Controller programming for the battery monitor and Alexa relays for the timing functions if you need it and an 80A relay with a 12V or 24V coil for a transfer switch.
Thanks for that information. Sounds interesting.
I just trim the insulation, twist the wire together and cap it with a wire nut. Its not like high voltage that will kill someone. As long as you have a tight connection, youre not going to have any problems. No fancy wire connectors are really needed.
Give the link to buy this inverter
amzn.to/3zukjQp
I thought you had actually built an inverter, which is what I've been looking for. Anyone have a link to that video?
With Large Inverters you will get a much larger spark and can burn out the board. Ask me how I Know.
What happened? I'm assuming nothing good.
Positive goes on before the earth wire,
Seasick 🤢
Great video very informative!!
Thank you!
If you have accidentally shorted a car battery you know how bad it.can.be
That looks like something I’ll see when I plug something in an outlet at my grand parents house
Great review! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
