The HP hose broke off and left behind the thread side in the body of first stage. After others failed to remove all that was left was a soft brass nub. I had to drill out and extract the remaining nub.

Thank you for this video. Very helpful. I have a dumb question? We just purchased a pair of new Sherwood Logic computers. We did a pool test and everything checked out. But the battery in one of the computers has died. Do these computers turn off automatically or did we fail to turn one off and it drained the battery? I just put new batteries in both of them. Any advice would be very helpful. Thank you!
@@JohnPaulRiger yes the computer will automatically shut down. Once you dive the computer it will remain on until it detects the N2 levels in your body return to normal “as per your dive profile”. If you activate the unit by pressing the buttons for dive planning or log book review, it will remain on for 15 to 30 mins. Thanks for watching.
How long does it take on average for a complete service from disassembly to reassembly and final testing? When I was rebuilding full time it was taking me about 1:30 to do all 3 stages on Scubapro and Atomic. I always thought it should be faster, but was curious to see what a more experienced tech does.
One and a half hours is very acceptable, customer drops his reg off at 9am and returns 10:30 am to dive the afternoon, wow that's awesome. I've worked with and trained a lot of reg techs. Uninterrupted 90 min service is inline with what I expect and would say it's pro level. Someone working faster, I would question the integrity of the service. I have timed myself and completed a 3 stage service under 45 mins. , however this is not my everyday objective. There're times I'm multi tasking taking care of phone calls, and walk-in customer etc... this can lead to 5 hour service or I start today and finish tomorrow.
What would you use if you didn't have an ultrasonic?
@@azymasger9088 Soaking in vinegar and brushing with a brass brush afterwards another soaking in baking soda and water to remove vinegar residue. This will help but you might not get the same results as an ultrasonic cleaner.
Oh, I didn't think I was so old... as I dived with that kind of gears 50 years ago and still used the Fenzy "horse collar" some years ago. Just recently I moved to sidemount with new equipment.
Side mount has gained a lot of popularity, I kinda like also.

@@monteshugart-v5e not as of now, the thing about steel tanks is the hot dip galvanizing. The EPA is very strict about the waste, they didn’t make it cost effective to continue making galvanized tanks. So the tank companies got of the steel business.

There's no proof of hydro test weakling cylinders, however excessive hot fills has proven to be detrimental to the integrity to the cylinder. Thanks for watching.

OK, so I know the 'plastic' makes it look sexy, but why oh why - it's a moisture trap and thus corrosion. Surely Aqualung can make a 1st stage without lots of plastic craq on it and improve the longevity of their regs.
The brass bodies are CNC to remove as much weight in metal as possible, the plastic just builds up the body for ascetic appeal. Thanks for watching
Can you tell me if a scuba tank is over 40 years old and looks great, how will it explode? If thay onley last 40 years what signs can i look for so i dont have a Possible grenade

How safe is to use a sand blaster on the aluminum tank to remove the paint without compromising our tank’s integrity?
@@DiveScapeTVa sand blaster can be too aggressive because there could be some loss of aluminum. Loss of aluminum will compromise the integrity of cylinder. A gel type paint stripper is a better option.

Hi. I have brand new 2023 scuba tank which was refilled once- inside it is like new- but it has approx 5gr of oil in on the bottom which stinks with old olive oil. It was refilled once. What shall i use to clean it from oil? Are there some rust protectors you add inside tanks after cleaning from oil? I have bunch of isopropyl alcohol and denaturation water.
Oil is very difficult to remove, Dawn soap warm water, Blue Gold detergent, Simple Green Cleaner are my favorite ways of cleaning tanks. You may to also tumble with glass beads. The valve needs to be cleaned as well, by disassembly and cleaning individual parts.
This is on my bucket list! To avoid silting, you can use frog kicks.

Dacor 2250 after tumbling etc has clean rust pock marks approx 40 percent of tank safe to full fill or partial fill 1200-1600 psi?
40% is a large amount of corrosion, anything over 20% is considered a fail. I can't recommend to continue service on that cylinder. Thanks for the question.

Very professional and simple plus educational You mention that the Hydro test is every 5 years Unfortunately In Australia the most over governed over legislated diving industry in the world I am not sure if it is the aim of the government to destroy the recreational diving industry in Australia Many dive shops are closing in Australia not due to safety but excessive bureaucracy I personally have been a Dive Instructor since 1983 I no longer teach diving in Australia I am sure the diving industry in America is as safe or safer than Australia Its a shame we have great diving If you are interested to see what we dont want for the diving industry in other parts of the world have a look at To show you how absurd this legislation is A recreational SCUBA Instructor must have a Commercial Diver medical form a dive physician Imagine if you had a dive school like I did with 50 cylinders and they have to be hydro tested every 12 months plus an eddy flow test For reference www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/your-industry/diving-and-snorkelling/diving-laws
How does this work with a let’s say a FABER hot galvanized steel with SP13488 specification? Is it tested the same way or do all galvanized cylinders done differently and only look at the REE as being pass fail?

Faber Hot dip gal. tanks are now coming into their first hydro testing. As of the current date Faber has not published any special testing procedures other than the 10% rule. I suspect as testers fail these tanks Faber will petition DOT just like ( Worthington & PST) for special testing using REE and multiple pretest. Galvanized cylinders have a false fail on first and sometimes second test, this is why special procedures must be applied. I've made several inquiries about this issue with Faber Galvanized tanks, so far nothing.

Your tank most likely had a false fail, I've seen this many times with galvanized steel.
The owner is one dive buddy I don’t want. If that’s how he/she cares for their gear I don’t want them anywhere near mine or my friends gear/life
I’ve owned my own tanks for years and none of them look as bad as those ie 1995 manufacturers date and they still look new. Someone is totally neglectful

No, a light tumble with O2 safe cleaner is needed.
What is the total cost of the equipment needed to conduct the hydrostatic test and what are the certifications needed to conduct those test? Thank you.
You can get those answers from Hydro-Test the company which sells and trains users on their equipment.

So why do dive shops charge for a hydro AND a VIP?????? When VIP is included in hydro and is of lesser value ? Greed. Simply a systematic rip-off.

You should not be scraping off any of the oxidation on aluminum tank. All what will happen is that the aluminum that you expose is going to interact with the oxygen in the ear and create new oxidation that's going to preferentially eat into the aluminum of the tank. With aluminum tanks leaving it be. I'm speaking about this from the perspective of the mechanical engineer.
I strongly disagree with your statement when it refers to scuba cylinders. Cylinders are a flexible container holding 3000 psi or more, which can and have been explosive when improperly inspected. Oxidation/corrosion, “lost of metal” will lead to pitting in the alloy, a single pit measuring .06 of an inch will fail the cylinder, but an structural column with the same pit can remain in service. Please keep in mind we in the scuba industry are formally trained, I personally have 40 years of training and experience we are also regulated by, Department of Transportation (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Compressed Gas Association (CGA) Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and OSHA . In addition we are mandated to have continual education and certification every 3 years. Did you know the person filling or inspecting your scuba tank must be trained and certified every 3 years? (CFR180.205) Here are some quotes from our training text to help you understand our methods. “ The primary purpose of cleaning a cylinder, whether inside or out, is to ensure all metal surfaces are exposed to the inspector’s eyes”. “The entire exterior of the cylinder must be exposed to the inspector and not concealed”. “If corrosion is found on the exterior, under the coating then the entire coating should be removed”.

Heading to UK from Spain to train and certify in visual tank inspections. Just been playing with an endoscope camera ... wasn't as easy as I thought to actually see the interior so maybe a mirror is better after all. great top see yoru idea on the internal devices to clean off small specks of rust. thanks for sharing your video

Great video thank you. I rebuilt an M1 it locks at 125 and slowly drifts up to 140 but stays there and doesn’t move beyond that. Thoughts? Thank you! MB
125 to 150 is the acceptable range… slow drift is common Cycling the first such as turn off supply pressure purging and back on. Repeatedly cycling pressure will create a impression on the piston seat and should lock up IP.

well, now i know how the neck of my tank got cracked, im thinking all this testing is just doing more harm than good. its like, do you change your oil and then drive like its a racecar
Yeah, I was literally just watching and was thinking the same thing. I went to the comments to see if anyone else was wondering how hard it is on these tanks, just to have it tested. I am trying to research tanks for paintball and pcp air rifles. I know the carbon fiber paint ball tanks are given a life span of 15 years, but I feel like getting them tested every 5 years is harder on them than just being careful with how you use them. And all the things I read on forums say they have never heard of a carbon tank failure in the field. Maybe a cheap regulator failure but never a tank. I read about a place purposely gouging a tank 50% through the side and filling it to 13,000 psi before it failed . But I don't think they are even catastrophic failures. I think it's more of a slow leak, and maybe the fibers start to unravel. I just think if you take care of them and not have them filled by amateurs that dont filter the water out or fill them up fast, they shouldn't have a catastrophic failure. No one will ever admit it, though.
Do you have a recommended o'ring grease to use? Or would any o'ring grease work?
silicone grease is best. Keep in mind all you need is to wet the ring, don't over lube it because it can slip out of place.

GUESS WHAT ? just two weeks ago .... a dive shop owner freaked out when I brought my three old tanks from 1979 in for visuals and I knew two needed Hydro . He was almost in tears telling me they were dangerous and they CAN"T be inspected or filled ...So I took them to another shop and they said - we know that dive shops in Florida refuse to service the older tanks BUT...YES they would service and fill them !
I'm not surprised by the shop owner's reaction, as per DOT we can still inspect, test and fill along with visual eddy test. However in Florida we've had multiple tanks rupture and seen first hand the consequence of neck cracks. It's up to the individual shop to make that decision. Thanks for the comment.
the dive shop i go to will send the tanks out for a hydro and then do a visual ! I asked why not do a visual first ??? they said thats how they do it !
I have shops that send me tanks for hydro without doing VIP first and many times I fail them before testing. Doing the VIP first makes sense, this way you can catch a fail and not even bother with sending it out.

I had a 10.4 litre 232 Bar Alloy 6061 tank (85 c.f.) fail a visual for a crack in the neck - DO NOT think that new alloys are not susceptible to load cracking, IF you leave a scuba tank full long enough it will fail at the weakest point. I now only dive steel cylinders which are looked after better than my dive computer, and IF I'm not planning to dive for 3 months or more, I leave them at 50 Bar (500 psi) so as not to put unnecessary stress on the cylinder.
Sometimes a fold in the neck can be mistaken for SLC neck crack. I've seen many shops confuse folds with SLC in 6061. I'm not saying that it can't happen but the chances are slim, an eddy current test will confirm a SLC.
