I shot this video in 1982 I think, did anyone spectate or compete? Stages are Pagham, Calbourne "Steps" at Newbarn Farm, and lastly Parkhurst Forest on the Isle of Wight. Hope you enjoy.

I see the car starts of in Arthur Street. I was born and grew up literally round the corner in Pellhurst Road. When I last visited Ryde a few years ago they still hadn't the roads from the time this video was recorded. Regarding the Arcade, it was a great place for buying second-hand records and books.

Firstly, does anyone have any 90s videos of Union Street or more specifically Victorian Arcade? I'd love to see the shops in there again, CB games is where my friend and I spent a lot of time buying and trading games. We loved it, sometimes there every day of the week and even more than once a day if we changed our minds about a game we just bought from there. Great video here though. The road layouts were so much better back then, not so much traffic lights, traffic and parked cars. These days driving on the island is awful, now it's just rammed with traffic all day every day, and constant huge commercial vehicles.

No just a trip around the outskirts of Ryde. The Island is much larger, you should visit.

Thanks for this. I was looking for something about the classic 1970 IOW festival site and got hooked on this. Amazing how steep those back streets are, like San Fransisco.

There was a lot less traffic then, the roads seemed easier to use, no lights at Queens Rd,👍The Swanmore post office and the Partlands Pubs, Ashey Rd didn't have the priority traffic mess. or the roundabout at Smallbrook. Nice trip down memory lane. And your parking space was still there when you got back.😄

Thanks for this Geoff. I was born in the 60s on George st near the seafront. Moved away but still visit occasionally. I plan to recreate your film when I take the motorcycle over next. I have to admire the stability of your video, not an easy feat with the old vhs cameras.

This is 1982, my Stepfather was driving the red Escort mk1 at 0:19 He retired on the last stage in Parkhurst Forest with car trouble. The cameraman has captured me and my Mum; I'm the blond kid wearing blue jeans and hoodie, then Ten years old, my Mum is leaning against the Escort in blue jeans & jumper, the other two guys in jeans and white tee's were mechanics. Cheers for sharing.

It was 1982, i was in the TR8. Thanks for putting this up, my one and only trip to the IOW rally, We finished 2nd O/A, David Maslen won it in one of his dads' Gp 4 BD Escorts, he was fortunate though as he went off in one of the Parkhurst [ best stage ] stages and lost 2 mins. Mysteriously that stage later got cancelled. A VERY well run and organised Rally, albeit a tad rough in places.

It was 1982 but Mark was 3rd overall. I was co-driver in car 10 ( Kingswell / Piper 1760cc Mk1 Escort) and we finished on 2247 seconds - 1 second in front of the TR7 on 2248. However we were a local crew and James Kingswell was a farmer so he knew his way around the Islands farm tracks!

The car driving the videographer, has to have belt drive. Surly a veromatic , DAF, Ford?. The place has changed somewhat. The trees have grown and the neatly cut hedges around Ryde are now overgrown and bullshitted about randomly in the local and national press. Shame we changed.

This is so fascinating, feel a mixture of happiness and sadness watching this. Used to live on the IOW as a kid (Weston Lane, Totland Bay) around '93, I would've been about 5. I can't help but feel that life just looks and feels better back then - looks a beautiful day! Must feel particularly awesome for you to watch this back. Wonderful journey this - thank you, and best wishes!

I wasn't around for any of the 90's and by the looks of this, ryde had a massive glow up since then, but we've also lost some treasures
