So fascinated to listen to my ex next door neighbour talk of the housing estate we both grew up on, although Andy must be about 8 years older than I, and as he was already starting to get a name for himself with the Helium Kids, it was only ever on the rare occasion that he'd speak to me. One of those occasions, was me sitting on the door step during the summer holidays, rather bored, and Andy appearing with a magnifying glass where he promptly taught me how to pop ants. I doubt he'd remember that but I do. I was in awe as a kid , from listening to him practice through the wall of our adjoining bedrooms, buying Black Sea as the band went from strength to strength while I was serving in the Military to the present day, serving as a teacher of English, Drama and sometimes - art and music. Andy is an inspiration.
Thanks for presenting this. Anytime Andy is interviewed, I hang on his every word. He’s not just a National Treasure in his native Great Britain, he’s a planetary treasure. Thanks again 🙏
If Partridge ever allowed Rundgren to produce another album it would be like Herman Munster producing Dr. Evil. Mentioning AUTUMN ALMANAC brought a smile and a lump in the throat.
The thing i take away from this excellent interview is how Andy has a very special angle on how he looks at art.I Think that's one of the most important things that makes his paintings and music so exceptional and amazing. Thanks again for another insightful and intelligent conversation Gregg.
When Andy describes not wanting to kill the magic of a favourite song, like 'Strawberry Fields", by dismembering it into it's component parts completely resonates with me.
I can listen to Andy go on about anything, I was anticipating this art book compilation and I’ll have to get myself one. Another great interview Greg. Thanks to you and Andy for this.
Overall, love Steven Wilson's 5.1 mix of The Big Express with one big exception. The electric guitar in "I Remember the Sun" is pushed to the rear channels, losing much of its power. Likely have preferred an alternating front channel assault.
I've been recording and releasing music for over 30 years and XTC remain a big influence , thanks Andy . Funny working on a song now that so reminds me of your vocal melodies , wasn't intentional it just come out.,
Hey Greg! Thanks for doing another one of these with AP - you always ask the perfect musician questions. I was so fortunate to have Andy write half of my forthcoming solo album with me (The Concrete Jangle - on Little Steven Van Zandt's label, Wicked Cool Records). In fact, 2 of our co-writes are here on UA-cam; "Fourth Of July" ua-cam.com/video/G6PB0I5jkLg/v-deo.htmlsi=SV4sO0vpva7ortlG & "Shoot Out the Stars" ua-cam.com/video/2jqS80X4TNo/v-deo.htmlsi=3IA_l3k5ZdgB-AKa I can attest to Andy's "visual" method of writing because that is exactly what happened on the songs we wrote together. I met him through our mutual pal Steve Lillywhite back around 2015. When I first spoke to Andy he said that I stole his dream job, playing lead guitar in the New York Dolls 😎🎸 - a band that I made 4 records with from 2004-2010. I'm not really a garage-rock guitar player though - I studied jazz with Ted Dunbar, Kenny Barron, Barry Finnerty, Dennis Sandole and have made a living doing recording sessions & live music work in NYC with folks like Paul Simon, Maceo Parker, Delmar Brown, Peter Wolf, Robert Gordon, Billy Squier, Willy DeVille & others. I'd love to have a musical chat with you one day... Cheers! SC
@@greggbendian6250 Really?? Were we in any music classes together? Man, that's such a distant memory... You must've taken some good classes (and been a serious student) because you know your shit man!
Gregg also a friend of Andy's been to Swindon and made Andy a custom amp. Question... ATMOS what's your thoughts? I design high end audio... well really anything that plays music. Digital, Analog, Tubes are better so forth. Anyway, so I understand Apple's usage with Airpods because they needed something and since ATMOS is old the DSP required to reproduce this. BUT!!! What about the rest of us that have 2 speakers and none of the processing of ATMOS then what do we get from it?
We are actually examining this concept for a possible ATMOS release of "The Eternal" with me and Tim Motzer. Want to demo the headphone experience and I will get back to you from there. There may be a an audience out there...
@@greggbendian6250 Gregg, if you have standard headphone system then what is going to decode the ATMOS? This is what I keep saying to Steven Wilson. I make really $$$ stereo equipment. It's all 2 channel but if you look at the Big Express release party they are using something crazy like 20.10.4. How realistic is that for the common person with a stereo system? We did a survey a while back and a lot of people watched movies with 2.1. Only 3% of those polled had 5.1 and only 0.08% had 7.1 or above. Now who is adding the facing up speakers? Got me, but if you look at Sweetwater and basic ATMOS systems your looking a big money.
I dare you to close your eyes and listen to any song from Skylarking (except Dear God, great song but sticks out like a sore thumb on this album) and tell me this man doesn't paint with music.
‘The Big Express’ wasn’t good enough to merit such precious reissue treatment (nor lip service), and the synesthesia stuff strikes me as obtuse, irrelevant, and more than a bit pretentious… I thought ‘25 O’clock ‘ would be given its due in this encore Partridge entry. All that said, I do appreciate your posting this interview.
the big express is an excellent record. the "precious reissue treatment" does it a great service, particularly with the new mix which gives it a whole new life.
great interview, Greg. Loved XTC since Dave Gregory joined the band. So many great records, but for me gorgeous Nonsuch one of the best albums ever made

I'd suggest he's an international treasure :)
Apple Venus is criminally underrated. A pop masterpiece, right up with Skylarking.
So great to see Andy! Thank you for posting. Love him so much!!

Thank you and thanks for listening!
One of the best musicians and songwriters of all time without a doubt
When Andy describes not wanting to kill the magic of a favourite song, like 'Strawberry Fields", by dismembering it into it's component parts completely resonates with me.
Me too!
It is no more than willfully not understanding is really just playing games with yourself. I don’t agree with this notion
Simple superstition
If this is indeed killing something..it’s the willful ignorance
Absolutely delighted to see another interview with Andy. What a treat. Thanks, Gregg.
My pleasure! Thanks for tuning in.

I'm just here for any snide comments Andy may have about Rick Wakeman.
Ha!

David Lord was recently prosecuted for running a brother from his home in Bath.
Would have been great if he had picked up his guitar. Some of those records , wow !

I really don’t dig the whole Steven Wilson rewriting improvement committee industry.
I want artist intentions at the time of creation. I don’t get it.

"The Big Express" not good enough? Well, well. We will do an All-Dukes episode. Andy has suggested this.
