This additional tube is a real experts solution ! Me bows 🛐. I bought an 84 VT500c last year and at the moment continue plowing my way through special heritage left by previous owner (blown ign.coils, no temp. indicator, sqeezed wires to the coils (the blue), leaking thermostat housing . . . It's a very fine engine in general, but the peripheral aggregates. . . hell how he abused his bike. I will look for more instructions on your channel. Thanks man a lot !
Thanks for the accolade, don't think expert fits the bill, go for well meaning amateur who's been monkeying around with bike for many, many years 😂 Don't forget to subscribe to see any new videos Thanks Paul
@@paulbell9025 instantly subbed 🔔 Found lots of interesting vids also about VTs 😍 Cu below another vid 😃
@@farrider3339noticed your comment about a temp gauge, I fitted an aftermarket item. The VT I'm (eventually) building is a street tracker so originality is not important to me. Quite a lot of other mods and reworked parts. paul.abelmc@gmail.com
@@paulbell9025 yeah I definitely saw yours is Paul style built. Good ! Mentioning the dead temp gauge was just for the list of fkd up parts. The sensor was ill. Twas a pain in the ass removing it from the thermostat housing 😂. Saturday I will start removing the engine from the frame bcs one of the four rockerbox screws is torn off. New gaskets up there. Plus a fresh screw will hopefully dry the engine's exteriors. Wish me happy rusted screw removal. Silencer and exhaust will be thrilling I guess 😱. Cheers
Hope it all goes well, down pipes on mine came off quite easy, couple of days previous flood threads with penetrating fluid.
i done a static balance while i had my carbs off doing the cam tensioner recon i will be doing this just to be sure 🍻
What you call the air screw mixture is actually the fuel mixture screw
Oh Christ, major fcuk by me, I apologise and prostrate myself in your pendant glory. Went well though, almost like the adjustment screw didn't care what it was called. Thank you so much for your concern

Do u have a link to buy the kit from big guy ? Thanks in advance
No problem. Lots available on eBay and from Yambits. I prefer to use Tourmax brand for aftermarket parts, never let me down yet. Thanks for the comment, hope all goes well. Safe miles
i think my slave cylinder is starting to fail as you can here the rattle everytime you release the clutch lever...this is my first yamaha xjr and i wasnt sure if it was a clutch overhaul but thankfully not after watching your video...seems an easy job so well in and thanks 🙏🏻
Thanks for the comments buddy, much appreciated. If it does turn out to be the clutch it's not that bad of a job. If you are not already aware I did a clutch replacement a while back, there is a video of it. Safe miles 👍

@@paulbell9025 ok paul i appreciate that you have a good night 🍻
Dumb question alert. I have clutch slip too which I'm about to sort out, but when you took yours apart I was expecting to see 6 small actual springs somewhere as seen on the upgrade kit available online. I'm confused now. Does that convex/concave plate with the 'fingers' take the place of springs? I've read that people double up on the springs as a cheap ugrade......do they mean putting two of those finger plates on? I also had a slave seal leak which I fixed using you other video as reference so cheers for that 👍
I think I was expecting more of a traditional bike clutch set up as well. I did price the conversion to a six spring set up but at the time it was three times more expensive than the aftermarket spring I fitted, think it was EBC. Also the standard set up works fine when not worn. It did say the clutch lever would be heavier to pull, in practice I did not notice any real difference. Done around 8k miles since the video with no problems 😁
@@paulbell9025 Thanks. Will have a look at one of those.
Thankyou mate I really got alot out of this run through 🤞👍
Hi Peter, thank you for your positive comments hopefully the video will help if you ever work on a XJR. Done around 8k since the work on the bike with no issues with the clutch, must have done something good 😁 Safe miles buddy
@@paulbell9025 cheers mate. I own an XJR12OOR and am having exactly the same issue so I'm thinking pressure plate. This video is a great help for me 😁
Hi Paul, does the Push rode need lubbing up before putting it back in? Cheers
I always do, wipe down, polish with fine wire wool and metal polish and then a light smear of lube, my preference is copperslip or similar. Not sure if it's totally necessary, but it sure as hell don't hurt to. Safe miles
What is the clearance at the bottom of your sliders in your carb?
Hi Vanna, the slide height is not a 'set' dimension as such. The height/clearance is established when setting the tick-over of the engine. My process is to synchronise the pair as in the video and then adjust the tick-over of each carb separately (run each cylinder separately) and then both together adjusting at each stage. When you achieve the rpm you want them recheck the synchronisation. Sounds more complicated then it actually is. Two stroke engines more of a black art rather than an exact science 😮
VERY helpful! I’ve had many 2 strokes (they are definitely my preference) but have only had a twin when I had my RD which was years ago. For some reason I have just been having the hardest time! I was DEFINITELY over thinking it. Thank you, I needed that extra boost of confidence to get me going. Thank you! Ps. Liked & Subscribed! Thanks from Denver, Colorado USA Savanna 😊
@@123Vanna456 Hi Savannah. Thanks for your comments, vintage two strokes certainly are fun, twins even more. Setting them is more of a black art than an exact science and is getting lost in the passage of time Be great to know how things work out with the bike, feel free to drop me an email anytime. Safe miles 😁
Definitely was helpful my 750 is doing the same thing
So common a fault, spares are seemingly only to be found on the backs of unicorns
Hi Paul I have gt250 1975 ,just bought it flooded into cassing, drained it out left it ,in meantime I got carb bowls with overflows .iam just wondering about starting it up .do you think it will be OK or shall I remove crank and have a look .can u help at all
Had my GT do pretty much the same thing, in fact it hydraulic locked after been left overnight. If memory serves me correct there is a drain plug in the engine main cases on RH side. So after draining and 'venting' the motor I put some oil directly in the bores via the spark plug holes, made sure the autolube was full and kicked it over until my leg went numb. When I came to actually run it I used an auxiliary tank with pre-mix. Probably overdone but no seized motor, plenty of smoke at first though 😱
Think its engine out and casing apart 😢
Lol iam from hull ,can spot ull accent a mile away .just got gt 250 1975 ,having starting problems ,and kick start stopped returning on its own for f sake .😢
LOL at least you did not need a translator, some commented they could not understand one of my videos because of my accent. 🤣 A little while back I replaced the kick start spring on a DT 400, not a massively technical job, did have to swear at it quite a bit though as the 400 kick start also has a ratchet pawl that has to be phased correctly. Let me know how you get on 🤫
Hi are u from hull
Yes Peter what gave it away I wonder? 🤣
Hard to understand with accent!
Could be your English isn't quite good enough.
Thanks for the advice!
Thank you, hope things go well
Haha
Hi, two things I am not understanding here: 1, was wondering why you didn't zeroed all the gauges first before starting?(I used #1 nozzle to even out all four gauges first) 2, don't we start syncing from the master carb?(my XJR 1300 RP02 has #3 carb as master. So #3 to #4 and/or #3 to #2,#1) Otherwise it make no sense to me somehow!
Hi, thanks for your comments. 1. Not sure what you mean by this? 3. No actual datum carb, so using either 1 & 2 then 3 & 4 is appropriate. Also, as we always state if you don't like the way we do something or if you believe you have a better way, do it your way. Cheers
@@paulbell9025 ya okay, if you don't even know what I'm talking about, it's better to leave it right there. Cheers
Macdonalds wooden coffee ☕️ stirring sticks are the best.
Paul are you a tall fellow? The bike looks small compared to you
Lol, About six feet'ish
Just got a 76 dt 250 mx, finally found out from your vid how to measure float height, cheers Paul
Great, thanks for commenting. If you haven't already could you please subscribe. Let me know how you get on with your bike.
How do you adjust them do you lift the tank and remove vacuum pipes from inlets the ones that go to tank and run it on prime ?
Okay, can sometimes get away with the fuel left in the bowls, if not I use an auxiliary fuel supply direct into the carbs.
Gday Paul, getting a new clutch spring for the xjr has helped greatly with the slipping clutch. Flossc
Great, like I mentioned in the video the after market spring made the lever action slightly heavier (probably) but not a real world issue.
Hey so I been having some issues with my bike cleaned the carb 3 time my grandpa took it apart and when I got back it would turn over just ideal at max rpm
Hi Levi, check to see if the slide is somehow stuck open. If so check the throttle cable into the carb. These carbs can be a bear to work on.
Thanks so much, I had to tighten the screws on the speedo of my DT 250 and was in a misery as how to do this task. Following this video and and anther one made me brave. After a few hours of breaking sweat it came apart the screws got tighten with thread lock the lens was cleaned and placed back. However that was not the end the Rev counter lens was now looking out of place, so that had be done and off course did take longer . so Thanks again
Great, glad it came good in the end. If not already done so, will you hit the subscription button please. Paul
Great vid only had my xjr for a wee while so keep up with the vids Do you have a vid about shim changes Ron
Hi Ron, thank you for your comments. Sorry no video on valve clearances, I have done the valve clearances on the xjr at 26000 miles, really did not need doing and was quite simple. Cheers Paul
You didn't remove and clean the emulsion tube
No need to on this occasion, after ultrasonic cleaning and several blasts through with cleaner and air it was as clean as a whistle. As you can see in subsequent videos the engine ran like a champ. Cheers Paul
I changed the seal kit, filled the reservoir, loosened the bleed nipple and pumped, but not much happened. The bike has been stood for a while, and during that time all of the fluid has leaked out so there must be pretty much nothing but air in there I presume. Do you think that's the reason nowts happening by pumping the lever? I'm thinking I might need to get a vacuum bleed kit to suck some through from the bottom?
I think so, can be so full of air it seems to take forever. Could also try taping the clutch lever back to the handlebars, top up reservoir and leave overnight, then try bleeding. I often do this with brakes even when bled, belt and braces really but often results in a better feel at the lever.
@@paulbell9025 Will do, cheers.
Great series. Keeps things simple and informative for 'basic skills' people like me! Do you have the name of that one way valve and tube thing that you used to bleed the system?
Part of the basic skills club myself 😁 I believe it's commonly called a one way bleed valve, try this link www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314406414023?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=huig-eworyi&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=gND1X8w5S8-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Safe miles

does the push rod need to be greased?
Hi, I always take the opportunity to clean off, polish and lightly grease the pushrod. Not sure it's essential but certainly can't hurt Cheers
Dumb question, but what fluid do you use to fill back up? brake fluid? dot3?
Hi Brian, well not so dumb maybe, been a while since I made that video so relying on memory. Almost certainly I would have used DOT 4 as I do on other bikes. Cheers Paul
Hello Paul, Just bought a 1999 Yamaha xjr1300 which as mikuni flat slide carburettors to it. Engine starts and runs fine. Except having no throttle position sensor on these carburettors the bike tachometer showing 0 rpm to 3000rpm and repeats this over and over. However bike runs well. Is it possible to bypass the CDI to trick CDI ?? Any help you offer would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Keith, way out of my area of knowledge mate, perhaps one of the XJR on line groups could help.

Hi, I am the owner of this bike presently, I have owned it for a a couple of years and bought it off the guy who you sold it to, sadly it was left outside by him so many bits had gone rusty on it and the fuel tank was filled whith rust, did you by any chance have the cases apart at any point? I have the engine apart right now and have since I bought the bike as the gearbox went caput on the first test ride 😂, I have bought a second engine to sort out and use as a spare while I get this one finished, love the long travel suspension on it as it really lifts it up higher👍 sadly all the paint on the cases has flaked off so I have stripped them back to bare metal and will be rebuilding the engine throughout this week 👍 thought you would like a update 👍
Hi, the update is much appreciated. Can't recall splitting the motor, might have slipped a LH crank seal in (could be imagining it as well, did a few single cylinder two strokes around that time) Shame it has been allowed to deteriorate, it was never a show winner, but was this basis of a good rolling restoration. The rear shocks are slightly over standard length, and the fork were at the 'highest' settings, I think there are three options. Did ride it a couple of times and for a small bike it had a bit of giddy-up. Hope things go well with your resto.
@@paulbell9025 reso is going well right now, just ordering the last bearing needed to put the engine back together and need to fix some holes in the fuel tank, all the rusty bits have been stripped back and painted but the patina painted parts I have kept original. Hopefully it should be riding in a week or so l, if not the spare engine I have orderd will be stripped and made to work then it will run on that while I get this engine back together 👍. Did you put a new piston into this engine and do you know if it was oversized or not?
@@zakidickinson7376 did put a std new piston and rings, bore was fine and compression was within the stated range.
@@paulbell9025 ahh thanks wonderd cus it looked pretty new when I was taking it apart, there was a weird thing whith the main cases that someone had used actual clear bath silicone as the sealant and a lot of the insides were pretty gunky 😂

Why don't you show the work you do, installing the carbs, taking off the airbox....etc?
Hi, well the carb installation as you probably are aware is super simple really and regarding the airbox fortunately I did not have to remove it, there was sufficient movement back and forth in situ. TBH I was quite surprised how easily things went back together

Morning Paul, I’m currently restoring a 1974 F7 C and could do with some advice on the carburetor. What’s the best way to contact you with a couple of photos please? Cheers.
Hi, will certainly try to help, though I have to say I am not a professional, simply a well meaning amateur really. Been a while since I did this video, I think I may still have the Clymer workshop manual. email me at paul.abelmc@gmail.com. Where you based by the way?
@@paulbell9025 Paul, Thanks for the quick reply to my message on UA-cam. I tried to email you but for some reason I couldn’t get it to you. I'm near Walsall in the midlands and am restoring a 1974 F7 C, I'm at the point where I need to check all the settings after the rebuild. I've got a clymer manual but I don't find it very useful as it covers numerous models, and very rarely mine. I have a type one single float carb which is barely mentioned in the clymer manual, and am just a bit confused between the idle speed stop screw and the pilot air (idle mixture) screw. I'm guessing that the speed stop screw sets the tickover revs and the mixture screw controls the petrol/ air mix. The clymer manual refers to 1 1/2 turns out for the stop screw but doesn't mention the mixture screw. Any help you can give would be great. Cheers, J
I owned one of these for a number of years in the mid 90's. Boy how I could have used these videos back then. The biggest issue I had with the bike was with the centrifugal timing advancement system. I finally polished the while assembly with 2000 grit sandpaper and oil. The first time I took it out for a ride after that, I almost killed myself! In all the years I had owned the bike, the timing had never advanced!
Hi Steve, thanks for your comments in particular about the timing advancement, " all knowledge is power " 😁
