ROCKY'S ITALY: Rome - Michelangelo's "Moses"
Carved in 1513 for the never completed tomb of Pope Julius II, Michelangelo’s “Moses” is one of the artist’s most sensational sculptures. The marble statue is characterized by Michelangelo’s typical dramatic musculature and torsion. But the most famous detail of the sculpture is the horns protruding from Moses’ head!

ROCKY'S ITALY: Tuscany - Volterra
Переглядів 9 тис.14 днів тому
The beautiful walled mountain-top town of Volterra is in the province of Pisa and has been inhabited since at least the 8th century BCE. Remnants of an Etruscan gate and acropolis, an ancient Roman theater and amphitheater, a medieval cathedral and town hall, and a Renaissance fortress built by the city’s Medici conquerors are but some of the sites that are evidence of the city’s long history. ...

San Pietro in Vincoli is the reason I love Roma. We stayed in Monti, just around the corner, and one day on my morning walk I wandered into that church, not even realizing there was a Michelangelo sculpture there. When I visited, there may have been two or three other people in the church. I've gone back since then with my wife, again stayed in Monti, and again went to visit Moses. You never know what you're going to run into in Roma.

I have to make a few comments. Caracci's style is Roman Mannerism, very much under the influence of (the by then dead) Michelangelo. Rocky correctly says that Caravaggio INTRODUCED Tenebrism to Rome, while there is a common misapprehension that Caravaggio invented it. He didn't. There are excellent tenebrist paintings that were made 120 years before Caravaggio was born, and he learned it from his teacher in Milan. What Caravaggio did use, uniquely for Rome, was the Northern use of mirror projections to get his realism.

The correct title of the Caponi alterpiece is The Deposition of Christ. Also in this church is the great Slaughter of the Maccabees by Antonio Ciseri. Your videos are excellent, by the way! Thanks!!!!

The reason why Dante is not buried in Firenze is that he somehow offended the powers that be in Firenze and the banished him forever from the city. A century or so they realized the folly of their ways and petitioned Ravenna which gave him sanctuary to transfer the body to Firenze. They refused. On several occasions raiding parties were dispatched from Firenze but they had no success. The Franciscans in Ravenna resorted to various tricks to keep Dante’s remains hidden. In WWII the Franciscans in Ravenna also had to hide the remains from the Germans. His remains now rest in peace besides the church where they had been hidden in a beautiful mausoleum.
