    Please note : Server PSUs idle at higher wattage than ATX PSUs even if they are more efficient at higher loads. My PWS-1K66P-1R 1600W psu idles at 0.25Amps. And my Antec 1000W HCG idles at 0.09Amps.

    • @HomeSysAdmin
      @HomeSysAdmin 13 днів тому

      Do you think that is mostly attributed to the PSU fan being small and high-rpm? Or are there other factors at play?

    • @prashanthb6521
      @prashanthb6521 12 днів тому

      @@HomeSysAdmin I think the fans are a small factor in all of this. The smps circuit design is the main culprit. I have run the sysbench mutex benchmark using different PSUs but keeping the rest of the machine same. The final power consumption varies wildly. The best was FSP250-60GHT and the worst was Antec 1000W HCG which is actually gold efficiency certified. So the size of the PSU and the circuit design are the final deciders. Large PSUs running at 20~30% load are inefficient. The benchmark was about power consumption at the wall socket when at idle and at full load.

  • @csdstudio78
    @csdstudio78 14 днів тому

    These server chassis are so silly. All that airflow and then the output at the back is 95% blocked. No wonder the fans need so much static pressure and rpm. and 40c is way too hot for HHDs running 24/7. That's 104F!

    • @HomeSysAdmin
      @HomeSysAdmin 14 днів тому

      The backplane is really what does the blocking. They need to find a way to put more holes in it. And no, 40C is a perfectly healthy temperature. My target maximum is 45C, but I see other people running at 50C all day long for years without issue.

  • @dennisestenson7820
    @dennisestenson7820 14 днів тому

    6:30 power supplies are usually most efficient around 50% load, so using a power supply with double the wattage as what you need is often best.

    • @HomeSysAdmin
      @HomeSysAdmin 14 днів тому

      Agreed! The tricky part to factor in with so many drives though is the current required during startup. Even with staggered spin-up like these do, there's still an increase.

    As an admin who managed, many systems with these shelves. I can recommend labelling the front of the caddies with the drive serial number (or wwn) to make it easier to find dead disks!

    • @HomeSysAdmin
      @HomeSysAdmin 14 днів тому

      That's a great idea. I tried to do this originally but because these are white-label "oos" recertified (or whatever you call them) drives, the serial numbers returned by SMART don't match what is printed on the drive. I'm not running any sort of raid. They're individually mounted so I can easily identify which one is failed when one goes offline. For example 0315 is shelf 3, bay 15 :)

    Awesome video, great in detail about the 847 case and thanks for the fan info, as this was something i gave up on way back. Stacked 4 of these in my basement rack and together they sound like a jet engine idling. When it comes to PSU, there is a reason for the 1K41 as this with 45 drives will use <75% of the actual capacity of the PSU, meaning more efficient and longer lasting PSU. Heat will always be an issue, but even worse if using SED drives that constantly monitor them selves (have some i got cheap). Tried to block the holes on the side of the 847 case, to force the fans to pull cold air through the front drives/backplane, but i could hear the fans were struggling with my "great" invention. Looking forward for more informative videos.

    Yeah man those things are loud as balls. I have a Nimble Storage ES1, basically rebadged Supermicro 16-bay, which is a smaller version, and I swapped the PSUs with the Supermicro PWS-920P-SQ . They are platinum, $30 apiece when I bought them, and much quieter than the ones that came with mine, which I believe is the same as that bronze PSU you're running. If you're looking into Supermicro PSUs, be aware that they have at least two different connectors. At first I bought the PWS-1K28P-SQ, and the connector did not fit at all. I'm not sure how many different types they have, but those are the only two I tried. At any rate, congrats on the score! They are very nice enclosures minus the noise.

      Ooo those have the CB3 controller board. I was eyeing those up but the board alone costs more than I paid for an entire case! Do those boards control the fan speed based on temp or is it a single preset speed like the CB2/SAS2 versions?

      @@HomeSysAdmin It does indeed which is perfect for me as my rack sits in a mechanical room where throughout the year I have wild temperature swings due to our HVAC, water heater and server equipment. I paid $750 per with rails and caddies almost three years ago. All in all, even at todays prices I feel like I got a good deal especially considering I sold my old JBOD's (SM 16 bay units) at a time when Supermicro gear was harder to find due to Chia, so prices were obviously up.

      The space were the remaining 3 drives would go is where the two PSU bays and SAS connectors are. It's physically impossible to fit 3 more externally-facing drives in a 4U formfactor like this unless you put them inside the case.

    Just landed on this page, enjoyed the video, although CSE847 (jbod 45) would be a better choice as this has 7 fans and 2x 1400w PSU. Anyway, your heating issue on the 16 drives is due to your placement, your blocking the airflow, turn the disks by 90 degrees and you will have a better airflow.

      Uh, coming soon... check back in a week. LOL. And yes, I realize sideways was not optimal for airflow but it's the only way they fit with the backplanes.

    I am still using the 1U Supermicro pfSense build you first made a video about. It works great.

      Awesome! I was having trouble keeping mine cool even after installing a rear case fan. Curious what kind of temperatures you're seeing with yours?

      @HomeSysAdmin I'll let you know when I get home. So far, it has lasted one year; I built and configured it in 2023.

      @homesysadmin So far, it is at 57°C with the house at 72°F during the day. Due to these cold outdoor temperatures in the summer, when the house is much colder, it floats around 47-50°C.

    Great video I also try to avoid copper when it comes to 10g networking due to heat I have a few RJ45 based 10g nics I don't even use them because of the temps. I'm currently moving all of my services from ESXI over to Proxmox so I'm definitely in the market for a 10g switch.

      I started down the 10G route with copper then quickly learned 1) the heat issue 2) the cost. It just doesn't make sense to me. Maybe for specific applications, such as those requiring PoE (APs) sure...

    hey bro,use pfsense Means your data will trans to your home server first?

    • @HomeSysAdmin
      @HomeSysAdmin Місяць тому

      Correct, the data is encrypted between your device and your pfsense router. Your traffic will appear to come from your home network with the VPN regardless of where you are in the world.
