Hi there lovely people! Derby & Power is a channel dedicated to documenting life as a creative small business owner. I have been running my millinery label, Derby & Power, since 2016, and over the next 12 months I'll be experimenting with some new branches to add to my little business.
I'll be sharing some tutorials and 'how to' videos with you, as well as a little bit of small business chat, and I'll also take you along for the ride as I trial and test new techniques and continue to expand my range.
Thank so much for joining me! Em x

How to Make a Tiled Floor Mirror - DIY Tile Trend!
I have been on the lookout for a full length mirror for my room for ages, but they are sooo expensive! Over the Christmas break I decided to try making one, and it was actually really easy and fun. It was my first attempt at tiling, and my first attempt at DIY furniture (pretty sure I'm hooked now!), and I was really happy with the results :)
I'll outline the steps and supplies below for you, and feel free to post any other questions in the comments! Em x
STEPS:
1. Lay out all components to determine placement.
2. Secure mirrors to MDF using liquid nails - apply two thin lines of liquid nails about 5cm away from edges, and press down to secure.
3. Apply painters tape to your mirror for protection, and paint any sections of the MDF you think may be visible on the finished project.
4. Secure tiles using tile adhesive. Follow instructions on adhesive packaging. Spread a thin layer of adhesive over your surface, create ridges flowing in one direction, then place your tiles down and push in the opposite direction. Leave to dry for 24 hours.
Note - you may need tile spacers at this stage. I haven't used any because my tiles are on a netting which keeps them spaced.
5. Using either pre-mixed grout, or grout mixed as per package instructions, add acrylic paint in the colour of your choice. Try to keep the paint to grout ratio no more than 1:5 to maintain the composition of the grout. In my experience, the grout dried lighter as opposed to darker.
6. Wipe down a section of your tiles with a damp sponge - this will make it easier to clean. Use a grout spreader (or alternative - I used a silicone spatula!) to apply your grout over the damp section. Be sure to fill all gaps between tiles. Use a damp sponge to clean off your tiles as much as possible. Leave to dry for 24 hours.
7. Pull off your painters tape and clean up as required - you're all done!

Hi there! My name is Emily, and I have been running my millinery label, Derby & Power, for about four years now. I've decided to start this channel as I begin to branch out a little, and add a few more creative 'bows' to my small business 'arrow' ;) I'll be sharing headpiece tutorials, as well as documenting a little trial and error as I add some new creative product categories to by business. ...
All 3 are beautiful!
Where did you get the ball ends for your craft tool
What type of leather do you use?
Beautiful thank you
Hi Emily will you have the kits available on your site soon? Thanks x
OR you could use a thin veg tanned leather, which is basically "unfinished" leather that will take paint and finishers but which also be stiff by default and you can then just make it wet, carve a texture on it and shape (again simply wetting it first) and then once it's dry it retains any shape and texture but back to being stiff! You then paint it with acrilic paint and you don't need heat or a soldering iron. It's also way safer and child friendly because again, you don't need heat and you can use regular tap water to make it moldable, but also it may happen that someone uses pleader for this which is a HORRIBLE idea, as pleader is just plastic and you could create fumes, melt it around your iron creating a big hot mess or even worst starting a fire. Even when not using pleader, using chrome tan (the finished type used for upholstery and clothing) is less ideal because you never know what waxes or finishers you got in your leather, so you still at risk of fumes or fires. I recommend everyone wanting to try this to look up veg-tan (vegetable tanned) leather, usually you can get pieces called "bellies" that are wonderful for crafting for very affordable prices (less than 20 bucks for a big piece)
I have a nice pair of leather sandles with flowers on them. Over the years the flowers have curled up. Can I take my iron to them?
I would imagine you can - just begin on a low heat setting and slowly work your way up! x
So beautiful 💖
So Gorgeous ❤
Can you use Mod Podge instead of PVA glue?
Really beautiful
Interesting. Thanks Derby.
Superbe merci ❤❤❤
It’s beautiful!!
Great job. Love it. Can I use any fabric/ribbon?
Felicitaciones,hace un trabajo hermoso,gracias bendiciones.
Is very beautiful
What is PVA glue? Oh and what kind of leather are you using? How thick is it?
Hi there :) PVA is a type of craft glue that dries clear. I'll link the one I use below so that you can look into it further. As for leather, I generally use sheep leather. The thinner the leather, the higher the concentrate of PVA you will need to use when stiffening. Hope this helps! x www.spotlightstores.com/art-craft/basic-craft-supplies/craft-glues-adhesives/craft-glue/pva-glue/crafters-choice-pva-glue/80421212?gclsrc=aw.ds&gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpeaYBhDXARIsAEzItbHkKaH5K1obRxfYHhOPM4QiHECBH4LZJRmLgVfjVbNSgwP8RFf6D68aAqfpEALw_wcB
Amazing what was the glue thank you so much ❤️🌹
Or fort liquid
Hi :) I used a 50/50 mix of PVA glue and water to stiffen the reverse side of the leather, and then I used a craft fabric glue to assemble the flowers x
Ok ijust received my inks totally only giving this sgo for tge Frist time so hsd no idea about the blending solution 🙈🙈 do tell more please 🙏
Really enjoyed the tutorial. Where do you purchase the soldering iron attachments please ?
Hi Elizabeth - I bought mine off Ebay, they are also available from House of Adorn here: www.houseofadorn.com/flower-making-tool-sets
They are beautiful. Please what kind of leather do you use?
Thank you! I usually use sheep, but any leather so long as it's not too think it should work well :)
Full crome or full vegetable or crome free ????
Hi Emily, will you be doing a video to show us how to attach flowers on the headband. I am really enjoying your videos.
Hi Judith - yes I will! I have a simple one here already: ua-cam.com/video/txRg1W8oWRI/v-deo.html And I will be showing you some alternative techniques (for more depth / height) once I move into my new studio space :)
Emily. … you are so talented. Love the mirror
Thank you so much - it was actually really fun to make! x
So unique … looking forward to seeing more tutorials ..
They are gorgeous …
Thank you for sharing … I really enjoyed your tutorial
Awesome 👏 🤩😃👏
Very beautiful ❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍
Good afternoon. How did you wet the fabric?
Hi there! I brush the reverse side of the leather with a mix of equal parts PVA glue and water - this stiffens it so that it holds its shape when I use the hot soldering iron to shape it :)
Your video is really great! Keep going! Good luck! 💜💜
Thank you so much!! Glad you enjoyed it x
From Indonesia, hai emily
Hi Choirur - hope you liked the video!
It turned out beautiful, you're so talented! I just started using alcohol inks recently and this really inspired me and helped me with the technique. Thanks for the video 🥰
Amazing - so glad it helped! They're so fun to play with aren't they? So many different techniques to try... Have fun! x
ua-cam.com/video/cvFhSmxFs7A/v-deo.html Pearl crown
Hi there! Thank you so much for the tutorial. I absolutely love it! I have two questions, for the gold fabric, is it like a gold tulle fabric? And for the Gold embellishments, are they real gold or just plated? I live in Canada and I've been trying to find something to find something similar.
So glad you enjoyed the tutorial! The fabric is a stretch polyester netting. Here's the link to the one I buy in Australia if you want to take a closer look: www.spotlightstores.com/sold-by-the-metre/sparkle-net/BP80257533-gold The embellishments are all plated - I find that as the headpieces aren't worn against the skin as jewellery is, gold plated is all you need. Just yell out if I can help with anything further! x
Hi Emily🙋🏼♀️ what type of gold fabric that you use on your videos?
I use a stretch polyester netting :) Not sure if you're based in Australia, but here's the link to the one I buy: www.spotlightstores.com/sold-by-the-metre/sparkle-net/BP80257533-gold
@@derbypowerbyemilywinter5095 Noo😔 i’m based in Istanbul but, you influenced me a lot thank you for that❤️
Please make more tutorials of your beautiful headbands♡
Of course - more coming soon! x
Thanks for your tutorial 😍😍It really helped me 💫
You're most welcome - glad I could help!
Thanks, that was a lovely tutorial 😘
So glad you liked it! Feel free to request any other designs ;)
