Приєднався 16 жов 2012
We are Arlin and Lois. We live in South central Pennsylvania. We live on a dairy farm and milk around 290 cows. We raise all our heifers. Our 3 children, Willie, Lori and Alex all help on the farm. They all have their own places but still come home to the farm.
We also have some goats, mini horses, dogs and cats on the farm.
Come along with us and see what farm life is all about. It's not for everyone but we sure enjoy it.

What Happened To His Fingers? - Milking Cows and Making Hay
Great video do you have any trouble with that cow getting mastitis in the quarter with the damaged tit when I had my dairy had a cow with same injury 👍
No, if you trim them short enough, they usually are ok.
Do you have to pay for the whey they bring you?
No we don't
So did that calf bring you north of $500 ?
Yes
At Mt Hope he would have brought over 800
@@susanbrobst3186 Crazy prices someone going to be a big loser when the bubble burst .
What do you do with the goats? Meat?
We sell all of our young Billy's that are born, either privately or at a local auction. The young nannies we usually keep at least half of them each year and the rest of them we sell as well.
Great young workers
Great looking cattle
Any farmer would proud to have your cattle great job 😊
Truth
Thanks Arlin and lois
Great video, beautiful beautiful farm 🚜, keep those videos coming enjoy everyone milking , cleaning, feeding i enjoy them all
Always enjoy your videos, thank you 😊
Sorry for the lost cow.😔
I just started watching your videos and they are excellent, I have no idea how you have time to get all your work done plus take videos. What is the dairy farming like in your region, as in is there lots of dairy farms left, can you find processing are paid a fair price? I love milking cows, I help a friend out in his double 3 Surge Auto Flow parlor and I put up some stanchions and milk a few of my own. I sell raw milk in ND as last year a bill passes that allows the legal sale of raw milk in the state. I tried to start up a 60 cow herd but every co-op and processing plant said no. The dairy industry in North Dakota is non existent unfortunately, down to 22 farms. At one time there was over 3,100 family farms. Very said what’s happened in the Midwest and the country in general with the loss of dairy farms. The Dakotas, Minnesota and Wisconsin have been hit hard, lots of empty parlors and Harvestor silos sitting idle all over the place. At one time it was the most common way to make a living and it made sense, gave the kids something to do and taught good values as well as steady income. My buddy says it’s about $4 hwt for trucking and they are getting paid $19 hwt. That’s just not enough to cash flow a dairy operation. Anyhow enough rambling, great job and beautiful farm and herd.
Thanks for your reply. Yes, there are a lot of dairy farms around us. Pennsylvania is 6th in the US for milk production and is 2nd for the actual number of dairy farms. I think the last I looked there are a little over 6,000 dairy farms in the state of PA. The county we live in is the 2nd largest county in the state.
Very impressed with your treatment protocol for the prolapsed utereus cow. You might try using a hip clamp to get her up sooner. Hip clamps are hard on hips but we have also saved many cows to get them up soon as possible. Your right, can't save them all even with the best efforts. Thank you for posting , always look forward to your videos. We always repeat your famous words " you just get one problem fixed and another one pops up" Thats dairy farming
Love the lineback cows❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
When you work with living material, someday you will lose one!! Good luck and honest video
If you had it do over would you have called in your Vet? Seems like a good cow would be worth the expense. Life long dairyman.
I'm not sure. I have worked with enough of cows like her over the years, that I don't think there is much more the vet would have done. When they get a pinched nerve, it is usually a wait and see game. Most of them will eventually come around in a couple days. When we have a prolapsed uterus like see had, there not much more to do then put them on antibiotics and try to keep them comfortable.
Happy new year that fresh milk that’s got blood we would call it strawberry milk 👍👍😀
She had a hard time...
Sorry for the loss of the cow. You really care for your animals. That is a huge calf. Your dad's saying is so true. Blessings on your New year ahead.
Such little beauties….. Really nice calves..
wow thats crazy the corn grew that quick after a shot of rain in the heat, never seen anyone do that side by side comparison on one spot
Worse than pulling inflations LOL those milk bars look like a great way to grow calves!
We really like the milk bar feeders. We have been using them for 5 or 6 years now.
If you google Gloucester cattle breed you can sort of see the similarities with your calf. Great video again. Love the light show! Happy New Year and wishing you and family a prosperous and safe 2025!
You guys are really cranking those cows through in 3 hours pretty impressive. Most of them must let there milk down fast in like 6 minutes. Do you run the fresh cows with the main herd in the free stall barn then after you move them from the maternity pen?
Yes we run the fresh cows with the main herd. We are talking about starting a fresh cow group, but haven't done it yet. We start on one side and go back and forth, from side to side. So while the first line is milking we are prepping and attaching the milkers on the second line. Each line is in there about 10-12 minutes, but by going from side to side like that we are averaging a line approximately every 6 minutes.
@@arlofarms Yea a fresh cow group would help to keep a closer eye on them and sick/lame cow as well. You guys do an amazing job a lot of passion behind your work.
@@Justangs Thanks.
😅😅😅
A milk cow will do the crazy’s things
For the new born calves do you leave them with there mother to nurse for a few days or do you milk the cow and bottle feed the new born ones? I noticed they'll be a couple days old and you leave them in the calving pen.,
@@Justangs We usually let them with there mom about 24 hours.
Your free stall barn and bed packs are extremely clean. It really shows that you go to great lengths to keep them that way. It's nice to see the calves wearing their blankets. Thanks for the tour of the farm and all the information. Not much you didn't cover. Thank you, Farmer!
Thanks, we try to take care of everything the best we can.
Very good videos. I hope u enjoyed ur visit to Wisconsin when u bought ur bull a while back
Thanks! We actually met at a cow sale in Ohio. So we didn't have to go the whole way to Wis.
Merry Christmas
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too.
That's what I have for water. Energy free Richie. If it gets much below 0 the balls will freeze. Push lose with your hands. Last year was a little colder for 4 days and it froze the line. -30 at night. We normally have 2-3 ft. of frost. NeKs I like that calf shed. Thanks for the videos.
We have at least 8 of these all together. 2 of them are outside at the end on the dry cow barn. On really cold night we started to pile sawdust all around them. That seems to help a lot, but we still have the balls freeze tight once in a while.
@arlofarms it's the water that runs down their mouth. that gets the balls l It takes a good flow to keep it from getting inside.
Very nice video, thank you
Thanks for the content. God Bless and keep on keeping on.
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you and your family
Merry Christmas Arlo farms and thank you for what you do. Thank you for the reminder of why we celebrate! It is the birth of our Savior
Merry Christmas to all our farmers.❤
Merry Christmas
Nice operation, Sir.
What moisture you put the earlage in the harvestore? Usually comes out pretty good then?
We like it at 38-40%. This year it is a little wetter. We very rarely have any trouble with the unloader.
@ Merry Christmas. 🎄Been watching the channel recently, love the content. From Ohio here we used to use a 20x90 harvestore for earlage around 40% moisture. Would have tough times to get it out when it was nice feed put in a little wetter. Same as haylage when too wet. But now we went to covered piles and earlage in a ag bag. Never could figure out what was needed to be addressed to get the feed out better out of those silos. They still stand today about 35 year old structures. Nice when they worked! But the roofs needed replaced with holes in them.
Merry Christmas! Just had Christmas lunch so feeling a little sleepy. Thank you for your time and effort into filming and editing videos. We really enjoy them! God bless.
Merry Christmas to you I got rid of my dairy 16 years ago have not missed it lots and lots of never ending work now just have beef cow herd 👍
So 299 animals. How big is that parlor and how long to milk from fire up the wash to the end wash ?
Our parlor is a double 11. We usually are milking between 295 and 300. From the time we walk in the barn till we walk out, is between 2 3/4 to 3 hours.
@ thank you have a merry Christmas !
Merry Christmas to You and Yours.
Thanks !
Great video. Thanks.
It would be interesting for explain some of feeding the cows with your silo's. I have only bunckersilo. Good video. Merry christmas
Great vid. Memories flooding back , we had , empty since 2011 a 110/25 silo Dad pulled those ugly things a lot Silage pit eliminated them here Dad actually died working on it , digger chain climbed up , no matter what we did , cut a hole in the side to try and bring her down Stress , and probably lack of sleep and brute strength , he milked his cows , at 3:00am and came for breakfast around 7 , had a Power Nap and never woke up again. I was 21 , still milking cows , 200 or so April /8/2011 We emptied that silo and been empty since. Roof was a mess. The click click click advance sound the arm makes.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. Glad to hear you were able to keep the farm going. I lost my dad to cancer in 1986. I was 14.
Nice kendal does good work
Thanks for all the videos. We wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Happy Birthday Louis, Merry Christmas to you all and Happy New Year.
I always wondered how a bottom unloader worked. I worked on a couple farms that had top unloaders so I knew how they were. Back in the day when I was milking I had a round barn that had an 8 by 45 wooden silo in the middle. I hand pitched that one.
