Upon following the current (at the time this video was made; January 31, 2025) #CurtManufacturing installation instructions for this #56370 #trailerwiringharness on this vehicle (#2025 #HondaCRV), some technicians may be frustrated to find that the powered trailer circuit is cold and not working when trying to test the finished installation for operation. Curt provides a 15 amp ATM low profile fuse in the wiring kit, but makes no mention of it in the installation instructions. Seasoned installers may expect to find a slot in the power distribution box under the hood to cause the trailer wiring plug to become hot. However, the fuse position for that feature is in the fuse compartment located under the dash in front of the driver seat. The Honda owner’s manual listed “YOP Trailer” fuse position #17, which is difficult to figure out because there are no markings on the outer casing of the fuse box and also NO diagram in the owner’s manual. Through the process of elimination, we discovered that fuse #17 is positioned in the 3rd column from the left/outer side of the vehicle and the 2nd fuse from the driver’s seat in that 3rd column. Once we inserted the 15 amp fuse provided by Curt, the circuit at the back of the car became hot and everything functioned properly. We are hoping that Curt will update their installation sheet and pictures to reflect these findings.

    For one it's not the original installer who chooses the wiring. UHAUL offers a list of options and recommends the easiest option. T connectors , plug n play, as well as the universal you displayed in the video. Many customers choose the cheaper of the options which most usually is the universal. As for the wiring resting on the exhaust there is no excuse for that. That's just sloppy work.

    My 2022 3500 SRW LB has two camera receptacles where the 4 pin connector used to be. If you pull a trailer that utilizes the four pin, I guess you need an adapter to seven pin or an extension cord to go over the tailgate. But keep in mind these are some of the same bunch that can't figure out the multi-tailgate issues with the trailer hitch. After 3 or 4 years, I would think they could fix the problem, but seems like they are creating new problems.

    This Ranger doesn't have the blunt cut wires for the TBC because it doesn't have the tow package. You can tell by the fact there's no 7-pin connector at the back. It's kind of weird, but the tow package doesn't include the TBC, you have to get it separately (part number VKB3Z2C006A)

    • @akshonclip
      @akshonclip Рік тому

      That Ford TBC includes a separate module that allows connection to the CHMSL. Its plug and play but a lot of work to install as you have to run the wires all the way up to the 3rd brake lamp.

    • @pablogarin
      @pablogarin Рік тому

      @@akshonclip I know, I did that on my Ranger... it's actually easier than you think. The point of my comment is that the Ranger on the video doesn't have the tow package, and in those Rangers that do have it, Ford left the wires ready to plug the TBC... if you want to you can install just the TBC, and not the auxiliary module, but then you would have to disable the automatic emergency braking (pre-collision assist). The connection to the CHMSL is only a workaround for the AEB

    I just bought a 2021 Ford Ranger XL STX with no tow package. I will be installing a Tow Pro Elite Break Controller that I have acquired through a Ford Dealership. As you point out, there is no wiring or plug under the dash to install a break controller. I was able to mostly follow your video, but I didn't quite catch where you should hardwire the blue trailer brake wire from the controller. It sounds like you are advising that the blue trailer brake wire coming from the controller should be hardwired into the break light wire found at the back of the truck. FYI, the kit from the Ford Dealership (VKB3Z2C006A) does have a Lumen Trailer Lamp ECU that is connected to the CHMSL on the back of the truck cab. If you could confirm, that would be awesome! Thank you!

    • @ConnectedCorrectly
      @ConnectedCorrectly 2 роки тому

      The CHMSL circuit (with the associated ECU) will be what “tells” the brake controller that you are pressing the brake pedal and that it needs to send power to the trailer brakes. The blue wire FROM the brake controller will be ran/hardwired from the controller in the cab to the electric brake circuit post in the wiring plug at the back of the truck. It should be a “straight run” and not connected to anything else.

    Numerous reasons such as a sled deck mentioned by others but can be utilized as an emergency plug just incase the 7 blade stops working. But also keep in mind, to make a different hole requires a different cut out die which in case costs more money and such dies, stamps and molds are very expensive to make so one cut out die to make two holes the same is cheaper than two different dies for two different holes and keep in mind those dies do wear out and have to be replaced. To be honest, I'm surprised they are even including a hole at all on trucks without the 5th wheel/gooseneck prep package.

    Totally agree this is stupid for a design. The only reason i could see for wanting a 4/7 way is that some old gooseneck dont have breaks and could possibly use a 4 way. That chance is probably less than 2%. So it is a stupid design. The only good thing is that both those plug are interchangeable on the truck. But once that 4/7 way goes in its going to be a bitch to get it out without access to the clips.

    I wouldn't like that hitch placement with the short bed. I just finished installing a B&W on a 2021 long bed and it sucked. They redesigned their hitch I'm guessing to deal with the attachment holes on top of the truck frame now. In the old days when you bolted the B&W brackets to the sides of the frame and simply slid the cross members in through the wheel well and bolted it all together it was a breeze. Now you have to bolt the end fittings to the shortened cross members. Most of it has to be installed in place up under the truck with little to no room to spare. Then most of the bolts have to be tightened in place, several to 150# which is nearly impossible. Then the 8 bolts that go down into the top of the frame have to be tightened to 110# and you can't get a socket on them. That's a lot to ask of an 18mm box end. The whole install is just a disaster now compared to how it used to be.

If you are, and the actual plastic connectors are a different style and do not mate up, then you would have to cut the connectors off of the ends of your plugs and wire those up one wire at a time by function. Another option would be to see if you could get the lighting harnesses off of a different truck (salvage) and cut those back about 7 inches from the connector and wire up the properly mating connectors that will match onto your wiring harness.

    There's nothing "going on" with GM. They know a few things about building trucks, and their engineers have spec'd the new trucks with the hitch set back because so many people want to pull a 5er with a short bed. And while these are already the longest short bed on the market @ 6'10", it helps even more to set the hitch back. They designed it this way, so clearly they're comfortable with the weight not centered exactly over the axle. I think their feeling is that as long as it's centered in terms of suspension travel, it's ok. And as Randy graham pointed out, it's centered on the leaf springs.

    • @ConnectedCorrectly
      @ConnectedCorrectly 3 роки тому

      Believe us when we tell you, the engineers at the OEMs aren’t thinking about stuff like that when they design their trucks. They WANT to think about the implications of changes they make, but they never seem to ask for outside help with those decisions. They do what they want and then expect the aftermarkets to jump through hoops and change around their design. They didn’t put that bed hat channel right over the axle to keep aftermarket manufacturers from designing hitches further back from the cab. They put it there because that just happens to be the strongest spacing of the bed supports. Most 5th wheel manufacturers know that more and more people are towing 5ers with short bed trucks. As a result, they are designing the nose cones of the newer 5th wheels to be more aerodynamic and rounded off at the corners. These types of nose cones are more short bed friendly than their boxy ancestors. For proper weight distribution in OTA (Over The Axle) towing, we really need to keep the center of the kingpin or gooseneck ball immediately over or just forward of the rear axle centerline.

      Hi Ken. If you have a model that has ANY trailer wiring, then yours is better equipped than the one in this video. We ARE aware of the fuse provisions for the trailer wiring in the power distribution box under the hood. On the truck in this video, those fuse positions were there, but the wiring was not. In other words, those fuse bays were not “active.” As far as a factory trailer sway feature (not sure what that is comprised of), Ford probably puts that on all these trucks as “standard” equipment because if they provide ANY way to pull a trailer (even if that’s a hole in the bumper for a ball), then they probably want that feature to work. I’m not entirely sure how the manufacturers are accomplishing trailer sway control on their trucks. It would almost have to be something that utilizes the ABS system to apply short alternating brake pulses to the rear wheels of the vehicle... 🤔 From an aftermarket perspective, trailer sway has always been best controlled with a mechanical sway control device mounted between the vehicle/trailer.

    I'm glad you use the brake light wire and suggest the chmsl wire, since going by the brake pedal signal not only has the issues you outlined, but also isn't activated by the AEB (automatic emergency breaking) or ACC (adaptive cruise control) systems. If the truck were to automatically apply brakes in an emergency situation without also applying trailer brakes, then you're gonna have a bad time. And insurance may not cover you either.

      Absolutely! That has become quite a conversation topic between OEMs and aftermarket equipment providers. SOME OEMs are taking those situations into consideration and others are not. In the meantime, until we have a comprehensive list backed with field research, it’s best NOT to use the CHMSL circuit for brake controller input; especially on late year model vehicles.

    I'm sure you know by now if the tow package is there it has wires... you were close wrapped in blue tape & main loom

      James Rolzitto: Yes. We knew that. The point of this video is that there are some Rangers that do not have wires AT ALL. We have since seen more Rangers that were equipped similarly to this one that HAD the wires. This one did not. In these apparent rare cases, the vehicle will have to be “hardwired.”
