    I’m no expert Howard, but I would weld two bar supports on the inside of the door (one lower and one higher) and then cut the old bar out after. I agree, patch weld the upper door jamb. The pan is a tough one but I think you’re on the right track! Good luck!

    H your solution regards front bracing is good and the A pillar repair is the way to go just replace rotten sections , in my opinion. The other strengthening you discuss just use your engineering skills and FSE ingenuity I am sure you will get it right. No matter what you do there will be distortion but suitably braced it should be minimal and easily fixed with a porta power and heat.

    • @Wheels_of_Interest.

      Thanks Martin, yes I think I don't want to make more work than is needed on the A pillar, it looms sound at the top. As long as the doors shut and it drives straight I thank that's a result!

  • @conradparker6355
    @conradparker6355 8 днів тому

    I did a similar repair to the common rot points on my Landy bulkhead near the vents as you suggested for your A pillar. I see no problem in doing that and will be a lot easier than trying to replace the entire A pillar. Good luck with the floor pan though as that is would be out my depth not to say I wouldn't have a go though.

      Hi Chris, yes, as I was editing the video and talking, I realised that I should weld in new bracing before cutting out the old - senior moment there I think! The A pillar is in good condition on the inside except at the bottom and that small patch just below the top hinge mount, even where it meets the scuttle it's clean. I've seen some completely rotted out under the scuttle.

    Very good!! You've got a good base there! Definitely saveable! Full floor is the right thing to do, heritage and M machine parts are very good. M machine are pretty local to me so they helped me alot! Please don't be scared of magnum panels, they are cheaper than heritage and have some parts that heritage don't make or don't make in repair sections. They use to be cheap and nasty but they've really upped their game and are good quality for restorations alongside heritage. Ensure every new panel fits the absolute best it can before welding, even heritage panels need adjustment, cutting and reshaping from time to time and bare in mind that the shell may not be 100% square from factory so adjusting panels is common practice because that's how they were fitted in the first place! Love your enthusiasm, if I can help in anyway please do get in touch, even for parts i can help. We're a good community us mini lot so we can crowd source bits behind the scenes if needs be!! If you can make it I really really recommend coming to the British Mini Fair on the 26th of January. Its is an amazing show and has a MASSIVE indoor jumble sale. I'll be there too!!! Great project, great channel, I feel we have a lot in common so I look forward to our paths crossing in the future! Ed

      Hi Ed, thanks for your comments, lots to think about. When we tried fitting the half floor we were constantly trying to make it fit all round and it did my head in.........! My main concern with the full floor is adding enough bracing to stop the shell twisting too much, especially with gravity involved when on the rotisserie...... We went to the Mini fair two years ago, was a great day out, hadn't planned on it this year but will look at the diary and will keep in touch, thanks again!

    Why does it have a butterfly? Usually on a diesel you don't need a butterfly valve except to produce vacuum for an EGR system, and this is too old to have EGR.

    • @Wheels_of_Interest.
      @Wheels_of_Interest. Місяць тому

      Hi and that 's a good question - well spotted! The throttle system is a vacuum operated type. When the butterfly is opened it creates a vacuum in a pipe that is connected between the intake manifold and fuel injection pump which acts on a diaphragm on the end of the injection pump which in turns operates the fueling rack in the pump. More air = more vacuum = more fuel 👍 Thanks for watching, I hope that you are enjoying the channel.

    Great machine you've got there, couple of things, is the accelerator cable routing correct as it looks like a very tight bend where the cable goes into the manifold bracket which could be wearing the cable and you mentioned how small the seating position was in the cab, would there be any advantage to raising the drivers seat up so the driving position is more upright relative to the controls (maybe some bolt in spacers under the seat?).

    Can you not just replace the rusted metal pipes and leave the plastic ones. Are they not plastic to reduce the need to replace them ?

      @@MrBalbeggie Hi, the plastic pipe is heat shrunk on to the steel pipe which has a ridged end. The plastic will be destroyed if one was to try and remove it, I tried but couldn't do it, it's single use unfortunately. The only other thing is to maybe cut out the corroded steel and join it with flexi pipe but you have to be sure it seals and the MOT tester might question it, I wouldn't want to do that. Thanks for watching the video and your question 👍

      @ thanks for the explanation. I did hear you say they are heat shrunk on. How easy is it to drop the tank if you have to replace the plastic pipes?

      @MrBalbeggie ok, well, the tank could be a fight. All the bolts on mine sheared off! I was lucky enough to have the luxury of the floor cut out and could get to them from above, heated up the broken studs and screwed them out with a pair of grips (replaced with stainless). However, if coming from underneath I think there's enough flex on the pipes to lower the tank to get to the plastic coupling joints on the top into the pump unit. There is a knack to getting those off, so try and give yourself enough room to see them if you can. When the tank is off there is quite a lot of space to see the condition of the floor x member etc. Good luck Sir🤞

      @@life_on_cars Paul, what's your process for laying up your XK?

      @Wheels_of_Interest. very similar prep as you suggested, then mine will go in the garage. I need to get some of those plastic dust sheets that bodyshops use - I do own one cover which is over the MR2 now stored in my Mum's garage !
