BMW E34 5-Series Fuel Tank Straps - 525i / 535i / 540i / M5
Переглядів 533Рік тому
A short video that shows how the fuel tank in the E34 5-series is strapped to the car. With the cars getting older, these straps are often rusting out and causing gas tanks to fall, so it is good to inspect them and to be prepared to replace them. The strap design should be the same for all E34 5-series models which include the 525i, 535i, 530i, 540i and M5.

    Thanks Trevors38 I have the same issue and this will be a huge help. You say removing the door handle is easy. My other research is giving it PITA rating and talk of specialist BMW tools. Could you share how you removed it please?

    • @TrevorS38
      @TrevorS38 Місяць тому

      Sorry for the late reply. I typically work on the older cars but the method for removing the Z4 exterior handle is roughly the same. There is a plug on the rear side of the door that you need to remove that will give you access to the brass slider that hold the exterior handle to the door. This brass slider (IIRC) needs to be pushed forward towards the front of the car and you will be able to slide the exterior door handle out. It is actually very simple once you see how it works. This is a video from my older 5 series but the system is essentially the same. Start watching at about the 3:20 mark and you should get a rough idea of what you need to do. ua-cam.com/video/z7th4RUol74/v-deo.html Getting the door panel off and messing with the locking mechanisms inside the door, and swapping out the bowden cable can be a real pain. The exterior door handle is not.

    Salvage yards are getting more and more out of hand as the years go buy. Here in California we have "pick and pulls". They're outrageous when it comes to pricing. Almost not worth going anymore.

    • @TrevorS38
      @TrevorS38 7 місяців тому

      Yeah I was out in California for a few years. I think Sun Valley is the largest hub of scrap yards in the world. But yeah, prices are getting nuts. The bigger yards like Pick N Pull that have standardized prices aren’t worth going to nearly as much as they used to be. I pulled outer headlight, inner headlight and an amp from this car and laughed when they read out the prices at the counter. Left them there and walked out.

      @@TrevorS38 I've been in the same situation before. I spent almost 45min pulling out an aftermarket trans cooler for one of my jeeps. Got up to the counter and they said $45. My jaw just dropped. For a fucking piece of aluminum! When I told them never mind I don't want it. They told me to just put it in the scrap pile. They would rather get 20 cents for it then charge a decent price and make people want to come back. I've had it with them. I'm not proud of it, but if it fits in my tool bag, I'm not paying for it. They can kiss my ass.

    I feel the new ICE car price will only go up for the rest of time, and EV will take over the market share. It's really cool if we can put all these old cars together and use up all their lives. I think it's still less risky to buy cheap cars to fix. I sold a few project cars in the past few years, some bought pre-COVID, one from a friend's throw away car recently. They can be sold as long as it works. All made 1~3k from each one of them, mostly labor cost. This way you will never lose money.

  • @bluegables
    @bluegables 10 місяців тому

    Not sure if it's easy to sell like this. As the used car price is so high right now, it's hard to flip cars too. I am also willing to fix car to sell, but it's hard to find cheap cars to make decent profits.

  • @bluegables
    @bluegables 10 місяців тому

    This is a good idea! When new car price is so high and EV is coming, most of current ICE car owners will just keep fixing current cars. And this is environment friendly work.
