Comics are hard to make.
You will hit a brick wall. You will doubt yourself. You will take breaks.
This is 100% normal. The negativity, frustration and anxiety are part of the process. Instead of seeing them as things stopping you, they are telling you that you are improving.
I create videos to give you the tools to carry on, especially when you feel like giving up. This happens most often when we're deep into a project and comics is my speciality. I literally have a degree in it.
And although my niche is comics, the advice is universal for the majority of creatives and I cover things like:
1. Creating a sustainable schedule to fit around your life
2. How to ignore the voices of doubt that can cripple progress
3. How to set your comic up for success by planning properly
4. Strategies to help you improve faster and fall back in love with creating
I've come close to quitting many times over and the strategies that I talk about are the ones I have used personally.

A lot of artists say "just draw" because you arent asking anything specific. If its generally just asking how do I draw, of course you're just gonna get the answer to just pick up a pen
yeah, I agree on drawing daily won't make you better artist. For past 2 years I worked on my lines by drawing straight lines and circle. My line got better on drawing straight lines and circles but when I draw anatomy or gesture, 2 years of straight line went into gutter. Turns out all I need was to draw what I want to achieve from the beginning to end.
The WORST advice I’ve heard for comic artists in 2024 00:00 Введение и мифы о рисовании • Рисование определенного количества часов в день не является полезным советом.
i think that when it comes to the thing about perfectionism, it is of course true that if you're just a perfectionist 24/7, you won't get very far. I had a lot of that issue. Aiming for something that is completely out of my reach. I do think that you should try to do every panel to the best of your ability though. not rushing things, or saying "eh nobody will notice that. If you can see a mistake, and you know how to fix it, fix it. try your absolute hardest even if it takes double the time, because the only way to improve is trying your hardest
People who ignore thumbnails in favor of exclusively focusing on inking are how you get comics with very pretty illustrations that do an absolutely awful job of telling a story. I see so many comics where the pages are great pinups but the flow of action from panel to panel makes zero sense. Thumbnails are how you set up the composition for your comic, and one of the things I put the most focus in because you should ideally be able to follow the action with no dialog. RE drawing feet: I'm awful at drawing human feet, lucky for me the two main characters in my comic have digitigrade legs and paws/clawed lizard feet. I'm still not great at those and definitely need to practice them more, though. But I can draw boots better than Leifeld at least (lowest bar possible I know)
I think Where Manga has this culture of reducing your art style to a more simplified version that looks almost the same for every manga, there are exceptions but when you think of amazing Manga art like Miura from Berserk or Araki from Jojo, the thing you'll notice is their art stands out because they don't have the constraint of having to do manga weekly, and the artist who are on demon time usually end up in pretty bad health because of it. ON the other hand, American comics outside of Marvel and DC have always had weird artstyles and you can instantly go, "Oh this is a Joe Mad piece" etc. There are comics like Department of Truth or Hellboy that prove that you don't need super realism or the same boxy-shadow illustrations that comics are known for. just do art and create a story it's that simple.
Another great video. Most of the worst advice I received was already stated in this video, but some of the best advice is to start making comics regardless of your skill level. It's easy to get into the trap of feeling like you aren't good enough to start, but it's not true. There are ppl making comics at all levels of art, and a good story is still a good story.
22:33 In some ways, I feel like zinemaking actually addresses most of the myths. I've hit on them recently as a tool for ideation. There's no particular reason to even publish a zine if it's for an audience of one, and that's how I've been using them; I have some scrap paper, so I make a booklet out of it, give it a title and go about filling it up from there. That means I get to ignore what every entertainment industry prefers doing - maximalist productions that need layers of capital investment - in favor of rapidly satisfying creative goals and creating something that is any amount of finished, so that it doesn't linger around in my brain any more than necessary. If you practice at that part of it, of course you can return and add polish and production on top of that later and do things in a way that aims to engage with industry. Returning to an old, roughly-made work like that is a good sign, it means the audience of one wants more.
Somebody told me I shouldn't bother studying Todd McFarlane because his anatomy is so exaggerated. One of the biggest icons in all of comic books and revolutionized the medium, yeah definitely nothing to learn from him.
I'm surprised more artists didn't copy McFarlane in the 90s...there were a ton of artists copying jim lee and Rob liefeld..
@@tonyfrickey9062fr
Todd McFarlane? What's he ever done in comics? /s
Study Todd's storytelling and composition. Very foundational stuff he is applying.
@@rockon8174 Todd's page layouts and composition were on point back in the day.
So much of what you say here echoes what I've seen from authors writing about writing. I suspect that all creative endeavours share a lot more than is immediately apparent. (I also laughed at the 'economist' advice!) Another corker of a video, John! X
I love these videos! still haven't started my comic hahah
2025 is a great time to start!
I still haven't finished chapter 1😂😂
these are good myths to tackle i swear i see the same comments from reddit and it's pretty obvious who are the ones with real experience with the craft. the part about deadlines is super important. whether it's for a job or for your own story you need to stick to a deadline. although with the latter you can be lenient with yourself. I've been through the "no deadlines I'll finish when i do" route and it's not a fun experience. felt like im sisyphus and the rock tumbling down is me getting burnout even moreso because i didn't have an ending in mind for the story ugh 3/10 no mas. deadlines help in making the process realistic.
There's definitely a sweet spot between setting a deadline and making that deadline reasonable, for sure.
I saw an awful list of 'advice' on Pinterest yesterday, that included 'avoid copying your favourite artists' and 'you have to force yourself use different mediums if you want to improve.' 🙃
It's hard to understand the logic behind that "advice"
It's not awful advice
@@theanimelibarian7881yes it is. All artists are copiers.
@@theanimelibarian7881using a different medium could help you improve but it’s not the only way
I would argue that forcing yourself to use different mediums can be a good tip, it's just not a "you absolutely have to do this to improve" type. I speak from experience that there's a lot of overlap between techniques in different mediums and I've actually learned most of my digital painting skills from traditionally painting lol. It can really give you a new perspective on how to approach different artworks. The other tip is just stupid though.
This vid is a great confidence booster for me. My fear is inking. I like to my panels with pencil and marker pens (scanning the final page in and colouring digitally), it’s a process I like so the next step is to actually use an ink brush to ‘ink’ the panels. I could do this digitally but it feels like cheating I guess…I can ‘undo’ as many times as I like. It’s a physical skill I want to get better at, I’ve seen UA-cam vids, read books on the subject so I have a basic understanding of ‘how to’ it’s that initial ‘first mark’ with the brush that scares me. After seeing this vid I guess it’s just a case of ‘do it.’ Time to enter the forest 🙂
You've got this Andy
Very well thought through and very true. I think it is also easy to forget the small progress we make every day. I made a very important decision for my story today, which came just in time to be incorporated into the current chapter's layout. It helped me setup my dialog for the page and it brought another surprising change with it. So in the end, one small observation and a seemingly small bit of progress can cause us to understand a much bigger piece of the work. As long as we progress, we learn something. And then we have to practice and repeat it in order not to forget again.
I fell into a romance with zine-making today after thinking "I could make some of those 8-page mini booklets out of this scrap paper I have", and I think those minicomic formats are a great format to use to prototype comic ideas without pressuring yourself with a big blank page and a script and illustration. I do a lot of diary comics. Comics are words and pictures and panels. There are conventions about relatively how much of each of those to have, but they're just that - conventions. The drawing can be important, but the drawing done *for* a comic depends on accumulated knowledge about the world that you're trying to draw. Some of that knowledge is in your head and hands, some of it is in character design sheets and references. Some of it is built by trying to tell the story twice. Some of it is built by doing a careful study of someone else. It's just very hard to tell what's the blocker at the beginning, so breaking down the task of "comics" any way you can into bite-sized pieces makes a big difference.
Incredibly helpful. I needed to hear this. Thank you!
My problem is more that I can’t progress the story of my comic because it doesn’t feel good enough. So I’ve put out a comic with a good beginning and a cliffhanger, but now I don’t draw anymore because my story isn’t done. Huh 🤔 Also I always thought I am bad with colours but software with integrated colour schemes help a lot to get started.
Where do u post your comics? I'm struggling to put my art out there especially on the wrong platform. It feels like throwing your baby into a well right now to post anywhere.
I'd strongly recommend learning marketing to help get more eyeballs on your comic. That coupled with patience will serve you well. My current comic is unfinished so I'm posting it on Patreon for now, but I've posted on Tapas, WebToon and GlobalComix
I thought I'd try doing the sequel book in my series in color, thinking to myself that I was already doing a lot of work on the manga-esque grayscale shading the majority of the first book is in so how much more work could color be? The answer is "a lot". It's taken me 4 times as long to do the first 6 pages of Book 2 as it took me to do the last 20 pages of Book 1. Suffice to say the prologue (pages 1-6) are all I'll be doing in color (aside from the odd single page for emphasis throughout the rest of the story, like Book 1 had). But I definitely don't feel I ruined the book, and it was a valuable learning experience. Working digitally allows for a lot of freedom to experiment. I ended up redrawing about 5 of the first 20 pages of my graphic novel completely, because I'd gotten so much better at page layout and composition by the time I got to the last page (202) and lord some of those early pages were unsalvageable. The Infinite Revision Loop is a tempting trap to fall into, but I have at least 3 sequels to finish, so onward and upwards. I could literally spend the rest of my life just tweaking and redrawing the first book in the series but then no one would ever see the sequels I have in my brain.
Sounds like you've got a really good balance going on in your workflow. Love that!
Thanks for the advice for this! I am starting my first manga some time later, rn planning my script. Idc whether it is terrible or not, I just want it released. I chose a manga becaz there isn't any colours involved and things could be done quicker. Hope you the best in creating your own comics too, I'll find some time to read them if I can.
The problem is... as an overthinker, thinking before drawing leads to not drawing at all because I keep changing or upgrade the story, etc..
As always. Great advice!
7:42 i do this self-evaluation too except instead of panel i use page because I'm unlearning an old habit of over detailing a panel when the reader just takes less than a second to look at it. and since it's a comic, i find page cohesion is more important (panel flow, beats, page turner all in all), also it calms my anxiety (insecurity) if i can look at one page i did and be kinda proud of it, that if someone can find something good at it then it's worth it.
I bought and dowloaded the ultimate comic planner, but ai can’t edit the entries, help?
Shoot me an email at comiccreationstudio@gmail.com
is there a story in this comic? i didn't quite understand what was going on
I storyboarded my first comic, and now I'll be working on it!
Thank you so much, the message is beautiful and your videos help me get back into comics after a decade or more of abandonment of the art! I surely am thinking that I am not good enough and can only fail but I’ll try rewriting that feeling with the ignorance of a child who draws for fun and trying to draw what comes from my heart and being proud of it, despite it being very far from my self set expectations.
I have more trouble with drawing backgrounds, do you have any tips for me?
Learning to 3D model (very basics) can help with this significantly.
ua-cam.com/video/7u58dVzwxG0/v-deo.html
I have started working on my comic knowing it wont look what I deem perfect, but as I progress it will show how I have improved.
Don't worry about someone being better. There will always be someone better than you-smarter, better looking, better drawing, better rendering. It's not an obstacle. In the world of manga or comics, look at One (One Punch Man) or Hajime Isayama (Attack on Titan). Poor drawing skills wasn't an obstacle to being a top mangaka. Yes, they improved over time, but they're still mediocre compared with the drawing skills of an average mangaka. Their skills were storytelling and ideas.
Two really good examples there
Ur a good content creator idk why ur getting low veiws and likes *Can you give me some tips about imaging what I want to draw* *Like if I wanna draw a person I just draw limb by limb that that not really the best way I don't know how to draw poses*
One of my favourite things to see in comics or animations especially, is when you can see the improvement of the artist's skills within the story, and if you flip between the first and last page, you can clearly see the improvement between. I find that it just adds so much more personality and story to the piece, and it's just so nice to see!
I agree!
JJBA and Attack on Titan are my favorite example of this
It's so hard not to build pressure on oneself- but done is better than not at all! it's definitely something I have to remember, Love the vid! Thanks for sharing~
i promise to do my best with this, i was talking down my art a lot at a con recently, but when you see how amazing others art is its hard not to say hey im a newbie here
Duuude , this video is very helpful, thank you for your wisdom
Mark Kermode's review of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' is a classic rant, and very funny! It didn't stop me enoying it! (I didn't realise you saw it in the cinema 8 times! I think Dad and I only saw it 6 times!) This is another really good video, as usual with lots of good advice for any artform, not just comics.
Thanks for another great video!! Lots of great advice. One thing that helps me deal with intrusive negative thoughts is to think of all the writers I’ve known with completely unearned confidence. If they can believe in themselves that much, so can I. XD
3 minutes in, and I'm crying lol 😅 I really needed this, John. Thank you! I've always been self-conscious about my work, so much so that I keep procrastinating. I kept telling myself since last night that today is the day! That I just need to get on with it, stop worrying so much... and just draw! And this is the first video I see today, so I really appreciate it. I nedded the confidence boost. Thanks!
"Nobody deliberately goes and reads bad comic after bad comic" Uh....per chance, have you heard of Webtoon and Tapas? O_O
Oof. Shots fired.
@@BrinkleyComics XD
true. i mean would you buy from a baker who, before you can even see their bread, would preface their own product as "bad" or "not that good" or worse. let the readers find out on their own, you'll be surprised what they interpret from your work that you didn't even intend in the first place. be your own #1 fan!
Exactly.
'Nothing is better than negativity', are you positive?
Yea I'm proton
6:53 ROFL Thanks for the tips John. I’m getting closer to start with my first page (been doing a lot of scripting, character design and art practice for the past months). Watching your videos helps me get in the right state of mind 🙌🏻
That's great to hear man!
Hi, I love your videos. Have you made a video about creating characters and character sheets and keeping characters consistent throughout your comic? Would love to see that. Thanks! :D
Hi! I haven't unfortunately. BaM studios have done some really good videos on character design that I recommend.
I need to work on this. When I did my revision pass of the first graphic novel, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that, despite being my own worst critic, I found myself going "damn, I'm a better writer than I thought" and looking at some of the pages and being genuinely impressed that *I* had drawn that. Despite all that, I'm not Geoff Darrow or Yusuke Murata so I tend to downplay the quality, and looking back, I most definitely shouldn't. It's my comic, about characters I love writing about and drawing and am super passionate about, and Book 1 IS pretty damn good if I do say so myself and Book 2 is going to be even better.
This was lovely to read :)
Do you have a discord?
I certainly do! discord.gg/nvftZWSv
Is it good to start by making a 4 panel manga or yonkoma?

im writing a comic with my friend and this helped a lot !! tyy
7:34 I actually get my best ideas when I'm in the bathroom taking a bath or doing my business there. One time I was there I had so many ideas that I literally ran back to my room and spent the whole day just writing about my characters and key moments. It was amazing. Another way is just simply talking about your idea with someone else and then you'd get an idea you didn't think of before. Having other people with you does help with the writing process. My only problem is I can talk and think faster than I can write and my hands can't handle it and I end up resting and not being able to finish my idea or what we were just talking about.
