Plant Gay For Life Studio: NYC Plant Tour
🌱 I had the best time visiting Jake @plantgayforlife studio in Harlem.
Jake is one of my very first customers since the store opened, and we hit it off right away! I went to his performance and also got to know his parents too 😊 You can check out his music at @JakeInzerra
I love his positive & vibrant energy. His studio apartment hosts over 150 plants, yet he keeps everything so organized and aesthetic! I felt so inspired after visiting his place, and I hope you feel the same too.
Did you enjoy the video? Should we do more house visits? Let me know in the comments below!

Watering tips & tricks from a plant store owner
Woo-hoo Jake!! Love the tour, thanks for sharing!! 😊
Hello, how do you sanitize the plant?🌱
Hi, could you give me more context? Is this for when you bring the plant home or when you have root rot?
@@PlantCornerNYC After you nip the little sprigs off you said you sanitize those with what? Someone said peroxide but what else and how much per water??
I love your grow space. Nice and neat and not junky. Gorgeous 🪴Very nice designed and organized. 👍🏾Video. I’m June and my place is called Junegle.🪴
That is so cute!
You can make suggestions without being a**holes about it, no one is forcing you to watch this video, or anyone else’s for that matter. Just make the suggestion, no need to be nasty about it, with all the dramatics, most of us are not as tech savvy as we think we are, trial and error. Thank you for taking the time to upload and share, and being kind to those were unnecessarily rude.
Thank you so much for saying this! I appreciated it 💌
@@PlantCornerNYC You’re very welcome.
Yasss Jake ! Love this ❤
Coming to you next!
Hi Jake, your plants studio is very nice indeed! 🎉🎉🎉 @Jira … I love your out door story very much! Cheers ❤❤❤
Thank you Jake for having us again at your place.
Could you guys make a video on self pollination? That would be amazing!
Jake can probably tell you more on this @plantgayforlife - I don’t have the patience 😂
Yay house tour. So exciting when worlds collide. I also watch his videos. 😊
Thank you so much for watching! Yes he’s great!
This was great - more visits for sure! ❤
More to come!
What is root rot and how do you remedy that? Do you have a video on that topic?
Hi! We have a video on how to prevent root rot! 7 ways to prevent root rot ua-cam.com/video/MDwh6SEW-oc/v-deo.html
Very helpful! Where do you get the clear plastic pots? My garden centers never have them.
Thank you for watching! I got them on Amazon 🥰
I repotted my giant pothos and now all the leaves are limp, falling off and are yellow 😭 will it get better?
Hi, I would probably take it out and check the roots because the symptom sounds like root rot!
Woooo! Always excited for a new video. Love the new filming location. 😊
Thank you! 😄
Great tips for beginners! Actually, when you had the moisture meter up on the screen speaking about it a thought came to my mind. You could use it two-fold......one to check moisture in different places in the pot and two...it would also aerate the soil as well.
YES! That’s exactly how we’ve been using ours! Thank you for watching!
Nice sharing
Thank you so much for watching!
always looking forward for your expertise. thanks.
Glad to hear this! Thank you 💕
Plant with better soil ,surely a cheaper option?
Just finished another great video and I’m so grateful for the guidance you provide; love it!
You are so welcome!
Take my money!!!!
Calathea need Well draining Potting mix, Which include cocopeat or pea moss, Perlite or pumice, need bright light but not direct sunlight it can burn their leaves, Watering also should be checked no Overwatering and also no Underwatering between these two is ok, for fertilizing u can use vermicompost or other water based or chemical types.and check with pest include mealy bug, spider mites etc tht destroy the plant, for treating pest u can use soap water or neem based pest control liquids. And also calathea like humidity and moisture, well ventilation etc, climate etc
Couldn’t say it better! Thank you for sharing!
@@PlantCornerNYC welcome
Root rot is NOT caused by having a pot that is too big. It's cause by not having your soil mixture correct and the roots not getting enough oxygen. All in door plants need a well draining soil and to be in a pot with many holes in the bottom and sides of the pot SO water can't stand at the roots. Only 30% of my mixture is actual soil. The rest is orchid bark cut into different size pieces, charcoal, perlite, and in some cases Leca or Lechuza Pon. When my soil dries out I fully water the entire pot through, let it drain out, and then also bottom water in the clay saucer for about 20 minutes and then drain out the saucer. IF you don't fully water the pot until it drains through atleast every other month salt build up from your fertilizer is going to damage your roots. Plants rely on water more the fertilizer as fertilizer doesn't make your plants thrive is the nutrients in the fertilizer that enables better uptake of water so that the entire plant from root, stem, all the way up to the leaves receive excellent transport of water...
This was a super video for people that like the looks of calathea but are scared to get one because they don't think they'll crack the code. Believe it or not, my first calathea was the rattlesnake and yes.....rank me as a mass murderer beside you. I feel it was too close to the east window --- 1 ft. away indirect bright light and it needed to be further back. The leaves just turned brown and shriveled up after I had her for a month and then she went to plant heaven. I haven't ventured out to get another calathea since. They are beautiful plants!
I feel you! 🤣 killed so many and I don’t have them at home now because I tend to neglect my plants! We live and learn!
Good morning friend... Thanks for you share
Always a pleasure!
I appreciate this video, but your background music is too loud and is drowning you out. The information you are presenting should be the main focus. Thanks!
Very well explained so interesting and intelligent this topic you choose to cover is so good. You did a great job teaching me and others plant care it's very positive thank you so much.
Yes
I keep mine under a grow light. Some calathea like it, and some don't like being under the light. I'm so confused
🤣 I know right? So hard to please!
I can't watch with the loud music. Bye.
Thank you for this video! I learned so much in so little time.
So glad to hear this ☺️🥰
Last summer I got my first Hoya from a family member. It had no pests. However when I started buying more Hoya from box stores and several pothos I noticed they had flatmites. I bought a cheap wifi microscope and can’t see them but they damage new leaves and growth and you can actually see the chomp look on the leaves. I had to start treating them with a liquid sulfur spray and found I need to do that weekly and remove damaged leaves immediately. I try to keep my plants wo touching but some do now. Can you do a video on flatmites and show what the damage looks like and the various treatments? Thanks
Yasss those are such a pain because they’re invisible to the eyes 🥲 fortunately we haven’t gotten them in the store. I found this helpful blog that might help! anaturalcuriosity.org/flat-mites/
Great information, thank you.
My pleasure ☺️💕
hilariously, despite having alocasia n stromanthe in my apt, the spidermite magnet is my basil. i think they really like the thin leaves and i cant put pesticide on it since i use it to make pesto 😭 thank you for the info! very helpful
Woah! I would def try Arber then since they are safe for consumption!
Hello my friend...i like video
Thank you so much for watching!
Very informative and thank you for showing what those pests really look like. Beneficial insects are great but they can be very expensive as well long term. I just do the alcohol with the mealies and haven't had anything else in the last 40+ years of plant parenting.
You’re very very lucky! But come to think of it, when I just take care of my own plants, I never really had pest issue either 🤣 but once I opened the store / taking care of other people’s plants… I’ve seen everything
มี ปย. มาก & น่ากลัวจังเนอะ … เรื่องราวเยอะ น่าจะแบ่งเป็น 2 ตอนมั้ยคะ … 👍👍👍

Fantastic advice
Thank you Andy!
I had an angel wing begonia and it started dying the moment I brought it home. Then I gave it to my mom, and it flourished in her bathroom.
Some plants just don’t like us 🥲
I love this plant! I have one in my humidity cabinet. It gets bright light. It has doubled in size. It has actually outgrown the space. I don't know what I'm going to do with it now ☹️. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us 😀
Happy to hear this! I would cut and propagate the top part and keep the bottom part in your cabinet ^_^ now you have two plants!
@@PlantCornerNYC great idea 💡😁👍
i just discovered your channel this past week. Love it and what a sweet person you are.
🥹 so glad you found me! I appreciate your kind comment as well!
Thank you very much for the tips on repotting and watering. I always thought repotting into a larger pot would give the plants more space to grow. But unfortunately quite often the plant dies and on checking the roots I fond that the roots have not spread out and have remained confined to the original pot size and the roots have rotted. Also now I realized that I have been over watering because of the size of the pot. Your video has been very helpful and going forward I think I will not be killing any of my plants 😅
Very glad to hear this! I have made similar mistakes in the past as well 😆 we become better plant parents after each plants we killed 🪴
👏👏👏 clip สั้นประมาณนี้ ก็ดีนะ ไม่นานเกินไป get message 😍😍😍
ขอบคุณค้า
I love angel wing begonia. I have mine in pon in self watering, and luckily, she bloomed for me almost all winter. Thank you for the great tips. 😊
Oohhh you’re so lucky! Did you fertilize them?
Glad i watched this. Very helpful when i repotted my mothers plant. Unfortunately she overwatered it and your advice helped so much.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
Very helpful! For all three of the insecticides you mentioned, are they safe to use around the house?
Yes they are!
Very interesting and much appreciated. Thank you.❤
You’re very welcome!
Just happened to come across your video while looking for other plant related video's. Very informative. I have never (knock on wood) had the misfortune of pests other than fungus gnats. For fungus gnats, I use systemic houseplant insect control which works amazingly well. I do follow your suggestion as far as new plants are concerned. I check them out in the store to make sure there are no pests. I also check other plants in the general vicinity too. If a plant that is close has spider mites, mealy bugs or anything else, chances are, the plant you want to bring home does too. I usually don't buy the plant and go to a different store instead. I also quarantine all plants when I get home. They go into my bathroom for almost a month. I have over 100 plants in my collection and if I had an outbreak of anything, I would cry. I usually only ever use Neem Oil, water and dish soap to treat plants as a preventative, however, I may try the Arber product you recommend. I do bring a majority of my plants outside for the summer (gasp) and let them hang out on my deck under the gazebo. (Don't worry, I know that's a bad idea and I should have my head examined but my plants love it so I'm going to continue to give them what they want). I do have a question for you though. Where did you get the spray bottle you used for the neem oil and Arber? I really like it and want to grab one. Thank you for your very informative video. I'm going to check out more of your video's.
Wow, thank you so much for your kind comment and for sharing your experience with us! I also use systemic granules as well for my clients if they have severe infestation, but usually we don't have to get there. We are also very careful and ask our customers to not bring plants to our store because we had an outbreak once before and oh boy I wish it would never happen again. We got the spray bottle from Amazon. Just look up 'electronic plant mister' and you should see them!
@@PlantCornerNYC thank you so much. I look forward to more of your video's. Great content and very personable. I appreciate your time in answering my question.
