Seam sealing carpet with hot glue
Переглядів 257Місяць тому
Can you seal carpet seam with different thermal plastic “hot glue” glue sticks? Does one work better than the other? This video I use a standard adhesive stick used for sealing carpet seems and compare it to an extended open time glue sick used for gluing down tack strip and carpet repairs. - I am not recommending using anything other than sealer that is recommended by carpet manufacturer or ma...

Balls of steel - cutting radius in laminate floor
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 місяці тому
How many of you would cut a laminate floor after it’s installed? Client of mine purchased the floor from me and put it in themselves. They were unsure about making these cuts so I advise them to leave Floor long and I would have no problem making the cut after the fact. With the right tools and skill anything is possible.

Why are you feather finishing the whole floor? Why not just prime and latex screed the whole floor, it would a whole lot easier a day give you a much better finish? Please don't think I'm criticising, I'm just abit baffled, I'm in the uk perhaps we do things very differently
Floor was rough from the grinding off existing adhesive
Looks awesome when done this way as opposed to just a stright line, it's worth the lil extra effort, could you have just made relieaf cuts in the 1" incraments and keep the z bar as one piece?
Yes, and just leave the middle of the Z bar intact. I’ve done that as well. On the inside curves it overlaps a little bit and I don’t always like that so I do it this way.
Been using one for years, absolutely brilliant tool
I have total respect for every flooring contractor out there. I am 15 years retired from the Retail and Installation of flooring products. Many customers think we are "only floor covers". We are a very hardworking bunch that should be shown utmost respect for what we do.
I appreciate the kind words thank you
Feather finish, would be far quicker and easier 😂
It doesn’t seem to smooth out as nice over top of OSB, especially with chipped wood and screws. The grinder can get the floor flat and that’s what I want.
Absolutely the best carpet tool ive ever bought, im in the uk been using it for 12 years, i don't know anyone else who uses one , great tool
Can i ask Why you cover the stringers? in the un they only really get done on some commercial jobs but never domestic
Why did it need a join? There's no way that room is over 4m wide but even if it is Why not just go with a 5m wide , no need for the join?,,,
Is it unrealistic for me to expect my carpet pattern to run parallel with the wall?! It’s on an angle and it’s driving me nuts. Haven’t paid installer last payment yet.
Some patterns are more difficult than others, but you should be able to get one wall parallel with the pattern
@@steierflooring9869 thanks for the reply. it's a simple dot pattern, nothing elaborate.
Will the cool glide get hot enough to activate the stronger one that’s my question
Fookin hell ,just stick and nail them what a work up
Excellent job. That's a slick fix, man.
At the stone hearth saw cut - I've used Jambe saws & all types of diamond cutting. I have not had the scenario show in the video. It appears the bottom of the saw cut (not the top of the saw cut) is above the sub floor by 1/8" or more. The bottom of the LVP lays on the sub floor. I viewed the video multiple times, however I might have missed something. How did you get the LVP to lay flat (not on a slope) at the stone cut which is higher than the joining LVP?
The orocon seam sealer sticks are more flexible but in the summer they suck, the plastic on the bag gets stuck on the sticks and you can't get em out lol
I’ve got a couple bags of those right now that I’m using. Powerhold is usually what HankS sends me.
Yeah I use the powerhold too
I've been using the uv trace glue sticks for couple years now. It's game changer compared to the orcon liquid seam sealer.
getting the manufacture to actually pay for any defect is near impossible, might as well use what you like.
I dont like either one ! I use only orcon Fast Lock for all my seams !
Keep using it!!!
Perfect!🤘
Hey John!! Been going through a lot of videos lately and watching some of your content. And just wanted to say I live in Atlantic, Iowa and I appreciate the knowledge you are giving!!. One of my flooring mentors lives here in town as well. We were wondering if you have any insight on possible training classes or any One day seminars coming up in the near future here in iowa? Thanks man
Do you have Facebook? Check me out, John Steier. Also, I am hosting a class up here. February 22, 9 AM until noon. Free seminar over best practices for seaming Carpet. I wanna talk about different types of tapes, row, cutting, seam ceiling, doorway seems. Would love to have guys bring their tools as having hands-on training is so much better than listening to my ass. Talk for three hours.
Do you unstick the seaming tape from the carpet pad before stretching? I heard the seamer down now prevents this and have been really wanting to buy one. I work alone so I always have something to do while the seam cools down, but sometimes picking up a 50oz+ carpet on a 4ft+ fill piece to be able to get the pad to unstick can really mess you up. I have heard of using a seaming board to drag underneath the seam as you move but that wouldn’t work on doorways.
What’s the purpose of this video? If you don’t show how to roll it, cut it, install it, power stretch it. This is a complete waste of video on installation of a carpet.
What is the plywood for??
New product needs nice flat and smooth floor. Existing plywood was pretty rough
I am currently picking up all those pro tips of the trade. Been at it for 5 or 6 years. That's how long it takes to really get good at notching and taking excess from other parts. Too much complication to say in a comment. I'm lucky enough. The guy I'm learning from doesn't want to do carpet that much anymore so that's my time to shine lol
Good for you. Nationwide good carpet installers are rare to find
Hard job
It was
I work with 2 builders up here in MT that still do this on all their pre fab houses. I have them leave a 3/8 gap between the skirting and the stair treads and I’m able to just cut my piece and shimmy it in the gap. Haven’t seen a set like this in years, great crash course and reminder, thanks floorinator 👍
I like that idea of cutting your carpet and having a place to tuck it into
Good video.I have done lots of stringer wraps, I personally think that look on steps awesome.
If you do it correctly, I think it looks fantastic! A lot of of the stringers in my area are just too beat up to actually throw a coat of paint on them and have them look decent
The video never does justice good or bad. The fact you know about 6inch is awesome. I think it looks great man well done. Planning ahead for more difficult seams. Tight stretch good seams is about the most you can give laying carpet.
I’m gonna do some videos about this in my shop in more of a controlled area with better direct lighting right across the seam. Hopefully that will help others watching see more clearly. What seam peaking and profile is.
Perfect, nothing to worry about.
Never crown staple carpet only tack it’s the worst thing to deal with with tear out
Couple guys around here use crowns on their step installs
Why not cut to the original floor in strips? 2 ft 1ft strips.tri tack is great spread the word
To remove the existing underlayment that is what I did. I cut in 2’-3’ strips.
Those Floors were covered to avoid asbestos abatement.
You have to stop call luaun "subfloor.," it is confusing. That is DIY or homeowner terminology for it. We should call it what it is, Underlayment. Then when you say "Dont nail underlayment on top of underlayment" there will be no confusion.
I use my festool track saw for ripping underlayment, being that almost every cut is different from one end to another usually, track saw is God my friend
I do some hobby woodworking in the winter time and I’ve always wanted one to break three-quarter inch plywood sheets down
Dude its so good, shaving doors, cuts for flush cut nosing, making 2×4s or 6s perfectly straight, uneven stair risers, the list goes on
Wow That sculpture carpet is old !!!We did 1000's of yds of it in the 80's !!
The struggle is real, the hardest part of every job is the prep. And it don’t get easier as I get older.
It’s been a while since I’ve had to tear out this much underlayment! This was definitely one for the books.
I have Asbestos vinyl tile with mastic over concrete. Water heater leaked over the flooring. How can I check moisture to see if new LVT can be placed over the existing floor?
Is this your own house?
This deals with the easy case of moving furniture, where there's plenty of room nearby to move it temporarily. What about a house with an upper level consisting of four bedrooms, each packed with heavy and bulky beds, dressers, desks, file cabinets, etc.
In those situations, we pick one or two rooms to do at a time. It’s not ideal, but sometimes it’s the best to just clean out one room pack it all full in another room.
@@steierflooring9869 Thanks for prompt and helpful reply! That assumes, however, that there's room in any one bedroom for all the stuff in another bedroom. One of the rooms could fill two of the others (which are themselves packed). I guess you can see why we've still got the original carpet from 1985. It's depressing to think about the moving effort involved
One advantage to gripper or flatbar is it creates a mop buffer so the cpt doesn't get mop water against it over time. Z bar waaaay better than turn and tack on wood subfloor though.
Yeah I turn those down man, tell the customer it's a really bad idea, shits disgusting
Answer: You don't
What are the chances! I'm doing a bathroom hall and stairs for a customer today 😅 not my favorite thing to do but older customers seems to love it. I'll be sure to try this out today when I get to the washroom
It takes a little while longer but I pull the toilet to get it stretched in. And bonus, no seam behind toilet
Nice !! Iv'e never thought of that !! In the 70's everyone had carpet in bathrooms and kitchens but I haven't done a bath in yrs !! Who still has carpet in a nasty ass bath ??
Throw a patent on that idea
I use the Milwaukee Packout rolling toolbox but I like to organize it in a Mary Poppins fashion😅, taking every tool out of the box when all I need is a glue stick.
I think that is a good representation of most of us installers!
Like Redd Green said, “if they don’t find you handsome, they’ll a least find you handy.”
I love it
