Hi, my name is Alf and I'm a hobby composer, musician and certified Audio Engineer.
I grew up with Classic and Progressive Rock (Deep Purple, Rainbow, Genesis, ELP ...) but I listen to and play a wide variety of music from Blues, Folk, ballads, meditative music to classical music.
I play and record "Hammond" organ, piano and synthesizers (both hardware and software) and I also have basic guitar, bass, percussion and drums skills.

The sound of an Anton Walter Pianoforte replica (from the Nord Piano Library)
What did a pianoforte sound like in Mozart's time?
Here are two short excerpts from the Moonlight Sonata and Alla Turka, played with the sound of a faithful reproduction of a pianoforte by Anton Walter from Vienna, which Mozart and the early Beethoven had played.
These instruments sounded much thinner and were not as powerful and had less sustain than a modern grand piano.

Nord Stage 4: Comparison of internal Rotary Sim, Lester K and Ventilator 1

This is a non-scientific comparison of the internal Leslie simulation of the Nord Stage 4 with the Lester K and Ventilator 1. The organ settings are totally flat (no EQ, no reverb, no compression, no V/C), only percussion on/soft/fast/3rd. Later there is a bit drive involved (on the Stage Drive at 3.0). In direct comparison, it's amazing how different the three "Leslies" sound: - Nord internal:...

It's more the beating of the oscillators and gentle saturation from the moog that I can really hear that aren't that present in the Nord, and I could hear that on phone speakers! Still, an audience won't give a shit I'm sure
Yes, I agree with both of your statements. I sometimes simulate some "analogness" with digital synths by morphing the pitch (a few cents) with velocity. More elegant would be some "vintage" or "slope" function like in the Sequential synths.
Have it and love it, its a dream synth and no midi makes it great to bring the 70s vibe in the music where synthes where used as lie instruments. Moog is taking some bad desicions lately while the brand should stay in the monosynths legacy and great built quality, this synths weighs 18 kilos and is built to last 200 years, and the sound is much better and full even from modern Moggs.
Thanks for your insightful comment, very appreciated! I sold my Voyager OS several years ago - and of course regretted it from time to time. And since then, Moog didn't offer anything similar sounding. I will definitely try the Muse when I have the opportunity (as they say it has the oscillators of the Voyager). Perhaps it's the modern alternative. Moog should have published a new Voyager 2.0 - people would have loved (and bought) it!
Dont know what is going on with the Moog industry latetly Muse is a polyphonic analog with digital bits, they try to be modern in a way cause that sells - maybe more - but i think they would specialize in "old school" sound as much as they can cause on other type of synths there is a lot of competition, i was about to trade my OS which is mint btw with a subsequent 37 and a SCI Take 5 and many Moog addicts told me that this a no no trade at all, after i heard that old school my self again i decided that this sound CANT be reached even by any modern Moog with modern facilities ok you miss a lot of the old sounding Moog sound, also Bob Moog himself before the reissues of the D - that he never saw - considered the OS Voyager the closest to the original and i take in account and respect a lot the father of all these than the other "experts" that try to sell me that modern is better, no its not most of the times.
@@Pan6888 Good decision to keep the OS! I never liked the sound of the Moog Subs too, somehow thin and harsh, whereas the Voyager (like the Little Phatty) had this massiveness, fatness and warmth.
@@Spektralfarben-Music MOOG is MASSIVE sound and BUILT QUALITY if they loose one of them this would destroy this company i am afraid. When i first played the original Minimoog D ten years ago i thought that nothing is compared soundwise on this synth and i had quite alot all these 25 years.
Years ago I played some Mozart midi files using this nord sample As close as I’ll ever get to being in a room with Mozart 🙂
Bravo! 👏👏👏👍👍👍
Extra 👍🥂
Interesting point about the Chorus-y sound of the Lester K in slow, I always heard it that in the videos (never seen one in person), but never saw no one mention it. Does it bother you, making it less realistic? Does the fast speed sound bad in your opinion?
Thanks for your feedback. I’ve noticed that instantly especially when comparing with the Neo Ventilator that has a totally other character. But I actually love the sound of the Lester, its warmth, crunch and stereo width, both in slow and fast mode. It gives the Nord organ the realism and organic tone it lacks out of the box. What I "dislike" is that there is no separate remote control and that there are only few parameters to adjust.
PS: unfortunately I don’t have a real Leslie to compare with.
Perfect
❤❤❤
The Nord is maybe 70+% of the way there … but, that extra heft of analog … ❤️
I totally agree. Even if the sound is the "same", there’s is still this special feeling, experience and randomness when turning knobs at a purely analog synth.
Great sound. It's exactly what I need. I tried but couldn't get close. Can you share the .nlap file?
Thanks for your kind comment! I sold my A1 a while ago, so I cannot check my backup files. Here is a download link with two of my lead sounds (I think the "Soft Lead AS" could be the right one): we.tl/t-bqJ7GWpK4L
@@Spektralfarben-Music Thanks a lot! This video of yours had a great impact on my purchase of A1. Now I can play the same sound (Classic Lead AS is the right one, I think.) I'll be performing at a big festival this week and will be using the A1 for the first time. For solo sounds, I'll try A1 instead of Korg Prophecy. I hope it doesn't disappoint me.
@@ataakdag9445 This sounds great! Have fun, and good luck with your gig! All Nord Leads (and Stages) sound very analog and are able to produce these old-school Moogish lead sounds (that I love as well). And especially the A1 with its good effects can do these sounds easily.
@@Spektralfarben-Music Thanks Alf! I already own a Nord Stage 2, I hope they will be compatible with the A1 in terms of sound on stage. I used analog devices such as Moog LP, Solina String Ensemble, Korg Micropreset etc. during the album recordings. It is very difficult to take such devices on tour. Connecting extra reverb, delay etc. I feel like the A1 will save me from a lot of trouble. 49 keys and split function. Everything is exactly as I wanted, except for the poor keybed.
Hello Alf.We are doing a collaboration for Nightwish "Come cover me". Do you want to play the keyboard parts?

Needs to add different Leslie speaker sounds. Control of Leslie speed or variations.
Thanks for the comparison! I have a Ventilator II coming soon, but I guess the Ventilator I is the older model, isn't it?
Yes, the Ventilator 1 is the older, first generation. According to many users both generations sound identical, but the possibilities to adjust the sound are better with the Vent 2.
interesting comparison... is this the "close mic" simulation in the NS?
No, I’ve chosen the normal setting und order to have kind of a default basic sound. I found it impressive how "flat" and "unusable" the initial B3 sound of the Nord is (with no further tweaking), and how it gets instantly alive with the Lester. A quantum leap. In this comparison the Ventilator rather sounds muffled.
@@Spektralfarben-Music yes, agree 👍 the "close" sim is more effective but, within a few seconds, it becomes boring to me...
It’s strange , i have tested a lot but lately found that the organ in NS4 is really good in a live context , i have tested with GSi Vb3 II and other plugins and I prefer now the NS4 , I pass it through effect rack in Logic Pro for iPad via Apogge desktop and use the croma glow plugin , it can create wonders in uplifting the sound to fit the band , in the beginning i was disappointed with the organ engine in NS4 but not anymore , its an engine that has proven its worth over a long time span and I am glad they not rush out new updates on it cause it works on pa and monitor systems 😊
@@niellseen You’re right, playing in a band context will be no problem. But I’m using the Stage only in the home studio for recording, and there the internal sim is really unrealistic regarding stereo width (reverb is mono!) and overall tone (cold, nasal, harsh, narrow). It’s possible to tweak it and together with an additional external reverb it is quite OK. But the experience that I had by just using the Lester K without any adjustments to the organ sound (right out of the box) , was mind blowing.
@@Spektralfarben-Music i Use the GSi rotary plugin when recording , it sounds fantastic , the iOS version unfortunately doesn’t have midi learn but on the os version in Logic/mainstage i can set the rotary fast slow to the sustain pedal as I prefer , the Logic vintage rotary also sounds super , i think the NS4 sounds fantastic when recording in as audio , i can drop a lot of my plugins 😊
It sounds so good, calm expressive and very well played!

Thanks for your kind comment! Unfortunately I can’t remember what settings I used at that time, it’s been quite a while. I guess a combination of a ping pong delay, the stereo reverb and of course some distortion.
@@Spektralfarben-Music Thanks for responding! If possible, could you please try to find the settings? No big deal if you can't, but that would be cool!

How did you attach your music rest at the back? By the way, Awsome Piano sounds🥰
Thank you for your kind words. This is the original music holder from Nord. It is simply inserted into the two existing holders at the back of the instrument. It's very stable and quite durable.
Thanks Alf. Very useful as usual. How do you compare the leslie sound between the internal Stage 4 rotary and the vent. Is it worth setting up the vent to play live with a band?
It’s very subjective and also depending on genre or situation. I actually like the Nord organ sound both with the internal Sim and the Ventilator. I think, if I would play live, I would use the internal Sim for an easier setup. See here my detailed comparison: ua-cam.com/video/1KfNGMeQoR4/v-deo.htmlsi=assnbho1RhpJPKqr
The biggest downside in my opinion for the Vent is that you can only switch slow/fast on the module itself. If I were able to mount a half moon switch on my NS4 73 to control it, then I would consider buying a Vent. But otherwise, I agree with Spektral about the easier setup.@@Spektralfarben-Music
Did they ever add back the rotor/horn balance setting ?
No, unfortunately not (until now). There are only settings for horn/rotor speed and acceleration, key click and leakage, and in the latest revision a "close mic" button. I never understood why they limited the organ settings so extremely in their "flagship". At least the organ does sound quite well despite these quirks.
Yes.
which piano setting?
Hi and thanks for listening! As written, it's the Studio Grand 2 (V6, XL) without any EQing, timbre, Dyn Comp, or effects. Just a bit Stage reverb, KB TOUCH "Med".
@@Spektralfarben-Music thx. Playing grand XL on my Stage 4 88 which I got 9 months ago. Bach always struggle between 3 Nords, they’re all so good. “Middle class problems” they’re called !
@@johnscott4693 😄
@@johnscott4693 Yes, the Nord piano samples are extremely "organic" and full of life, and I also often cannot decide which one to use. In the end, my favorites are now this new Studio Grand 2, the Royal Grand and the Pearl Upright. I rarely use the White Grand although I like the richness of its sound.
good! just go thru settings and let us see the display. v4 is killer!
Yes, thanks! I hope you’re able to see the parameters in the display. The video is unfortunately not as sharp as I hoped.
No Close Mic nor Poly B3 percussion functions in prior NS4 versions :(
Oh, I didn't know. And I assume there is no possibility to access these functions in another way (menu)? Whereas the poly percussion is some kind of "gimmick" (because classic Hammonds don't offer this), the close mic is really helpful - almost necessary - to get a more present Leslie effect. And I totally agree that it's a shame that Clavia offers less possibilities to adjust the organ sound in their "flagships" than in the Electro series. Never understood this limiting decision.
I was wondering how Nord left the organ on this one…and its nice
Thanks for you comment. Although I'm not sure I've understood what you mean. Are you wondering why Nord did not improve the B3 organ compared to the Stage 3?
@@Spektralfarben-Music wondering if they had improved on the stage 3…mostly the rotary
@@steveraschella8233 Well, I had the Stage 3 before but couldn't compare them side by side (I had to sell it to be able to buy the 4). Anyway, the basic tone/sound is basically the same (incl. percussion, chorus/vibrato section, rotary drive). They even limited the global organ settings compared to the Stage 3, but added the "close mic" button and the "Angle" function. All in all most listeners wouldn't notice any difference at all. I'm slightly happier with the overall B3 sound of the NS4 when using the "close mic" with the right EQ settings than I was before with the version 3. But perhaps this is "psychological" ;) I often wanted to tell the people at Clavia/Nord to implement the HX3 engine from Keyboardpartner into the Stage, Electro and also a new Nord C3D organ - this would be a real game changer and again a much more serious competition with Hammond and Viscount.
@@Spektralfarben-Music that rotary change is profound…gotta sell some keyboards!
@@steveraschella8233 I actually sold 3 keyboards to buy the Stage 4 Compact - I don't regret it.
Very nice, thanks! Gonna put this in a B3-program on my Stage 4

Well, I sold the Voyager a couple of years ago. Sometimes I regret it 😅
@@Spektralfarben-Music shame :(. I sold an Old School and bought an Explorer about 10 years ago and added a 2022 model D last year :)
@@stevehunt2125 Great! At the moment the second-hand prices for Voyagers are insane (at least in Europe). Perhaps when they decrease to a adequate level, I’ll check the market…
@@Spektralfarben-Music I can’t see them getting much cheaper unless they do a reissue. I considered selling the voyager after getting the model D but decided to keep it. Love that thing!! My the way I make the Low Frequency Expander. Nice to meet you.
@@stevehunt2125 Yes, the pleasure is mine. I hope Moog will bring out a new Voyager or at least a comparable 2-osc synth with the genes of the Voyager (fully programmable and one knob per function), that sounds the classic Moog way and not like these Subs (never liked their sound).
