Mostly banjo, in styles that are all over the place.
I Miss When Records Sounded Human (What Happened?)
I miss when studio recordings had little details that reminded us it was made by humans, and not a dehumanized AI product that was written by 54 people.
Whether it be a deep breath, a foot tap, a throat clear, or pick noise, I miss all that. Why isn't it in modern music? Am I just not listening to the right modern music?
Thanks for watching,
Tyler

I Always Call Your Name (The Gillis Brothers)
Переглядів 2022 години тому
Tuning: Standard The Gillis Brothers are, in my opinion, the best bluegrass group in Modern Times (if you'd consider 1990's modern). All of their songs are great, both originals and covers. If you like hard driving bluegrass you should give them a listen. This is from their album "Sunshine In The Shadows". It is FINALLY getting warm enough to be able to pick outside. The goofy groundhog says it...
Going Across The Mountain - Fretless Mountain Banjo

Tuning: Standard (relative) Banjo: Gramps Teel Mountain Banjo I did this one a while ago, but I wanted to try it again now that I had some more time with this banjo in particular. I was still new to tuning lower/higher to match my voice and I think I went a bit too low on the previous recording of it trying to match too closely to how Frank Proffitt sang and played it. Anywho this is an old civ...
The Golden Harp (1869) - Two Finger Banjo

Can you guess what I'm gonna say? Yes, this too, is one of my favorite old hymns. Do I say that every time I upload a hymn? Yes, I do and I surely always will. Ever since I heard Old Scarecrow do this one, I can't get it out of my head and have watched his version every day. Might as well make it my alarm clock song at this point. Go watch his version if you are reading this and you feel so inc...
When Sorrows Encompass Me Round (1800's) - Two Finger Banjo

One of my favorite old hymns (I know, I know, I say that about all of the hymns I do). It was written by John Dowling, not sure on the specific date it was written but it was during his life from May 12, 1807 July 4, 1878. @ZacSokolowdoes it better but I borrowed some of his lyrics/delivery/playing style so credit to him. Zac's performance: ua-cam.com/video/yULdAPgzIDI/v-deo.html A good read on...
There's Not A Thing For a Poor Man in This World - Fretless Mountain Banjo
Переглядів 2,2 тис.День тому
This is an old Frank Proffitt song. His son, Frank Proffitt Jr, talked about how Frank and his grandfather, Nathan Hicks came over and "played their misery out". That's a great way to describe playing this song. Frank Proffitt played this on the Mountain Dulcimer but I came up with my own arrangement on the Mountain Banjo. Frank Proffitt Jr. talking about what Frank Proffitt's thought process w...

With Old Scarecrow on Fiddle and Knox on Banjo. @Yallquietendown @knoxmassey6822 This melody originated in Boston Massachusetts in 1843 and was composed by Daniel Decatur Emmett. Good read on the tune here: hdl.huntington.org/digital/collection/p16003coll4/id/7798/ Thanks for watching, Tyler
How A Small YouTube Channel Changed My Life (You Should Make One Too)
Переглядів 18714 днів тому
I would have never thought that a year later from when this channel was first created we would be where we are now. Not in numbers, subs, or views. But in the community aspect. Sure this is an extremely small channel, but it is BIG to me. I have met some people who have changed my life through the creation of this channel. It sounds ironic and or exaggerative but it is true. I think everyone sh...
A Traditional Two Finger Picking Pattern Every Banjo Player Should Know
Переглядів 37214 днів тому
You hear this right hand picking pattern from traditional Kentucky banjo pickers like Roscoe Holcomb and Granville Bowlin. It is by far, my favorite style of 2 finger picking. I love the drive that it has. It can seem complicated at first, but slowing it down it's actually quite simple and I think anyone can get a hold of it and make it work. Usually it's done thumb and index, but I do thumb an...

I just wanted to tell y'all I was making a mountain banjo album in a fun way. Remember those CD commercials you'd see at like 3 am? Don't really attempt to call 1-800-BOLL-WEEVIL. I'll put it out on this channel as well as Spotify, for my millions of monthly listeners and subscribers. Here's the (final?) tracklist Troubles (Trad.) Eva Creech (Orig.) Bury Me Beneath the Willow Tree (Trad.) Morph...
Troubles (Traditional) - Fretless Mountain Banjo
Переглядів 1,1 тис.21 день тому
This is a traditional song that I like to sing when my troubles are so deep I can't eat or sleep. It's been a while since I recorded on here with the mountain banjo, I tend to get this one out in the dead of winter when I'm not feeling as chipper. The sun is gone, snow is on the ground, it's cold. It's a good instrument for some more mellow playing. Anywho, I am working on recording an album fe...

Clinch Mountain Backstep - The Best Bluegrass Instrumental Ever Written
Переглядів 69921 день тому
I am still having fun with multi track recording. I believe it adds a little bit more to the bluegrass banjo instrumentals that I record. Although, it's a HECK of a lot of work to get everything edited and synced up for just a 1 minute video. So, if you're reading this, you've just contractually agreed to hit like on this video, and subscribe if you aren't. IF you fail to hold up your end of th...
Newton Grove - A Highly Underrated Bluegrass Banjo Instrumental
Переглядів 41228 днів тому
Wanted to have some fun with some multi track recording. Turns out it is pretty hard to sync everything up both by audio and visually. It is reminiscent of those old Godzilla dubs where the lips are moving but the words are delayed. However, I had fun making it! This tune was written by Richard Underwood, the original player for The Johnson Mountain Boys. It's a top 5 bluegrass instrumental in ...

fantastic banjo & singing bluegrass performance Tyler ,,,,,,,,,,,greetings Renee from Australia
Cool!
I have a good few examples of these little “human” elements in old recordings. My favourite is on an old Clayton McMichen record. During the fiddle break, the guitar player (Riley Puckett) keeps playing this super annoying and repetitive G run. Each time he does it, he goes a little more off beat. I don’t know if he did it on purpose to trip up Clayton, but it cracks me up whenever I hear it.
When I took jazz band I had this professor, he said he kinda dreaded classical music because how you're supposed to play is how it's written on the sheet, there's no room for interpretation, but when he started playing jazz is where he really found himself, because nothing is a mistake, it's personal expression. That being said there's another term in jazz, in the pocket. When you play in the pocket it means you've got it down so well, you're not just playing it, you got it locked in, the syncopation, the anticipation, the groove, the way you're in sync with the rest of the band. It might sound elitist but when Ralph messed up he wasn't playing in the pocket. They should have stopped right there and re recorded. As for the throat clearing tho, the way he did it definitely got some personal expression in it.
This is why i love this channel, real people and real artists, no matter how experienced we are, making real music and understanding the heart and soul of what our music is really supposed to be, i am so thankful I've found a group of like minded friends that keep this music alive still today and inspire me to keep playing the music that i love so much. Thanks everyone!!!
Underrated video
Thanks Mr. Turd
I love it when I hear ‘em spittin’ tobaccy!
I have yet to hear that one!
@ Check out the song, “Willie Brennan,” by Neil Morris. It’s on one of the Alan Lomax collections. Super cool song and I’ve always wanted to learn it someday on the banjo. Anyway, right after Willie meets the peddler, Julius Vaughn, you hear Neil spit. I don’t know if it was actually tobacco or not. The song also has plenty of deep nasal breathing. 😄
This is all the more relevant a discussion since the rise of AI-rendered so-called "music".
Yes it is. I could go on and on, maybe I'll do a longer video about it. It's something I think a lot about.
I’ve always loved the little mislicks and mashed notes on old records… I love in Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms how Earl in his backup goes a fret flat and instantly corrects it mid roll… it ain’t just music. In today’s society it’s astonishing how much of the human element is being or already has been eliminated. Take all these automatic machines when you call places such as pharmacies and other places of business… we’ve almost been automated to death!
Amen! I especially love hearing the wrong notes. You are spot on about automation. Maybe that's bled over a bit into music.
This why I like a lot of field recordings, probably. They're about documenting the music rather than presenting it as a commodity; actually UA-cam is a good repository of unedited performances once you get down to the smaller channels catering to specialised audiences. Zak Sokolow loses a string off the bridge at the end of one of his older videos and laughs it up - doesn't hurt anything to leave it in and invites you to have a laugh too. Jobless Worried Blues, I think.
You're right! UA-cam is a great resource for genuine performances. I am often impressed with what I see on here.
I think it’s the mixers, back then they just sang around one mic nothing fancy. It came from the heart and wasn’t messed with. Also I noticed in the old Stanley brothers songs at the end you’ll hear them lean back in their chairs which I’ve always found cool!!

I've always noticed that too! I love little details like that brother. I agree entirely.
Definitely a lot to think about. I think musicians tend to obsess over "perfection" in their performances, anything that falls even slightly short of robotic precision is deleted and redone. Seeing a favourite musician fumble a chord or hit a flat note can be really endearing and there is humour and personality to be found in it. You gotta laugh it off. We seem to be afraid of mistakes or imperfection and so try to erase it
You are absolutely correct. That personality/humor is lost when it's stripped away! I like it personally.
And going even farther back in time it’s a shame that singing and playing music among families got replaced by radio, TV, records, CDs, and now internet. Growing up the only place I got real live music was at church. Nobody hardly plays music anymore. And if you do play music other people would rather listen to their digital recordings anyway
It is a daggone shame. It has people driving all over the country to play music together 😂
Do y'all ever notice this or feel the same way? What do you think happened along the way to make modern music so overproduced?
I never knew the back story to the song, really interesting to hear Proffitt's family history. Great as always. Loving the bolo tie of course
Thank you Lachlann! It is really interesting.
Thanks once again Tyler, sounding great!
Thank you for the kind words Danny!
Whoa ... sizzling. Nobody Came also grabbed my attention, so clearly I should educate myself about the Gillis Brothers.
They are a real great hard driving bluegrass band. Thanks Mr. Wivern.
The rooster appreciate......good tune and picking...the rooster is it french ?😅
That must be why I can never understand what the rooster saying! Maybe you can help me decipher. 😂
This is what I call grass right here… definitely no cutter cookie stuff like a lot of the “modern” sound today…! That damn rooster at the end knew it too!😁
Amen!!! Thank you for the kind words brother.
Crazy good man! Love the Gillis brothers! Wish they’d come back! Heard they were a few years back but also heard they decided against it for whatever reason? Anyway… you slayed it here buddy!👍👍👍👍
I wish they'd come back too! The modern BG scene lacks a real traditional hard driving sound right now in my opinion. We need to spread more Archtop propaganda to get it back 😂
Crazy good playin
Thank you!
The rooster really liked it! Me too!
Thank you Chris!
That first break up the neck was nuts! Well done, brother! 😁
Thank you brother!
beautiful picking as always!
Thank you kindly!
Lyrics: Lord I never knew the right way Many times I called your name in vain But when my life is down in trouble I always seem to call your name In a church house Sunday morning I prayed for the Lord to save me there He bid me to come and listen On my knees I said a prayer I want to walk the righteous pathway To that mountain up yonder I will climb In your footsteps I will follow To my home upon Mount Zion
😊 very very good onthe appalachian style banjo..you are best contunation soul of blue mountains
Thank you greatly!

Love that one! Love your Mountain style banjo!👍
Thank you brother 🙏
Beautiful tune Sir. 🎶🪕🎶
Thank you kindly!
Anyways very well done Tyler 🔥
I'm going down a rabbit hole looking up his family. His niece died this year on January 18. He does have living blood was just a bit hard to find.
Oh wow, very interesting. Thank you!
Great sounding. Thanks
Thank you!
What's the banjo tuning?
Standard G, gDGBD. Could be a few steps lower.
You can make that banjo ring ❤ and your singing is so nice
Thank you!
Really good ,love it 👍💪🇺🇸
Thank you!
That one slapped me plumb in the calaboose!
Better than being stabbed in the heart with a bayonet!
Very nice! [But the real poors rep Rural King and Key.]
Thank you Clif, the TSC hat was $4.99 brand new 😂
You’re killing it brother! Would you mind dropping the tuning in your descriptions? Glad I came across your channel
Thanks! Yeah I will do that from now on.
This is great!!!!
I could play Wild Bill Jones all day! Earlier I played Jubilee for 30 minutes.
Awesomeness!👍
Thank you brother 🙏
i like this a lot :)
Thank you!
your enthusiasm really comes through in your playing, you make that bright, ringing, bell-like aspect of the instrument really come through, at times it's got a sitar twang, it's really beautiful, and your vocals compliment it flawlessly. I often curse the youtube algorithm for serving up slop, but your channel is pure gold.
Wow, this was such a good comment to read. Thanks friend! Glad the magic algorithm sent me your way/you my way!
Excellent picking, I’m telling that 3-2-5-1 roll is the supreme roll for two finger banjo, i started messing around with it on this tune and it sounds fantastic as well.
Thank you! That roll pattern is good!
