Postcards Tell Tales: Lars Fischer on his new book Jewish Palestine
Jewish Palestine is the new book scheduled to be published in the Jewish in Postcards series from Vintage Press. Their violent expulsion in late antiquity notwithstanding, Jews have lived in the area the Roman occupiers renamed Palestine continuously for several thousand years. By the 1860s, Jews once again formed more than half of Jerusalem’s population. This earlier Jewish population and their institutions-constantly in need of financial assistance from Jewish communities elsewhere-are generally referred to as the Old Yishuv (a Hebrew word for settlement).
Dr. Lars Fischer has divided the book into thematic sections and segments that focus on individual photographers or postcard producers. Here he shared with us some of the postcards and stories behind them that show the Jewish Yishuv in Palestine.
Lars Fischer’s scholarship and publications focus on the history and conceptualization of antisemitism, Jewish/non-Jewish relations, and Frankfurt School Critical Theory. Fischer has taught at UCL, King’s College London and the University of Cambridge and served as Secretary of the British Association for Jewish Studies and Councillor of the Royal Historical Society.

What's in a (Jewish) Name? with Dr. Debby Koren
Переглядів 945 місяців тому
For Crypto-Jews who returned openly to Judaism, use of a Jewish name, perhaps the one they had before converting, perhaps one their parents had secretly given them, or perhaps one they adopted upon their return to Judaism, was clearly an important aspect of their renewed identity. How important is our name to our identity today? How important was a Jewish name to a Jew’s identity throughout the...

Celebrating Freedom under Captivity in Portugal c. 1500 with Rabbi Shlomo Pereira

Passover, the Festival of Freedom, in 1497 was marked in Portugal by serious tragedies for the Jewish people. In 1497 Jews suffered spiritual slaughter through forced conversion and kidnapping of children. Is it that the enemies of the Jewish people - then and now - seem to know exactly when to strike to maximize pain? Pharaoh kidnapped and killed the Israelite children and then worked them alm...

I read somewhere that Chinese and the Far East people are actually descendants of Yoktan. Yemenis are more likely descendants of Cush. They and the Ethiopians are pretty much the same people. They are a lot of mixing, though. People are not homogeneous. Men have a tendency to take wives from other places.

Yemen Jews existed long before islam showed up.. the lies islam sell.m Yemenite Jews long before islam read Torah and learnt. They did not learn a style to read study from any islams. How the islams make many false claims but can't prove it in history they can't even proof their Koran is authentic so islam need many extra books to tell what Koran is in many mixed stories not all same if it's authentic there are 5.. schools of thought all different. wheres the authentic Koran with so many books to confirm it?? When something's real it don't need confirmation. Torah was not learnt from islams way.islam took from Jewish ways Torah was there long before islam showed up that's true and it's time humans start be honest what's truth not twist everything around as if they perfect islam Koran has lots of flaws in islams people.

I was also in love with Yemenite Irit Siani who I met on Kibbutz Ma'agen by the Kinneret or Sea of Galilee. The last I heard was that she went to New York to get married having been living with a Dutch Protestant on kibbutz. Poor Ofra died of AIDS but her voice lives forever. End
