Performances on synth, mainly of Bach and mainly on Moog, but sometimes on other things and of other peoples' music.
Contrapunctus 1 from Bach's Art of Fugue, BWV 1080, on the Moog
This is one of Bach's most well-known pieces from the Art of Fugue, and one of my favourites as well. I've got my hands on a complete edition though so I'm looking forward to diving into some of the lesser-known ones!

Crab canon from Bach’s Musical Offering, on the Moog

Bach's most beautiful and mysterious piece
Переглядів 2 тис.28 днів тому
Even if you didn't know this was a canon, you might still agree that this piece is beautiful and mysterious in character; add to that the fact that the bottom two voices follow each other in a canon at no less an interval than the seventh (!), and the fact that this piece is beautiful to listen to at all becomes another one of the mysteries of Bach's genius that we are able to enjoy to this day...
Gigue from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 4, on the Moog Sub37
Переглядів 1,3 тис.28 днів тому
This Gigue is relentless! You'll see me using the Oscillator II on/off switch to create the echo dynamics that are indicated in the Barenreiter edition. An interesting thing is that Bach organised this Gigue in a way that very nearly can be called sonata form; it only lacks a formal second theme. It's cool to see a transitional style of piece from the more free-form Baroque style of binary form...
Prelude in G Major from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1

When I began this project of playing through Bach's Cello Suites on the Moog, I put my iPhone on a small tripod, put that on a stool, pointed it at the keyboard while I played and took a video that mostly featured the back of my right sleeve. It was rewarded with more views than I expected, and many kind comments, but now that I've learned more about video production and synth technique I wante...

0:00 Bourrée I 2:56 Bourrée II 4:00 Bourrée I repeated with modulation Bach contrasted a long, elaborate first Bourrée with a much shorter, simpler one that I featured in an earlier video. Because it's customary to repeat the first after playing the second, this ended up being quite a long video! I had two aims with the patch settings: first, contrast the second Bourrée with the earlier perform...
Fantasie No. 2 in A Minor by Telemann, on the Moog

0:00 Grave 0:31 Vivace 1:51 Adagio 2:51 Allegro This one is for the Telemann gang! I've come to quite enjoy this Fantasia in particular, with the spiky and quirky Vivace movement contrasting with the very pleasant Adagio movement. I've tried to copy the sound of a tremolant sound from a Baroque organ in a cathedral for that movement in particular.
This simple Bourrée is my new favourite movement from the Cello Suites and so it gets its own video

Isn't it sweet? I'll upload another video in due course with the first Bourrée included as well, as this movement really should be presented with its companion.

Courante in E Flat from Bach's Cello Suite No. 4, on the Moog Sub37

Haven't posted for a bit because work has been busy. Join me for a quick play through this fun movement! It features more in the way of rhythmic changes than Bach's cello suite movements usually do, with semiquavers, triplets, and quavers all finding their way in there.
Fantasie No. 1 in A Major for solo flute, performed on the Moog Sub37

0:00 Vivace 1:27 Allegro - Adagio etc. 2:24 Allegro Telemann is today one of the lesser-known Baroque composers, but he was a titanic figure in his day. His solo flute fantasies are interesting in the way that they use compound melody to imply counterpoint. Some flautists like to perform these in resonant spaces to help blend the sounds together; I used the Silververb plug-in in Logic.

Allemande from Bach's Cello Suite No. 4 in E Flat Major, on the Moog
Переглядів 4663 місяці тому
I'm not saying that his first cello suite is bad or anything, but I do get the idea when playing through the suites that by the fourth one J. S. Bach was really beginning to figure out how to make the most of the form. I've come to view this humble Allemande as an example of Bach's work at the height of his powers: there is an organised structure to it, and the way the different melodic motifs ...
Duet with a digital ghost: Londonderry Air and the Mood Mk II
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 місяці тому
Happy St. Patrick's Day! The ‘digital ghost’ i mention in the title is produced by the effects pedal used in the video, the Mood Mk II. It’s pretty uncontrollable but I have a bit of a go at doing something with it here. Reading about the history of this tune, also popularly known as Danny Boy, it seems that it has been probably substantially modified from its Irish roots, which when I think ab...

Beautiful playing on a beautiful machine
Having played this suite on cello and I'm completely convinced the Prelude was written for keyboard 😂
So glad I found this channel and became a subscriber. Just curious -- when you had 6 keyboard views at once, why you didn't collapse the top 3 views into 1 by playing the notes as a chord? btw my favorite sister asked me to play this piece at her wedding (I did, on church organ, but a very simplified version) so it's a treasured memory.
Thank you! I first learned this piece on the organ, too; the Oxford Book of Wedding Music has an arrangement that is similar to this one. This particular synth is very restricted in terms of polyphony and won’t play a three-note chord, so I played the individual parts that make up the chorus in the part you are asking about.
@@NoiseSupply I heard about that limitation years back, so got it, and thank you for replying!
Magnificent!
All the polyphony one could want via modern video sorcery. Always a classic, and performed very nicely. Excellent all around. Thanks!
Thank you so much!
👍❤️👍
Officially blown awaaaay!!!
Exquisite! So precisely performed and the sound designs are so very well matched and mixed. Truly Excellent 💯
Thank you for your very kind comment!
great! what is the effect?
Cheers! Modulated reverb from Silververb, plus an LFO on the second waveform in the tenor part.
🐈 🎹 🏡
Nice work as always! Do you own or have you considered buying any of the other moog synths at some point?
Thank you! Yes, I’d quite like to purchase a synth that can do polyphonic playing, but sadly find it hard to justify from a financial point of view at the moment!
@@NoiseSupply Very understandable as good poly synths can cost as much as a car :D
This is great!
👍🎹👍
yes i think so. love to play it on my guitar!
Nice but the piece sounds way nicer on cello.
Beautiful! Also what kind of camera are you using? Great quality!
Thank you! It's a Fuji XT3 that I've stuck on the end of the heaviest C stand I could find.
Love this video! And the sound especially. I am super curious if this is a preset or if I zoom in and check the knobs I might be able to reverse engineer the sound design 🤣 shucks Looks like its a preset?
Thank you so much! It's not entirely a preset, but the knobs won't be entirely useful either as I am using an expression pedal in this video to control the filter without using my hands. I'm afraid I can't remember very easily exactly what I did, now, but I think I mentioned it to other commenters!
Telemann obviously wrote this the SUB 37 in mind. Pretty evident. Thx for executing so brilliantly.
Nice 👍🙏!
Look how the flowers are Dancing.
It's nearly spring here!
Instant sub. Handling such a wonderful organism with such a beautiful and lovely played harmonic IS real...thank you
🤟
Hey, great video. Could you try to do Fur Elise ? Anyway great vids keep it up :)
I'd think I'd make lots of very serious piano players angry if I did that! Might be worth it.
Очень чудесно звучит , какой то более романтический оттенок , в отличии от классики ...пусть с вариацией , но прекрасной вариацией.... автору респект и удачи !
Als ob man in einer riesigen Kirche mit einem höllischen Echo spielen würde… 😂
I am sure Wendy Carlos would be proud if she'd hear this.
Bravo 👏
We might have to consider that Bach was from another planet.
That’s a follow!
qui il synth è usato solo come fosse un organo elettronico senza modulazioni o filri live
nice
Love the tunes. This one included. What is the BWV number for this piece please?
Thanks! BWV 1079; you’ll find it in the ‘diverse canons’, which in my Barenreiter edition are in part 3.
@@NoiseSupply Thanks a ton. I appreciate the deep cuts from Bach's works. Currently, I'm studying counterpoint/ baroque composition and your videos serve as an excellent resource! Especially, since I feel that the music is much more digestible on synthesizer (or harpsichord 😉)
🦀 🐚 🌊
i really like this "family" of timbres that You use for this piece. They sound similar to a patch that Wendy Carlos used on Switched on Bach ,... was it Brandenburg #3 (maybe trk 11) around 1 minute & 6 seconds in. I have spent a lot of time trying to create "patches" that sound like this. Great sound , love the piece !
Thank you! I seem to remember basically using a dual-oscillator setup with this one, set between the triangle and sawtooth waveforms. The top voice was set to 8' and 2', the inner voices to (I think) 8' and 4', and the bass voice was down an octave with a touch of sub-octave added too. I also used a Strymon Brig set to a very short delay time, with the modulation setting set to around noon, for a chorusing effect. Maybe that is something like what you've tried?
@@NoiseSupply Thanks so much. I think it's the combination of triangle & saw that do something special mainly. i used to use an Arp Odyssey, and a Kat Octave, and don't really remember the settings, on those, and lately (time passes so quick 30 years later) a DX7 II, which really has trouble creating this kind of voice. Something about 3rd harmonic creates the haunting hollow mellow & triangle for the brassy sound.
A lovely sound, is it one of the sub 37 presets?
Thank you! No, this is a pretty simple patch with 8' and 4' oscillators set between the triangle and sawtooth waveforms. The main dynamic effect is switching the 4' oscillator on and off.
Sensational
This was amazing
Beautiful patch! Is your modwheel sticky too? I have a tribute sub37 from 2015 and it's hella tacky
Haha yes; it's impossible to clean!
@@NoiseSupply I put saran wrap on mine 🙂
Moogs look a lot cooler than they sound. The main reason this sounds good is because it's Bach, not because it's played on a Moog.
Wirklich schön! Danke!
Wonderful. An open door to complete perfect Understanding.
Love it!!! The cello suite is my go to studying music. I love the effects you’ve applied. Such a beautiful sound you’ve created.
Thank you!
It was excepcionally modern and creative 300 years ago, as it is today. And as it will be in 300 years. Great job.
Thank you! I agree.
@@NoiseSupplyThanks to you and your excepcional performances. Bach under an extraordinary new light. Brilliant.
me 2 ! really inspirational
Incredible organ patch. Is this created with the Sub 37 or is it triggering samples? Sounds wonderful.
Thank you! I’m pretty sure that patch is Oscillator I set to 8’, Oscillator II set to 4’, the filter set somewhere probably between noon and 1 pm, and both waveforms in between triangle and sawtooth forms.
Damn, you make me want to (finally) treat myself to a Sub/sequent 37 - even though I've maybe just sold the last of my fx pedals
Nothing wrong with the effects in DAWs! I used Logic's Silververb for this one.
@@NoiseSupply True, though the reason I originally bought the pedals (as well as a Korg Minilogue, Ableton Push 2, a few Korg Volcas, and a couple of midi controller keyboards) was to make production more of a 'hands on' experience. Unfortunately, it never got traction as a habit as I don't really have the space to have it set up permanently, which just created too much friction when inspiration struck. Consequently, the Minilogue and Push both got sold a while back too, though I've still got the Volcas. All that said, I covet the Sub/sequent 37 and it's a piece that I would most willingly 'make space' for, because it's a great looking piece of kit too. Maybe I'll keep the SuperEgo+ after all. Just in case. 😉
You know, Bach composed thousands of works. But you assholes just keep choosing the same ones.
Very nicely played 🙏🏻💎
just awesome!!!!
