Fishing Dad Advice - Getting Your Kid Into Bass Fishing Ages 0-3
Some boats engines with stators run at too high of voltage and could result in a bms over voltage disconnect I think the lipo battery manufacturers do a cya by only recommending outboards with alternators Thanks for the great review
Battery Wars is here! The competition among LiFePO4 battery companies is intense. I can't believe how much prices have dropped in the last year. Even with inflation prices continue to drop. I bought two different 12v 100Ah batteries in the last two weeks. Both were under $150.00 each. One was a Power Queen and the other was Redodo. Neither one had bluetooth but I see all the big players are coming out with this feature. LiTime has a greet reputation and I would not hesitate to buy one of their batteries.
What is your favorite lower cost 36 volt trolling motor battery?
Would you want to have Bluetooth? I did a recent buyers guide for Black Friday that may help
Yes. I watched that video. Lots of good content. I am looking to replace my 3 - 12 volt lead acid batteries with a single 36 volt lithium unit. Looking at the Li Time 36 volt 100 amp lithium. And replacing my AGM 12 volt cracking battery for li time 140 amp 12 volt lithium too. I have pole charge so it can charge all those. I called the manufacturer. Just want to pick some lithium batteries that won’t break the bank. I like the Bluetooth and cold weather features on those batteries. I also like the heater on the Li Time cranking 12 volt 140 amp. What do you think about Li Time 36 volt 100 amp vs their 50 amp? Or would you choose a different 36 volt? Power pole also recommends one single volt 36 volt lithium battery versus 3 - 12 Volt lithiums. 😂
@donjohnstonjr2647 I think my biggest hesitation is the size of the 100ah battery. It's over 20" long, which can be a challenge to package into a lot of different boats. The 36v 50Ah is about how much power you had when your lead acids were new. If that worked then, then the 50Ah will work out just fine.
2 bank charger
I have 2 battery and go 24v , how should I connect then monitor ?
How are you charging it?
I got all 5
do they make chargers that will stop at 80% charge? Seems like a great product to produce haha
Not really. The best way to manage this is within the BMS. It should be super simple for it to charge to X% and every Nth cycle to go to 100% to balance.
def learned somethin'
I have a dumb battery (no bluetooth) and a dumb charger, so I don't have a good way to determine SOC. I typically charge up every time simply because I usually don't know how much I will need the next time out. My buddy who converted to lithium years before I did operated the same way and his battery is currently somewhere around seven years old and still retains 95+% capacity (he has a smart charger now that shows this, but didn't for many years). I bought the same battery he has (Battleborn) and I had to have it replaced under warranty after three years because it dropped to 50% capacity. I believe it went bad due to a defect and not because of how I charged it, but I can't prove that.
Just throwing this out there ecoflow just came out with a 12 volt 100ah deep cycle marine trolling motor battery for about 217 dollars but it doesn’t have Bluetooth .Good quality cells with 6000 cycles and good vibration protection. But you need a battery monitor(shunt) because lifepo4 Should be stored around 50 percent not 100 percent and for best cycle life should use from 100 percent to bms reading of zero. This may seem controversial but just check with will prowse on utube
Looking to upgrade my trolling motor batteries, running a 36v ultrex 112lb thrust. Fish tournaments usually from 7a-3p. Wondering if 3 12v 50ah will do me good and be enough power. Thinking power queen or li time. What are your thoughts.
36v @ 50Ah will work for that as long as you aren't fighting heavy current. I have a preference for the LiTime brand as I have far more experience with them
@ I was debating between 50ah and 100ah as well. Do have some windy days in my area. Currently running 3 duracell group 24 lead acid batteries on my boat and my trolling motor is donezo after like 5-6 hours.
How long that battery last you without charging
How long of a day would you have with this 100ah and a 55 thrust Minn kota ? Roughly
I've fished for 6-7 hours on a 45lb thrust with a 100Ah and still had 60% remaining. It varies greatly on how hard you're running the motor.
@goodmanfishing thanks
Thats a chance i just can't take when im on the water. Or on ice. And all my lithiums come with a 10yr warranty. So if they crap out before then, thats fine their on warranty. If i can get 10yrs out of these im more than happy. And you should check other sources. Some say theres more damage done by not having them at 100%
Which batteries are you running?
@goodmanfishing lots. Dakota 12v/10amp on ice finders. 30amp on another. Power Queens and li time 12v/100amp on my diesel heaters and 2 more power queens in the boat. Haven't had 1 issue yet. Going on 4yrs or more on all of them
Degrading, not degredading. Good info otherwise
Will one litmus 38.5 blutooth run a minkota 120 thrust ultrex for a full day? Would I need two?
How many hours of fishing are you referring to as a full day? Lake? River?
How about 6 hours in fast river current?@@goodmanfishing
I would expect 1x36v 50Ah to be fine for that.
Hi, great video! I ordered and just received shipment of this battery based off your video. Definitely excited. But, the manual states “this is not intended to be used to start any devices, please DO Not use it as a starting battery”. Clearly you have been using it. My plan was to used this as a cranking battery for a 2019 Yamaha 90 hp SHO and run electronics. Any reason to not move forward? Thx for your input!
sounds like a good way to not go above 90% charge and avoid degrading a lithium battery
While true, the battery must be occasionally charged to 100% to balance the cells. That's quite important to long life and overall performance.
This is awesome info! Thank you. I have a question tho. I'm planning on upgrading to a 24v trolling motor with spot lock and my lake is pretty windy on average. I was planning on a 100ah I tend to go out for most of the day. Would that be overkill?
I would expect 25+ hours of fishing out of a 100Ah at 24v. Of course it depends on the wind, size of the boat, etc. but it's quite a bit of energy. Same equivalent as four lead acid deep cycle batteries.
Awesome thank you I think I will try the 50ah first if I need to I can get a second if needed
How long does a 24 volt 50 ah battery last. I am currently using 2 - group 27 AGM
It will last a full day of fishing. Similar capacity to your group 27 AGMs when they were new.
So I'm leaving mine plugged in all the time
Good.. 😊
Hooked two LiTime100ah TM batteries up to my RV. They are working great! Definitely recommend these batteries, teo cost what one of most of the other brands cost. Now to see how long they last.
Glad to hear you're happy with your new batteries!
So alternator/run n gun chargers that keep your lithium batteries charged up while big motor is running are not good things to use ? Many lithium battery mfgs are now offering them.
"good" and "ideal" dont always align. They're "good" if you use a lot of energy and need to quickly replenish it while on the water. That charging profile isn't "ideal" for the batteries.
The problem with all of this is that, it’s good until something happens, I don’t speak Chinese, what happen to you get what you pay for, now I could complete wrong,
They're support is handled via email and has been pretty decent. It's not going to be as good as NA-based companies. That said, they're also half or less than half the cost. You could buy multiple batteries for the same $
@ if you had to choose one of those which one would you choose
LiTime would get my $$
I have been in contact with their support via email…for questions not a problem…less than 24hr turnaround and very fluid English. My opinion is it has been excellent so far.
I bought the 2 pack Litime 12V 100Ah group 24 (Model L12V100-RV-Pack2-US-0) for my trolling motor. It doesn't have the blue tooth monitoring. What is a good option to see live feedback on the state of the batteries?
Amped outdoors makes a decent add-on bluetooth monitor.
I wish the LiTime 24V 50Ah TM LiFePO4 Lithium Marine Trolling Motor Bluetooth Battery came in self-heated model :(
I've not seen too many self heated higher voltage options. Where are you operating the battery?
@@goodmanfishing I am in Pennsylvania. LiTime does offer the 12V 100Ah Group 24 Bluetooth LiFePO4 Lithium Deep Cycle Battery with Self Heating, but again, I am trying to reduce from 2 batteries to 1 for my TM.
Love the info video!!! Does the same rule apply for my electric bike lithium battery witch is a big long ranch battery???
You would need to know what chemistry that battery is for that determination, LFP, NMC, etc.
Love this info video and thank you!!! Is it the same rule for my electric bike lithium battery????? witch is a very large one????
You'll need to identify which battery chemistry you are working with. This content is LiFePO4-specific. Many bike batteries are different chemistries that are more energy dense.
Price seem to be coming down rapidly on lithium batteries. Yippee. It's the unknown of the names that concerns me. I get that this is a new and vibrant market. Thanks for your work. I am trying to find the best way to upgrade the 5 batteries in my boat.
The cells themselves are quite common across many of the brands. I'm not aware of any US or North American made battery cells that are going into LiFePO4 batteries. From there the build quality across the "budget" brands has caught up FAST over the last two years. Some of the "bigger" name budget brands are creating a better support network every year.
@@goodmanfishing What is the difference between "Budget" brands and others?
I have had a 24V LiPo4 with Terrova trolling system for less than a year. I have been charging them to 100% upon returning from a 4-6 hour river fishing trip. I am having hip replacement surgery in a week then going to Florida for two months. They are fully charged right now. How long should I let the prop rotate if I turn them on while boat is on trailer in driveway to get to 40-60%? Or should I do that at all? And is there an easy way to check % used/remaining?
Does your battery have bluetooth or a way to monitor the status?
Great information thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
If I installed that shunt on a 36v system with 3 batteries, would it give me the Ah remaining on 1 battery or all 3?
I, am working in a moto school in Québec where we have long winter 4 year ago we change all the batterie for lithium and kept them all winter long on intelligent charger in the spring 5 months later, all the bike started but all the batterie were not able to keep there charge So we haded to change them all again only after only one year. The next winter we were advised to charge them only one time in the middle of the winter for a day only, which we did, never have a problem since They lasted. we are talking 15 Honda 500 so I completely agree on what you talking Thanks for the video from a French Canadian 👍😊
"Probably in one of two boats"... pun intended? lol.
💯%!
Can you please make a video of how you do a capacity test?
Micheal, what are the reasons a lithium batteries protection system will shut your battery down ? I know letting it go to 0 volts will shut it down. So if I’m on my boat and battery shuts down what are all the causes? And how would you get it back on while you are on the water ? Have ever had one that had plenty of charge turn off on the water ?
Depends on the BMS, this seems to be a symptom of using a non-starting or dual-purpose battery in a starting application. The outboard continues to charge and the battery can't do anything with that power so it disconnects. The BMS usually turns off around 10.5v as Lithium cells do not recover when ran down lower. Typically. I'm not sure if you're referring to being out on the boat and "the battery shuts down", if that is in a trolling application or cranking? I've never had that situation with any of the batteries.
@ has your BMS ever turned a battery off trolling or Duel purpose while you were on the water ?
Nope. Never.
What happens when you don’t charge them and run out of battery on the water because you were trying to keep them in a range that you can’t actually measure?
There are aftermarket solutions for monitoring battery SOC as well as batteries available with bluetooth connectivity. It can actually be measured. Given that, I would expect the operator has an idea of the expected consumption during a day of fishing and accounts for that before going out. It should be an abnormal situation that would cause the battery to be completely depleted, like the outboard dies for other reasons and you have to troll for miles.
Just charge to 14V with full absorption no harm done no matter how often you charge. Calendar aging is going to have more effect on cell life than constantly charging to 14 or 14,2V
How do you check the capacity of a battery?
I use something like this that pulls a load and monitors the output of the battery to determine usable capacity. amzn.to/414I0uL
Looks like a good option for a trolling motor, but a little overpriced for stationary solar battery bank, where size and weight don't matter as much as bulk storage.
That's a fair point, it's a little pricier than other options.
can you try to look at some 24 an 36 volt also
Hello - I have a recent video on a 24v 50Ah. I've done a video on a MillerTech and LiTime 36v. I also have a Redodo 36v that I am currently testing!
Would the BMS system not manage the charge cycle to optimize these ranges- for example the power-pole charge? It seems logical to me that the BMS should account for this so all you have to do is plug them in and let the BMS manage the charge cycle?
With all of the bluetooth connected batteries now, they really need to add more functionality to the app. It's a missed opportunity by the manufacturers. Rather than just letting us see the status, we should be able to set charge limits and every "X" cycle let it charge to 100% to let it balance. Shouldn't be hard to do!
So is there a way to test your batteries capacity?
Yes sir. The basic way I use is one of these testers. Charge the battery and it records the wattage consumed and gives you the results. amzn.to/48P78Hv
So you are saying a DC to DC charger in an automotive application is no good
Everyone has different needs, the battery needs to do the job first. From there, you can evaluate the best way to manage it. Keeping the battery at or near 100% for the majority of the time is not ideal.
@@goodmanfishing if this is the case why Do I need a DC to DC charger for lithium with higher charge rate 14.6 or 13.6 float I should be able to just use a standard charger that doesn’t go as high as they say needed for lithium batteries
I just bought 2 WattCycle batteries. It was recommended by another popular channel, before I discovered your channel. I’m very happy to see that you also recommend the choice.
Good choice!
Loved the video. Thanks. I'm curious of what you think about the Watt Cycle 12v 300AH Mini battery. I'm thinking of building a couple of power boxes with this battery as the storage component.
That is a lot of capacity at 12v. Have you considered going to a higher voltage for your application?
Great educational video. I appreciate it. I have the same motor as you, similar boat. My question is what top RPM were you running on the prop you chose?
Right at 6000 loaded. Using Vessel View for the rpm, not the stock tach (it's way off)
@@goodmanfishing thanks
Tanks for edvice bro, mucho apreciado 😎
No problem!
I wonder how much damage I’ve done? Charged it to 100% seventy times this summer. Now I know! I will draw it down to 50% for winter storage. Thanks for schooling us.
I bet you're in good shape, hope it helps!
