This is the first extended trip on my 1981 Flicka. I first saw a Flicka on the waters of Yaquina Bay at Newport Oregon in 1982. I had just bought my first Montgomery 17 and was on my maiden voyage when a Flicka sailed past. I’ve always been drawn to them like steel to a magnet. I love my 2005 Montgomery 17 and never thought about buying another sailboat. In December 2023 Corazon kinda dropped i...

@@artman133 hi Art, it’s a CDI 2. Thanks for tuning into my channel
Dave ! An Amazing chronicle in beautiful photos. It was a special pleasure to sit next to chat with you in Swanstown (2023). I was able to complete about half the Salish 2024 before my health caused me to pull out. But I n my Vera Mae got to experience a dab of the treasures you have amazing memories of. Fair Wind n gentle following seas aboard your new Flicka. Nick
@@coalfieldbeelovergerald3687 Good morning Nick, thanks, it was also a pleasure sharing time with you on the dock. I’m happy to hear you experienced part of the Salish 💯. I hope your health is improving and you’ll feel like taking part in next years Salish event. Thank you for continuing to watch and leave comments on my channel. See you on the water someday, David
Hi David, I was fortunate to sail aboard Corozòn (neé “Kawabunga!”) in 2006 or so. My wife and I had previously lived happily aboard 2 Flickas in succession, an old ferro version in FL and a nicely home finished PS hull/deck version in Olympia in the 90s. Around 2006-7 I was able to convince the then owner to put that ProFurl on there, which pretty much changed everyone’s life overnight! We just encountered Corozón at Arabellas dock last week, and just stood there and drooled, basically. Such lovely memories, thank you for the video! Fair winds, Mike Phillips
Thank you for sharing your adventure. I had thought about a Montgomery 17 for sometime but it was while watching your adventures I decided on getting one and last Monday I brought one home. I will be documenting my refit and adventure. I can only hope to encourage others as you have encouraged me. Thanks again
Good Morning Art, I thought I replied to your comment earlier, I guess not. Thank you for watching me and Tramontana travel the PNW. I always love hearing that my videos helped to bring another sailor into the Montgomery world. They are fantastic sailboats that will keep you safe during any adventure you decide to take.
Congratulations on your M17 purchase! Will you post your documentation on the Montgomery facebook site, UA-cam or both? I look forward to watching you and your M17 as you make her yours. Enjoy!
Thank you, yes I do hope to be documenting both the refit and my adventures. At my age (64) I might call it “The Adventures of an old fart”, maybe I should pick something not so crude🤣😂🤣. I have been taking pictures and videos up to this point. I have also been gathering information from your videos and others of what I would like to do in a refit and modifications. Presently I am ordering up a metal building for my “Boat Works”…..we get pretty wet winters here in the Northern California Sierras. Thank you again for your inspiration, information and response. Art

Amazing video, David! So many great memories... it's been a privilege to be a small part of your story. Already missing sailing with Tramontana, the saltiest looking M17 of all.
@@1966dc Thanks Larry, it was fun making the video and thinking about all of the adventures we have shared together. I’m very fortunate to have cruising friends like all of you. Looking forward to the next nine years. I’ll see you on the water!
The Pacific Northwest is a wonderful area to cruise and you have shown us just how wonderful it is. In Tramontana you made lifelong memories with great experiences and friends. I truly hope your journeys in Corazon are just as memorable.
@@chrisstockman904 Hi Chris, I’m so fortunate to live in such a wonderful place and have the time to enjoy what it has to offer. It’s great having a group of friends to share some of my journeys. Final Season?
@@kevbjork1 Hi Kev, thanks for watching my video and asking the question. Its the last season I’ll cruise on Tramontana. I have Corazon now and will continue cruising the Pacfic Northwest on her and my videos will be Corazon Chronicles.
I use the small cast iron skillet directly for my corn bread. It spreads the heat from my single burner coleman and it is the pan for the bread at the same time. Seems to work if the heat is kept off the high setting.
@@liamstone3437 Good morning Liam, thanks watching my video and sharing your information about using cast iron. I use cast iron at home to bake in. Now on Corazon I’m experimenting with a folding camp oven. My next trip I’m making pizza from scratch!
Thanks so much, David, for creating these incredibly informative videos. I ended up watching the entire series over the weekend! Big congratulations on your new Flicka - it’s definitely going to make winter cruising possible for you. I’m really impressed with all the updates you’ve made to Tramontana over the years, and the thought process behind each modification. If you ever consider selling her, then please keep me in mind. I started sailing in San Francisco, trained at Club Nautique, and was fortunate to charter sailboats around the world before the kids came along. Now that they’re at the right age, I’d love to introduce them to sailing, and I think an M17 would be perfect for us. Please keep the Flicka videos coming - it’s such a great, sturdy little cruiser, and I’m excited to see what you do with it and where it takes you!
Hi Paul, thank you for watching all my videos and writing the great comment. Montgomery 17 sailboats are very capable and safe boats that would be perfect for your family to learn sailing on. I will eventually sell Tramontana but I need to repair the keel.
@@davidyoung5321 - please keep me posted when you sell - thank you!

Cool vid, I have heard people have soloed across oceans in those Flickas . It’s neat to see the areas I cross crossed often in my 12 foot Sorensen with my trusty 15 hp Evinrude , 30 some years ago. Bainbridge has more money on it than many other areas , no surprise the marina is the nicest . I worked on Bainbridge 40 years ago, very familiar with the island. I liked it better back in the late 70s/ early 80s….. but progress is progress
@@MetalTeamster Good morning MT, Flickas are incredible little sailboats that have cruised the world. Corazon was previously named Kawabunga and in 1995 did a South Sea Adventure. She departed San Diego bound for the Marquesas and Society Islands then cruise up to Hawaii and back to Los Angles. She’ll only see the PNW with me. Bainbridge is a beautiful island but I miss living on Orcas Island. Thanks for watching my video and taking the time to leave a comment.
@@davidyoung5321 that is remarkable, I wish you the best going forward. I like watching the Sam Holmes , the Wave Rover guy ......sailing vids in general
Very cool!!
Thanks Eric!
Nice tour😊. Maybe some reefing (@5:37 timeline), but can be fun to see those rails dipping under - just briefly anyway.😂
Good morning Christopher, thanks for watching my video and leaving a comment. I’m usually reef early in my Montgomery 17 but Corazon is new to me so I decided to see how she felt with her rail in the water. No surprise she sailed great! I’ll go back to reefing early it’s a lot easier on everything.
She's a real little ship David, I wish you many happy adventures aboard Corazon.
Thanks Chris
Nice vid, David. Looks like you and Randy had a great cruise. I'll be heading for the islands tomorrow. Hopefully we can meet up at some point.
It was different traveling on Corazon with someone else on board, but it was very enjoyable having Randy joining me. I only have a week before company comes to our home so I decided to stay local instead of heading north. I guess we won’t see each other on the water this season. You and Sean have a great trip.
Another wonderful video. I enjoy seeing Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island, and other spots around the PNW from your perspective aboard Corazon. Keep the videos coming!
Hi JD, thanks for continuing to watch my channel. I have a few more trips planned so the videos will keep on coming.
So happy watching this…..I’ve had ( been blessed ) by owning 2 pacific sea craft yachts…. A Mariah and my fav a Dana 24….. loved your video.
@@leonrinehart7948 Good morning Leonine, PCS built incredible sailboats. I so happy that I finally own one! I’m looking forward to many adventures on Corezon in the PNW. Thanks for tuning into my channel.
Bruce Bingham got it right when he designed the Flicka!..I cruised singlehanded in a homebuilt Flicka in the Western Pacific for 6 years 1976 to 1982. Fabulous time of my life.
@@mikeallen585 Good morning Mike, that’s a fantastic way to spend six years. I’m looking forward to many extended cruises in the PNW on Corazon’s.
Wow! Enough of the somber euthanasia suicide piano music! Jeeeeeeesus. Too introspective and depressing sounding. Repetitive too.
@@trad9178 WOW! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Actually I’m trying to pick better music for my new videos. Thanks for the input.
You did a bunch or nice things , but those doors are sweet man . nice job .
Hi diceman, thanks it’s been fun modifying Tramontana. I was really happy with the completed doors, they’re way nicer than the hatch boards.
Wow... full keel what a cute little boat!
@@leecowell8165 Hi Lee, Corazon isn’t only cute it’s unbelievable how beautifully she sails, plus I’m really enjoying the comfort down below in the cabin. After cruising for nine seasons in a 17’ sailboat it’s a treat moving up into the Pacific Seacraft World!
6 knots is fast in that small a boat !
I love when the conditions line up and you can go 6+ knots. The fastest I recorded on Tramontana was 9.2 knots. I had a strong wind on my stern and a really fast current going my way. That was exciting!
after the light displacement trailer boat... the heavily balasted round bilge full keel Flicka must feel like an aircraft carrier. I was lucky to learn single handing in a 17 foot teak lady with similar charactoristics. When you know you have a boat that will just take a bone in her teeth and stand up to anything... life is good. wet maybe but the motion is good.
Hi Captain Larry, I’m amazed how comfortable Corazon is while sailing in strong winds. In Tramontana I had a grand time with strong winds but it was always a workout. I absolutely love the way Corazon handles the waves for a pleasant sail.
Well put together. Looking forward to the next!
Hi Jack, It’s been fun putting my trips together and sharing them with others. Thanks for watching my videos.
David, great to see you back out there in the new boat. Looks like a fun meet-up.
Hi Chris, it’s great returning to the cruising life. My last day of work is August 3rd so I’m making plans for a few trips on Corazon. They will last around 5 to 6 weeks.
Great, a new chapter and a new boat. The bigger boat will be needed for some long cruises. All the best.
What a great video.
Thanks Randy, it was a great trip. Thanks for adding to my journey. It was awesome having you aboard.
That looks like a lot of fun. Bet it was a great time seeing all the other Flicka's and Dana's together.
Hi Larry, it was fun going on the other sailboats and checking them out. They were all different in their own way.
Very cool meet up. Besides the Flicka's I am also a big fan of the Dana's. So many 100 degree days down here that area sure looks refreshing!
Hi Jim, it was a fun gathering. Really nice people and lots of fun checking out the differences in each sailboat. Dana’s are impressive for a small sailboat.
Very nice looking boat
Thanks for watching my video Leif
Hi David, I love your video, I really do.. One of the best sail boat videos I have ever seen. A well balanced embodiment of simplicity and aesthetics.. Beautiful music, soothing images.. And the sparsely emerging voice of the narrator (yours I assume) compliments the story perfectly. Amazing really. Congratulations & best wishes from the Aegean Sea.. 👋

Hi Christopher, enjoy your Flicka! I’m having a fun time refinishing Corazon. Hoping to have her looking Bristol by the end of summer.
Couple things this video makes me think about. One, I probably need to tighten up my standing rigging. In that stiff of a breeze my leeward shrouds would be flopping around wildly. Yours hardly move. Two, embarrassingly, if I took that much water over the rail a lot of stuff on the shelf above the settee would be wet. Great sailing! Can’t wait to see the rest of your trip.
Hi loosely, thanks for watching my channel. Corazon sure is a stable, dry sailboat. I’m stocked that I found her and that she’s everything I thought a Flicka would be.

Hi Sunlovers, thanks, Crealock 37’s are beautiful sailboats. Do you cruise in the PNW?
@@davidyoung5321 Thank you David. She’s partially owner fit out as a lot of these first 15 were so the joinery isn’t awesome above the hull/deck joint, but she’s still a great boat! We haven’t cruised the PNW yet, we might still, but it would be way down line.
