Amazing Budget Cycling Computer Alternatives to Garmin
I test and review two amazing budget cycling computer alternatives. Bike computers from the big brands are expensive. You could easily spend anywhere from $200 to $800 for one from Garmin, Wahoo, and Hammerhead. The Coospo CS300 and the iGPSPORT BSC300 make a strong argument to save you some money on a cycling head unit. See what I think of these two budget cycling computers.

    I'm a pump and spare tube man,. In my younger days I had a stint enjoying N2O recreationally from coffeee crema dispensesr (into a balloon). They use the same Cartrdges CO2 users use on bike. Seeing those N2O empties build up weighed heavy on me, so when CO2 became common on bike I haven't been tempted. Riding my bike in nature should be avoiding needless waste. And I see them as needless as I don't compete and pump works. Seeing these electronic pumps get this small is something I could swing to, especially as you say they add a gauge. Still will carry my pump and spare tube though. I've seated my 2.4 tyres and a difficult rim with just a handpump and cargo strap, so their always a way with out fast pressure.

      A pump and tube are definite necessities. I bring the electric mini pump in addition. But it is what I reach for first every time. The hand pump is just in case.

    Well done, and thanks for bringing some much-deserved attention to an under appreciated bike. I bought the XT build about 5 months ago and can’t say enough good about it. I won’t bother repeating all the praises you give it, but I will differ with you on your one major criticism; that the fork will only accommodate up to a 2.4” tire. I’ve found the Fox Stepcast 34 to be absolutely appropriate for this bike, at least for my area (south central Indiana-very hilly, varying surface from slag to big exposed roots to sand to grippy loam). I’ve ridden 2.1’s, 2.25’s, 2.35’s and 2.4’s on the DV9 and have settled on 2.35 as the sweet spot. I have 2.5’s and 2.6’s on other more aggressive bikes but I think they would rob the DV9 of some of the quickness that is such an attractive and essential part of its nature. The relatively light weight of this fork is also spot on for matching the light frame. My only quibble is that my bike came with Rekon Race 2.4 tires, which were just about useless on anything other than a groomed flow trail on a dry day, which comprises about 1% of my riding. After experimenting with various brands,treads, and widths, I went to the Schwalbe Racing Ray F/Racing Ralph R 2.35 combo and have been really impressed. They’re very grippy, faster than most in their class, and remarkably quiet.

    • @TroyOnTrails
      @TroyOnTrails 4 дні тому

      Indeed smaller tires accent it's speed and agility. My complaint is they spec Ed the bike to allow a bigger rear tire. If anything, the front should be bigger. I've been running very aggressive Panaracer Romero 2.4 tires and love that I can get more rowdy. But the playfulness does take a hit.

      @TroyOnTrails 4 дні тому

      I bought it with the intent of using it for bikepacking. I was planning to ride the Washington High-Lite route this week with it, but my back had other ideas. So I haven't had a chance to truly try it out loaded yet. I've just done a few short loaded rides. I love it. My biggest gripe is there is very little room inside the triangle (even on an XL). This means I can't have much of a half frame bag and still keep water bottles. Thus far I think I'll skip adding a frame bag as it seems it will be too small to provide real value.

    Rouvy is fine with good tracks. But many tracks are recorded with cars. If you climb, the fps of the video drops. because it was recorded with a much higher speed. Cars, other bikes and persons on the road moving unnaturally slow. The immersion also breaks if the angle is wrong and you see the shadow of the car.

    Thanks for this comparison. Very well done. I've been curious about these pumps but not ready to pull the trigger yet. Seems like they might be just the thing for topping up tubeless tires while on a multiday trip. Just a note on your rankings: The fact that the larger pump "won" so many categories even though you don't use it while riding tells me that you need to "weight" your categories. They aren't all equally important!

Bryton fixed the last fuckup update so the bikecomputer is useable again and I keep it as backup to the better but significant more expensive iGSPort 630S. But that unit offers a real navigation instead of the bread crumb navigation where you have to load a route via the Bryton App onto the bikecomputer. there is no map just a black line and information when to change direction in i.e. 287 meters. The 420 is a great inexpensive Bikecomputer which will give you more data than a normal roadie will ever need with very good battery life, 25 hours with no problem, light, small, bw display, easy to connect with sensor for HR, Cad and Speed. 2 bike profils, sync with strava or komoot not problem too.

One thing I found is that the (unused) battery on the AS2 Pro holds it charge much longer than the Fumpa. With the Fumpa Mini, I had to charge it every three weeks, with the AS2 Pro, I checked the battery level one a month and it was still full. Curious if you were finding anything different on the pumps ability to hold a (unused) charge?. I'd like to avoid the videos of such people. If you don't mind, good for you. [You're a gullible fool, but that's your business.] Can I assume that YOU have no idea what gravel is?

    One doesn’t need ride ons in ROUVY because there’s usually no one else around. Riding in ROUVY is a lonely experience….if one likes that. The avatar looks and moves unnaturally and appears pasted on a real world background. If one wants great scenery, 4K FulGaz easily wins, hand down.

    After the Zwift HUD update with even more clutter on the screen I just changed to Rouvy. Way more landscape on the screen, HUD items are well placed and can be customized. Really great, I enjoyed the first two rides! Video quality could sometimes be better with some annoying distortion at the side of the screen but overall the experience is better if you just want to do some km per week to stay fit and not to be bothered.

      I usually leave it at a hotel if I'm returning to where I started the tour. But many of my trips are point to point so I use a cardboard box that I get from a bike shop. Then when I finish the trip, I find another box for the trip home.

    I was one of the 'GoFundMe' early buyers back when this was an independent product from Australia, before Quarq/SRAM bought it. I've been using my two units since.... 2016? Earlier? One has a steady battery drain on it, so I will probably replace it, but I've arguably got about 700 hours on them since 2019 when I resumed mtb almost exclusively. Here's what I've noticed: 1) Be precise with trail, tire, and temperature. Let the bike sit in the sun for a bit to reach ambient temperature. 2) ALWAYS check your tire pressure and stay consistent with it, only making changes if you hit a ceiling on ShockWiz Scores. 3) Don't use Lockout at all. It skews the readings. You can always go with lockout or semi-lockout after you've gotten consistency in the numbers. 4) You'll rarely get the same score twice. I have a course out here in Northern Nevada, right outside my front door, with super consistent weather and trail conditions. I get about a 10-15 point spread both front and rear. You have to look for the trend over time. Heck, I'll do two or three laps of the course, will save and reset the ShockWiz readings each lap, and the delta is, again, 10-15 points. Now.... it HAS helped my descending skills and speed. I don't know how much of that is just experience and skill development, and how much is the suspension, but I'm pretty sure I'm soaking up a lot of the exposed rock, and getting some faster corners than I used to. The mountain doesn't destroy me like it used to. One final thing; and this is pure anecdote; I don't think a Fox 120 F/R racing suspension setup (34 up front, Float race tune in rear) offers enough fine tuning of compression and rebound per the ShockWiz recommendations, so I'm PROBABLY going to replace the rear with a Cane Creek Air IL at some point. ALL of this data, btw, has been going up to SRAM's servers, and all of us have been giving that info to SRAM/RockShox, where they've developed and tuned the Flight Attendant, which really, really, really works. I've had 3 clients buy them and they consistently reveal faster times, lower heart rate, and faster watt-splits on different segments. Fox is wayyyyyy behind on this, and may never compete. I think the ShockWiz is an interesting tool, but you're right - the app could be improved to lead with questions about setup before departure (clicks for compression, rebound, tire pressure) instead of after-the-fact, and then look at empirical ride information along with GPS (it's on the phone or via Connect/RWGPS/Strava/whatever), to give better advice. Don't give up on it. Use it for a season and see what the recommendations are after 25 rides where you don't touch it. That may be the trick - subtle changes once ever 12-20 rides, then perception over time.

      Getting out of the city was a bit challenging in places. The Empire State Trail to Albany was well marked. Not well North of Albany. And the Croton Aquaduct (optional detour) is pretty hard to follow. I used a GPS for navigation.
