    Really thorough tutorial! As someone who's never done 3d printing, but has done some CAD work in the past, I'm trying to figure would it be worth printing my own gears & front caps, or just buy from someone. How long does printing one gear take on an Ender-3? What would you estimate the weight or amount of filament would be per average gear (around the size in your video). Thank you!

    • @KylerWilton
      @KylerWilton 2 роки тому

      Thank You! Printing one gear at about 30% infill takes me about 6 or so hours and about 30 grams of filament that cost however varies depending on what infil percentage you set it to as well as how thick you make your gears. Ultimaker Cura includes an estimate for the grams of filament it will take as well as the time required to print so if you have the time and a printer id suggest printing your own gears so you can fine tune them and avoid the headache of having to shim one.

    The only problems I have with it are that the render is crisper than the footage and there's no motion blur. I'd add a very slight blur to the head after the fact in compositing to make it match the footage better. I'd also apply some fake motion blur to the whole thing because it all happens so fast and it doesn't leave any motion trails on the footage. Those two things, in my opinion, would make it look realistic and they're mostly to do with compositing so you don't have to go back and change anything in blender. I love the end result but those two things could really boost the realism if you feel like trying them. Edit: I noticed the sort of zoom blur you have on impact and I think it kind of achieves what I said. I would go one step further and use a motion blur affect within the footage that leaves motion trails. I found that in Hitfilm but I don't know what video editor you're using.

    • @KylerWilton
      @KylerWilton 2 роки тому

      Thanks for the feedback! I definitely agree that it needs some motion blur added in the editor, I used DaVinci resolve and some of the built in effects but I'm sure there's more that could be done in the compositor inside of blender! I ended up just using the built in ones because the scene was so short, if the shot were more than half a second it would definitely need more motion blur!

    • @battleframestudios8989
      @battleframestudios8989 2 роки тому

      @@KylerWilton I mentioned hitfilm because they have an effect that adds fake motion blur to footage. You wouldn't even need do it in blender. Just find the motion blur effect in your editor of choice. I've never used Da Vinci Resolve but I'm sure they have something similar. Overall this is some pretty top notch stuff for something made with free tools. Awesome job!

    Good work Dylan and Kyler. For some constructive criticism: 1. Student films always have substandard audio, yours is decent, but it's pretty easy to distinguish post audio from set audio. Proper mixing is important, but a lot of it comes down to equipment, so I understand if that's a limitation. 2. I think your pacing drags significantly while he's in the room with two doors. You could very easily have shaved off a good 4 minutes and had a stronger piece. (that's always hard to do when you filmed it and want to keep it all). 3. The color grading was pushing from "stylistic grunge" into full on "Piss Filter". You can say it's supposed to be jarring, to mimic the characters emotional state but... You still want the film to look good. Make sure to get proper 3 point lighting coverage and white balance to start at a healthy baseline for CC. Overall great progress for a student film! I've seen... So many... And this is better than most 😎👍 You're editing is interesting as long as you don't use it as a crutch on future projects, and I liked the actors work as well! Good luck on future stuff!

      Thanks so much for the constructive feedback! I find your sentiments to ring true, and I really appreciate it. We knew going into production that most of the audio would have to be done in post and it turned out to be one of the most difficult pieces of the puzzle. Going forward I’m going to put more emphasis on getting sound design more proper and lifelike. I definitely agree with you on the pacing, and how you pointed out that we should make sure not to use editing as a crutch. I was always primarily an editor, so its been very alluring for me to just say “we’ll fix it in post”, but it’s definitely more nerve-wracking and time consuming than necessary. It helps, but it never quite fully makes up for insufficiencies in other areas. I’m glad you put this into words for me.
