Photography is a passion and I love creating vlogs of my photo hikes and journeys both in my home on the Norfolk Broads and further afield.
Take a look at my Norfolk Broads photo vlogs here: ua-cam.com/play/PLxn5w9x-lcs87gJCfEzADmLGBFwUKbof4.html
I also love the Yorkshire Dales and have a series of landscape vlogs: ua-cam.com/play/PLxn5w9x-lcs_E1vovvkOMAm3baIl6ufI5.html
I also do photo gear and tech hints and tips along with How-to. I particularly like the DJI Pocket: ua-cam.com/play/PLxn5w9x-lcs926KyS03hGApIibbL2O6_O.html
I am a now full-time photographer and film-maker. My previous work included journalism (computers and photography), web development, holiday rental homes & running a holiday hire boat yard on the Norfolk Broads which I closed during the pandemic.

Photography for Mental Health - A day in the woodland will do you good
I just needed to get out and I went to the woods for a day of photography. The weather was far from perfect but being mostly alone in these fabulous places with all the sights and smells of nature is so calming. I needed calm.
I had no expectation of getting any great shots - I wasn't out for great shots. Just passable ones were all I needed which is just as well...
My mental health is fragile these days. Family trouble has caused huge difficulties and I am often VERY low. I use photography to help me get though the week (or the day) and my UA-cam channel gives me the reason to go out because I have committed to the schedule of making at least one video a week. I thank everyone who's watching and reading for their time and support.

Macro Tripod Hack - NOBODY talks about this Tripod & Camera problem
Переглядів 4,9 тис.День тому
With many tripods having invertible centre columns, the flexibility to steady our cameras almost anywhere has been a given for some time now. But what nobody talks about is the sheer difficulty of using your camera when it's been inverted. Almost every control is now in a different place and that's a bit of a mind for lots of us. Well, I have a macro tripod hack for this and it's simple and ver...

Improve your photography with Previsualisation - you'll be glad you did

Being able to previsualise an image before you have operated the shutter is an important part of photography. The phrase has always existed, but it was popularised by Ansel Adams who made many famous images of his native American landscapes by imagining what he wanted the final photograph to look like. Famously, Adams was an exponent of darkroom techniques to manipulate an image to make it look...

During an early morning photowalk along a beach I visited about a year ago, I hoped I might be able to improve upon a favourite 2023 image from a similar walk. I have one of those L brackets amongst my stuff and had no idea how to use it. This is very helpful.
just wonderful photos and advice.
At minute 7:00 I like the closer one more. Beside that I find the vast majority of your images I saw in several videos great and very inspiring. Keep going bro!
I agree trying to use a camera inverted is nigh on impossible . I bought a tripod collar for my 100mm macro and hang that from the tripod.
Well andy, came across your channel the other day totally by accident and watched a couple of your recent ones...today I popped back and noticed youve done bloody loads....so here I am working through your old stuffand thoroughly enjoying em.....youre easy to listen to, no extra bull s**t, and its like being out there with you....much appreciated and hopefully by the time I get to your recent stuff therell be loads more...all the best 👍
Thank you so much.
I’ve often wondered if I’d bump into you when I’m out and about and now you’re in our local woods I’m sure it’s only a matter of time. I’m not one for introducing myself to strangers but I have so much respect for your work that I always thought I’d pluck up the courage to do so. But maybe you’d rather I just left you alone…..?
I know the feeling. Say hi and definitely don't rely in me to as anxiety makes me ignore more people than I would ever speak to. Better still, happy to go out on a fotoforage with you.
@ thank you so much. I’m in a bit of a dead spot with my photography at the moment but once I get my mojo back I may well be up for that. In the meantime, I’ll certainly say hello if I spot you.
Very relatable video. The main reason to get out with my camera is for the exercise and mental health benefits. The photography is a bonus, and the motivation. It's a little like owning a dog I suppose, but poo bags aren't required.
Thank you. A yoga video for photographers ! Nice calm and nice photos ! Mushroom photography is tough on the knees 😩 !
Very clever, Andrew. Good stuff. 👍
that image with the cows and mill is stunning. Bird call sounds like a Lapwing...
The beautiful four leaf plant is a Yellow Archangel.
hahaha brilliant
Some nice mushrooms. Yum, yum! To be seasoned with that bright green leaf. Brilliant! However, I do think the spider is a bit too skinny to complete the dish. A nice fat slug would have been more nutritious. Nevertheless, quite a good day's catch. Bon appetit! By the way, the fallen over red'uns are rather unhealthy and cause hallucinations - that is, if you actually live to enjoy them.
For me, Simon, it's that time of the year again when I would gladly eat them.
@@AndyBanner Oh dear!
More on that next week...
@@AndyBanner The semi-macro photos I mentioned all came out very well indeed. I really did like your spider. It was not your best "woodscape" day but as you said, taking the photo is the actual fun. Woods are difficult anyway. A single tree - OK. A nicely lighted path - OK. A stream - OK. But anything scapy with lots of leaves and branches - and no mist - tends to turn into one big clutter. What looks quite nice in 3D, more often or not, does not hold its promise in 2D. What I have found out is that a very slow 360 degree video pan looks very impressive.
I notice that you often frame your photos for display which I think looks great. I have seen that many photographic sites don't like this so I wonder what your opinion is? Lovely photos by the way. Thanks
I so rarely upload to any photographic sites, so I am afraid I have no opinion to offer. To me, a photograph is an artwork that has a boundary and the existence of a frame helps focus the attention on the art that is being shown. It's different in real life where a frameless frame such as a clip frame can be used to good effect often because the 3D nature of the art helps separate it from the wall that it might hang on, but on a screen, making it stand out is even more important to me.
@@AndyBanner makes sense. Many thanks
Thank you very, very much for your comments and teaching. I must admit your ways of viewing surrounding environment is absolutely wonderful. Kind regards from Poland.
So nice of you, thank you.
This was a very calming video to watch, Andrew. Thank you. Indeed, it reminded me to look carefully. There is so much to see that we can walk past and not see!
You're very welcome
Tripod challenge 2: wind blowing kit over or causing vibration. Blowing over is easily prevented by hanging heavy weight under tripod, or if that starts to swing, a tent line to tent pin with tightened line. Vibration from wind is difficult to solve. Some big expensive tripods are more prone to it than others. If not between camera and subject, consider a wind screen. Or use your body to create a lee around camera/tripod Or make an igloo from a translucnent huge parabolic umbrella for macro - may be with 2 holes ti stick your arms through.
Tripod challenge 1: levelling. Pro solution has levelling thing like half-bowl. But isuue with lightweight traveller tripod. I have Manfrotto magnesium ballhead (very lightweight big ball) and replaced Manfrotto proprietary quick-release (QR) by pano-rotating Arca compatible QR from Sunwayfoto (cheap, good).
I enjoy our entertaining and informative videos.
Glad you like them. Thank you.
Great idea, you are right, turning the camera upside down is disconcerting! I'm not a video person, but this is a really good use for a 'Cage' that those video types use..
For sure, if you have a cage, it's a better option than what I suggest here.
Top Drawer .....
Cheers, Colin
So sorry for the family troubles. That can hurt. I’m glad you have photography. I love your videos and have gotten so much inspiration from viewing them and your final photographs. Turn to your video family when you need support. We care.
It's a constant drain on my lifeforce, Willie. I appreciate your sentiment - Of course, there's a difference between you and my viewers and those I know and love. That is that I don't know any of you personally (maybe one or two) but because you watch me occasionally and I share things about myself, you feel you know me. It's a strange relationship that I find very hard to get my head around.
Don’t get brainwashed by the media hype so called news. They show the public what they want to influence behaviour. E.g. storm today and continued forecasts saying it’s 50mph wind here; and all it’s been all day is drizzle and a delightful wa😢breeze. And wars. Don’t forget it’s always called the ‘theatre of war’. I know what that says to me. Shakespeare said ‘all the world is a stage etc’. Need I say more? Don’t worry. Just shoot 📸👍
I haven't watched much news for over a year now. There's rarely anything good reported and me knowing about certain things isn't good for my wellbeing. But things filter through, certain times of year are very difficult to navigate both mentally and financially and sometimes I don't cope well.
Another informative and entertaining video. It’s great to see the RAW and post processed together compare. I’m glad it’s not just me that gets aches in my knees!
My lower-leg problem makes mushroom macro very difficult, for sure. The season is mostly over now. Woodlands barely have any mushrooms left, but I still have a couple of videos due for upload! Thanks for your support.
I quite like that first image. your processing has really made a difference, and the image is saying "come into the woods" 🙂 not a great deal wrong with the image at 14:20 either. again it invites you in to see what's there in the undergrowth / background I've been stuck indoors for the past week with bone pain and a host of other issues, so it was nice to come along with you your stroll 🙂
So sorry to read you're stuck inside, Nick. Weather over this side of the country isn't making me want to leave the house, so if you've got it too, you're not missing a lot even if you are sick of seeing the same four walls. I really forced that first image. I knew what I saw and wanted, but it took a lot of getting. The one at 14:20 is just an unrecoverable mess as far as I am concerned. It looked good in person and even framed in the selfie camera that I commented on (but failed to qualify in the video), but the light was simply awful and the shot, again, was forced only because of the video, else I would have just passed it by. If me getting out with the camera helps you a little, I am pleased with that. We all need something to brighten our days. Take care of yourself.
I love getting out, and about, especially in the woods, it's a form of escapism from this crazy world we live in.
Indeed. It's completely bonkers. Well, actually, it's corrupt and full of lies that people find easy to believe because they have become hard of thinking, but let's not go there.
Thank you Andrew. I enjoy your calmness and ability to teach quietly.
I appreciate that. Thanks
so calming watching this. Thank you
You're welcome 😊
best photography channel on youtube. Many thanks for your skill, dedication and time
Wow, thanks! Tell your friends! :--)
Our photography and philosophy are so similar. I enjoy your talks and photos. ❤
Thank you, Julie.
The mushroom photo at 9:40 got incredible! It is worth the technical installation! The dead-nettle leaf got superb too, very original point of view. I understand what you say about the "messy woodland" photo at 14:00 but it is still very colourful and with much details for nature-lovers and would be perfect as a big print on a wall. Indeed, it is exactly as you say, going out to take photos is a great thing to do for the mind (+body when not too much gear) and it is indeed somtimes difficult to get good photographs. But still, your photos at the end are also gorgeous!
Thank you so much. Your support is very much appreciated. I think you're wrong about the print part :-)
@@AndyBanner we'll never know for the print part then ;-) But still I love it!
Nice image Andrew.
Thank you
For the first photo, I find it really interesting because the post-processed photo really looks like what we seen in the video, with the light on the left of the image. In essence, you reveal what you saw and what we witnessed on the video but wasn't easily visible in the RAW file. I find this totally acceptable and even welcomed! Light in forest is such a difficult thing anyway...
The raw, naturally flat, is very disappointing considering the light, but of course, I underexposed to protect the highlights on the tree trunks which helped degrade the image to a degree as there's always more noise in shadows, but the processing made the image look pretty-much like I envisioned and described, but it took a lot of work and a good few iterations to get there. It wasn't a great image to start with and I almost certainly would not have worked on it had it not been for the video. Good practice anyway.
@@AndyBanner thank you for all those elements that I overlooked. And indeed, lots of work. The post-processing part can be a bit of a burden, and I admire your perseverance, we are lucky in this case that you took the time! Indeed, good practice, as it really adds to a photographers' panoply.
Andrew, your ideas inspired me to come up with a solution using extra pieces of gear I have. Thank you for the inspiration.
Excellent.
Great video. Thanks. I use a tripod with the centre section that can be inverted. I have problems with my back and knees, so bending or getting up from kneeling are painful options. I bought a remote release, about £23 on Amazon, which can be used for video or stills. I too have MFT, in my case Panasonic, mainly for limiting weight now I'm in my dotage, and it comes with wifi. I have an old mobile and used to use that, but the remote does it all, and without connection delays. I have a mini tripod which can splay its legs, something I am unable to do nowadays. That gets the camera low, and it's great for flower/fungi images. I might try to bastardise my cage, and see how it goes. Thanks again.
The major advantage of the bracket is that underslinging the camera means that you can get VERY low and still have stability which you can't do with a mini tripod of any size. I am well aware of lower leg pain....
fantastic photographs
Thanks
You found a great topic to talk about. Photography isn't always about the pictures and techniques, but the thought and creativity you have to put in to get a great result. While you were explaining a phrase of a latin writer Virgil came to my mind; "You have to change your mind(set), not your horizon." Just as you say: open yourself up and dare to see around the neighbourhood, so much to see that we take for granted sometimes.
That's the problem - it's mindset. It's always mindset. I guarantee that if someone who said their area was boring had me walk it with them, I would open their eyes as to how wrong they were.
Thanks!
So very kind, Bruce. Thank you.
You got the 👁 ! You have cameras in your eyes or your camera is your eyes... 🤔 Thank you !
It's all just practice... :-)
Wow
Why that person had to walk through at the same time as the boat... they should have taken turns... you could fill a wall with that one shot with a different element passing through the centre of each image. Any chance of a sunrise or set? A wheelchair? Puffins?
I have one with a mobility scooter...
I tried this and ended up loosing the big nut in the dark, had to buy a new tripod!
Oh dear. Some of my gear has captive fixings to stop them coming out. But things work loose over time, fact of life. Always worth checking things occasionally.
For the cost of the various arca swiss fittings and brackets, isn't it easier to simply go with a NiSi Wizard Camera Positioning Bracket? (I do like the idea of using the inverted geared tripod head though).
Not at all. The Nisi bracket is an interpretation of the Atoll from Silence Corner and various other copies have appeared too. The problem with these is bulk, handling and the fact that none of them work well or at all with Olympus/OM bodies. They are expensive too. Probably double the price of the fittings needed for the U bracket I show. A lot of people will already have some of the parts needed also - at least one commenter here just went to his basement for the bits.
Kia Ora, I thought the image of the woman passing in about the same spot as the cyclist was a better picture, thanks
The whole scene is about simplicity - having two elements of interest introduces confusion removing the impact. Also, I had no control over the timing, so luck played a bit part in spacing.
You could use your phone if your camera has wi-fi. If you do not have this use a use a wired or wireless remote.
Frankly, anyone doing macro as I do without a wired remote needs a lot of luck on their side anyway, but a wireless connection whether WiFi or cable is a small part of the issue. My camera has WiFi but I don't have total access to the settings through it. I can't focus stack for instance and that makes macro over WiFi quite pointless for me at least. Different solutions meet different demands but I have been experiencing challenges and experimenting with solutions for a couple of years. This is definitely the best thing I have come up with.
An unexpected surprise. Great result.
Previsualisation, Peter! :-)
For awkward camera positions, I use a remote shutter release. I’ve also used the remote control app on me cellphone. For low to the ground macros, I have a couple low tripods to choose from, or use a “bean bag” to get really low, and a remote. I do not use a tripod with a center column.
Unless you undersling the camera, every solution pulls the camera off the ground as you have to place something with height under it. Bean bags aren't very good because they move too readily when operating the camera. The remote app on my phone does not give access to the menus and advanced controls, so no focus stacking. With this bracket (and an inverted centre column) you don't get low to the ground, you get ON the ground yet with a stable positioning system for repeatable shutter actions. The key need though is an inverted centre column to make this usable
