We all wanted tiny cars, right? I mean gas sucked but manufacturers would turn cars into tiny disposable appliances... and never really look back... Muscle would be dead for decades...

1968 Chevy Dealer Film: Chevy TOPS the TOP TWO!

A great year for automobiles... Car makers were really hitting stride with design and function. Chevy makes its case for the full size Chevy VS Ford/Plymouth. This is a VERY tough call... :) which would you pick?
1972 Camaro and Chevelle VS Mustang and Torino! Muscle cars era coming to an end...
Переглядів 3 тис.Місяць тому
The end is nigh... You could tell the management knew the age of muscle was over already... But Pontiac would really push in 1973 to save the Muscle cars, but the engineering teams and management had already destined the muscle car to the graveyard for a LONG time... Emissions would get them... gas prices rising... Those high back seats did suck and I did hate those door unlocks way behind you ...

Did Ford make the most generic car in history? the 1968 Ford falcon
Переглядів 9 тис.Місяць тому
These slides were a bit over exposed... but it seems like Ford just knew they were killing this off... And was obviously overshadowed by the Mustang... They made this the most generic car and shipped it. If you look up "Automobile" in the dictionary I think it shows the 68 Ford Falcon...
1958 Plymouth VERSUS Edsel... Shoot out!
Переглядів 15 тис.2 місяці тому
The recession and the looks would be a double whammy of death for the Edsel? Was the styling unique? Good bad? Plymouth goes toe to toe against the lower end Edsel... Ford was desperate to compete with a upper range brand as those brands themselves were dying off( Desoto, Olds...)... GM had the money to keep Oldsmobile on for quite some time... Chrysler didn't have those deep pockets...

Galaxie 500 could climb stairs and jump small hills and keep going
After 58 years of careful consideration, I have determined the Malibu wagon with a 283 2 barrel, 4 speed manual and posi-traction will be my choice. Naturally, the most heavy-duty suspension available will be added to the chosen powertrain. 🤩
The Ford LTD had the best ride comfort and the best trunk layout (Mercury Marquis and Lincoln also excelled for the same reasons). Body construction was better on the Ford with Chevrolet having the slam it hard doors. Also, the LTD Brougham was more plush inside than the Caprice. The Chevrolet only excelled with their drivetrain. 😮
Plymouth, has electronic ignition, not offered on Ford or Chevy.
400 was std. engine in California.
Bel Air, was offered as a two hardtop in Canada.
Not gonna lie but the Plymouth front end looks bad ass.
Chevy's Colls Springs offer a smooth ride in all conditions.......but it can't compare to the road handling and performance of the Plymouth's Torsion Bars and Rear Leaf Springs......they ignore it totally......it's why the Plymouths were sold in high numbers for Police Cars. The Chevy Wagon was better than the Country Squire in many ways, so much so, this film focuses only on that comparison. The Plymouth Wagon was pretty darn good and compared very well to the Chevy Wagon in most statistics.....so it's ignored here.
I love these videos!
Thanks... It's a money losing proposition though... I mean to put up some info videos but haven't had the time.
Interesting that they didn’t have much to say about the Plymouth…. Guess Chevy didn’t compare as favorably.
Yeah they would downplay Mopars a lot... Ford was their main competitor though. Chrysler was having a tough time.
These films are fascinating, explaining differences in engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, comfort, etc. nowadays, all people care about is how many cup holders does it have.
These new 1971 GM models had very bad engineered A/C component placement., on the cowl/dash area.
That was one of the worst dealer films I've ever seen. The narration reeked of desperation. Much prefer Chrysler's low key road test films
This was an odd film......it is supposed to tell how great the Chevy is, yet all they talk about is Plymouth.
Plymouth was ALL the rage in 57... Chevy was scared sh*tless.
Saudacoes aqui do Brasil aqui tivemos Ford Galaxie e Dodge Dart
1972 to me was the last truly good year of the classic car era before the Emission Controls and Smog Pumps started plaguing the vehicles along with the 5mph bumper regulations placed on the automotive industry starting with the 1973 models.
a few good stragglers in 73 and then gone in 74-74...
Edsel is much better looking
Ehh.... i don think that was the concensus :)
Funny how these things never mention fuel economy... Or safety ( other than comparative examination of brake pads)
the chevy camp can try to put down ford anyway they can,,but it is ford known as [ the wagon master ] for a reason and owned almost 1/2 the wagon market all to them selves
I will take a Caprice sedan, Kingswood wagon and just to be safe, an Impala coupe. Please install a 400 big block in each one of them. 😉 Just to be extra safe, I will take a LTD sedan with a 429 and a Plymouth Suburban wagon with a 440. 🤩🤩🤩
The big blocks available were 402 and 454 in Chevys. 400 is a small block.
@@ronbrock6153 They were 402 cubic inches but marketed as a 400. We had a 400 small block in our 73 Caprice wagon so I would like to give the big block a try.
@@rightlanehog3151 Yes you are correct, the 400 Turbo Jet was a 402. Which came to be in 1970 when they bored the 396. Funny enough they still called it the 396b in anything other than full size cars and pick ups. I would love to find a clean clam shell wagon, any of them with a 455 or 454. I have never had a big block chevy in a car just boats. My favorite engines I have had 455 Buick, 455 Pontiac, 440 Chrysler, Buick 3800 Supercharged, and my Cadillac 3.6 twin turbo
Why did they not include more about the Plymouth?
Left out all the stuff where Plymouth was better.
@@eugenepiurkowski5439: I wondered if that was the reason
Chrysler was having a tough time... but Ford was the main competition...
Chrysler was actually doing fairly well in the early 1970s, it was in 1976 when they came out with the Aspen/Volare disaster that almost killed the company and required a government bailout to save them
I would take any and ALL of the cars mentioned - love 'em all !
The top trim-level sedans, especially back in '65-6 when the LTD and Caprice names were introduced, show the divisions' place in the real corporate pecking order. The LTD came first because Ford Division was and is Ford Motor Company in a lot of ways, the boss' name wasn't Henry Mercury. Chevrolet was limited in its' innovations upmarket by the need to leave space for Buick-Olds-Pontiac, especially with a lot of "Buick men" in the GM C-suite, but their #1 sales bragging rights were important enough they could match Ford model-for-model. Plymouth couldn't get any traction with the VIP and had to rebrand the top series Gran Sedan because it had few specific advocates either in corporate or at the dealer level where salesmen were encouraged to upsell luxe-Plymouth shoppers to a Chrysler Newport.
When referring to the mid-1960s, the Chevrolet Impala and Impala SS crushed the equivalent Galaxie 500 and XL in sales. So, the LTD (Galaxie 500 LTD in 1965) was introduced to upstage Chevrolet. For several years afterward the LTD sold much better than the Caprice...but the Galaxie never came close in sales to the Impala. Sales of large Plymouths never recovered after the quality problems in 1957. Law enforcement loved the big block large Plymouths but retail sales were never strong.
Thanks for putting out all these dealer training film. I dig 'em.
Knowing what was coming in 1973, I kept wondering about mileage in city driving.
I love love LOVE all three of these. The absolute peak of land yacht sedans, beautiful styling inside and out. I dont think i could choose just one!
You don't know what a land yacht is
eh these were pretty land yachty :) these were the "low priced" brand versions though.
For 1968, Ford Falcon and Rambler American had the US-built compact station wagon market all to themselves.
The independent road tests of the time all showed GM's power steering not able to keep up duing a slalom. That clam shell tailgate on the Chevy wagon is no fun in the rain. My 1972 Ford LTD with it's 351W engine got mid-20s MPG on a trip. The Plymouth may have been able to equal that, but not the Chevy. Interesting that GM often bragged about 4-wheel coil springs, but the wagon required leaf springs.
when that tail gate breaks..... and then leaks...
@@autochronicles8667 Due to the shape of the back of the car, as soon as you open the tailgate window the rain is coming in.
Best breaking system ever had . I used them on I -10 when traffic suddenly came to stop the antilock brakes were crash saving Blue Leather interior never cracked . at 13 miles per gallon on Highway not bad .
Yay another great drop! Good to see how Chevrolet's full size offering compare to the other rivals.
Yeah I'll switch it up next week, I still have some 72 Chevys from this set but need to give Chevy a week off :)
Wouldn’t you really rather have a Chrysler?
Nowadays, the only features new car buyers care about is how many cup holders does it have.
I had a 50 Buick, a 56 Buick, 61 Buick, and a 62 Buick. None of them leaked.
Too bad Chevy saddled the Corvette with that 2 speed PowerGlide. If if had a 3 speed manual on the floor, it would have been sweet, as it would have been nearly as quick as the Jag, without the headaches of the Jag. Would love to have one of these
Such a beautiful car. My dad bought a 1970 sage green caprice just as the restyled 1971s were coming in.
The Desoto has a cleaner and more stylish exterior...I agree that the Mercury front windshield intrudes on ease of entry/exit for the driver - a bit suprising...
Yeah those headlights... blech... Funny JC Whitney had a dual headlight swap kit for that Mercury... it helped a little
I still remember when my dad brought home his 55 Plymouth Savoy. I was 5 years old. Still remember, red car with black trim. It was a 6 cylinder, no radio, no power equipment and the heat was not very good, I was always cold in the winter in that car.
eh old cars you were always cold in the back :) No RADIO? :)
Both cars are ugly.
You can see rust already forming behind the rear seat!
lol CMON :)
20 years goes by like a flash....
I had a 61 dodge in 1974 I been retarded ever sense a crazy man I cry all the time
I love how annoyed he sounds when the Toyota has standard equipment that's also standard the Vega😂
yeah "SURE THEY have power brakes up front also....."
Wow. The little car that was a huge P.O. S. I would have to go with the Super Bettle.
never realized that ford and plymouth for 55 still used the 6 volt electrical system!
Yeah Plymouth was like "it works doesnt it!" :) but would switch quickly..
Had a 70 Maverick. Was just a rebodied 60 Falcon, but was simply way more car than Vega or Pinto. Corolla became a fantastic car.
They conveniently forgot the absolute winner- Datsun 510
Was the 510 in the same class? Here in New Zealand the 510 was called the 1600, and there was a smaller sedan called the 1200, which was the Corolla competitor. 1600/510 would have competed with the Corona. We didn't get Vegas or Pintos, though (Vauxhall Viva and Ford Escort for us) Agree the 510 is a great car though, they were a cut price BMW 2002.
@@WillHainsworth-c2j Yes, price wise in the same class. I wanted one, but they stopped selling them in '73. Bought a new VW Super Beetle instead.
They also forgot the AMC Gremlin.
The pinto had rack and pinion. The vega had bungie cords. Toyota for the win.
I will take Corolla wagon, I would not touch any of the others with a ten foot pole.
I don't think the back seat is the major concern in a Pinto if you're involved in a rear end collision 🤣🤣🤣
They sure were in love with the Vega, easily the worst car in the bunch. Good GM propaganda!
