How I Raised $47,000 for a Short Film
After years of making zero-budget shorts, I am all of a sudden directing the biggest project of my career with a $47,000 budget, a short film called 'Green Grass' about two D/deaf university students. It's a huge challenge, and the $200, $300, $500 budgets of all my previous self-made short films wasn't going to cut it this time, we needed to raise money, and a lot of it. And we did.
This is how we raised $47,000 for our short film, using a mixture of crowdfunding, brand partnerships, film funds, direct sponsors, and some clever thinking. As creatives, we sometimes like to think of art and business as separate things, but the reality is that there is an art to business, and a business in art.
If you want to check out more of the things I mentioned in the video, then here are some links below!

    Very frank and open description of your process. I did in fact pivot with a TV commissioning exec when they expressed little interest for my primary idea and I had 3 or4 in reserve, each that was equally turned passed on. Sadly versions of my backup pitches did materialise from the same channel some time later without any benefit to me. Very much disillusioned me in the system.

      @aramatkinson 5 місяців тому

      @@Bigworld_Productions sorry to hear that happened. Might be worth asking for a freedom of information about it if it wasn't oo long ago. It's surprising though how many times two people pitch the same idea at the same time. I pitched two concepts and the company told me of two productions they had in prep at that point, both of which were incredibly similar in many ways. Such is the way sometimes but also sometimes there's some valid questions needing to be asked if it feels like your exact IP.

    I read Tarkovsky go on beautifully about Mise en Scene and you relate a chessboard to life and honestly outdid so much of his writing - what a seriously good thing to keep in mind to be more honest with oneself, and know ourselves better insofar as to how we reflect truths about ourselves back at ourselves through mundane behaviours - to be more conscious about the environment we prefer and create, such thing’s as why we do or do not do this or that - so on... idk, I’m going to really keep this in mind**yeah, subbed🤟🏻🤟🏻

    Hi Aram ... I had talked to you a few days ago and that I had submitted 3 query letters for 3 separate shows. 2 are for HGTV and 1 for another concept. The Q. How long does one wait or should wait for a response? Can I send a follow up letter asking ... Hey hello ... I was just making sure that you received my query letter or something as simple as that. Unless you have a suggestion or an opinion on this? Thank you ahead of time! Sincerely, Rick

    • @aramatkinson
      @aramatkinson 7 місяців тому

      Hi Richard, It depends a little. If you sent a cold query, absolutely chase up. They will be receiving quite a few cold enquiries so you'll want to try and stick in their mind (just making sure you aren't sending 'unsolicited material', i.e. your first email if it's cold should be asking permission to send them a pitch deck, rather than sending them the pitch deck). If, however, they already had asked for it and you were sending them the proposal, then I would wait a few weeks. Execs usually have a lot of shows and responsibilities going on simultaneously and will look at your proposal when they get a chance, but pressuring them will probably just annoy them. I've had an exec take a month or longer sometimes to get back to me, and they're always apologetic/grateful for the patience and come back having read the proposal.

This looks like a premiere pro edit by the fonts which surprises me a bit since i think that program is torture to use. Good work on keeping the tension high and incredible acting. I would love to see this turned into a show. Also the shots are beautiful and well planned, shoutout to your storyboard artist and AD for that. I long for the day I don't edit/sound design. What a joy that'll be to have someone else do it, always loved it whenever I've managed to bring an editor or sound designer on but sadly didn't have the time or money to on this one. Thanks for watching it and leaving your input :)

      P.s. incredible work by Oli, agreed! And my producer did a great job doubling up as an AD. Big love for her work

    Great stuff. I've been struggling with a rock-n-roller cart for the past year and it's just too small and too wobbly. Planning on building one of these before my next shoot. FWIW, using a chemical de-glosser will save a ton of time and make your paint adhere better. Rave on!

    • @aramatkinson
      @aramatkinson 10 місяців тому

      A chemical de-glosser, that sounds like something far better than what I used. Out of everything I would change about the cart, it is the paint and also the stick on foam for the front-facing side of the top shelf, good to know I can fix one of these problems!

      @@aramatkinson I'm thinking about water pipe insulation to wrap the frame too - at least on the verticals. I tend to bump into things on set. We'll see.

      "I tend to bump into things on set'' sounds like there are some stories there I'd enjoy to hear haha. Pipe insulation sounds like a good idea. Bubble wrap probably best avoided unless you have a vendetta against the soundie.

    Thank you very helpful video. I'm actually preparing an idea currently to pitch at the Screen Forever conference in Australia. At what script draft stage is it good enough to pitch?

    • @aramatkinson
      @aramatkinson 11 місяців тому

      Depends on the place you are pitching. Some want a full script but usually it's enough to have an outline, but always worth checking! Even if a script gets greenlit they will be wanting to work with you to develop it further so it's never a 'final' draft if you know what I mean!

    Thanks for making this, still an issue 2 years on 😢. I was just honestly shocked the other day when I thought," maybe a production cart could fit in the budget", only then to be immediately traumatized by all the price tags. I saw DSLR video shooters attempt, and if I'm honest it look kind of flimsy. I don't know if I can find scaffolding like this, but I'm sure it's weight rated way above some of the other options.

      It's the nature of filmmaking I guess! "What's that, a spanner? £20. Oh wait ...a FILM spanner? *£2000"
