What you said is only partially true. Kottarathil Shankunni didnot know Syriac. Without knowing Syriac you cannot translate anything from Syriac. Most of the Qurbana Kramam and Kyamtha Namaskaram (yama prarthana) was translated by St. Gregorious (Parumala Thirumeni) . This translation was into prose. Kandathil Varghese Mappila (father of Mamman Mapilla) helped Parumala Thirumeni to convert the prose to verses set to the same tune as the Syriac. Parumala Thirumeni passed away before the work was completed and published. His close disciples Konatt Mathen Malpan and Vattesseril Geevarghese Kathanaar took it upon themselves and completed the work. For a few hymns in the Qurbana kramam when they encountered difficulty in converting the translated prose to verses in the same tune as Syriac , they took the help of Kottarathil Shankunni.
