    I can see that this is a very good skill for people in the past. With a drop spindle and a needle that one could make servasable garments to keep the cold off. Easily transported etc. I f a pauper found a dead sheep it could be picked clean of its fiber and it could be spun and used . How resourceful.

    Maybe stupid question but what size of the needle for woolen yarn size 3 or 2? 😅 Where I would use 3.5 crotchet hook for stitches to be more tight (cause it's socks) ❤

    If I want to make a size 42 would I make 12 starting stitches instead of 10?

    • @valkyrjacom
      @valkyrjacom Рік тому

      Yes you can start with 12, and rather skip some of the increasing stitches if you see that it may become too wide for your foot. But it always depends on the type and thickness of the yarn you are using etc., so the sizing is definitely not an exact science!

    • @valkyrjacom
      @valkyrjacom Рік тому

      When needlebinding you pull the whole working thread through each loop continuosly, which is why you can't have a whole ball of yarn there :)

    Is the clay cup you keep the water in, available somewhere online?

    • @valkyrjacom
      @valkyrjacom 2 роки тому

      The cup is bought at a Viking market here in Norway, from a lovely pair of siblings from Poland, Barbara Zawistowska and Wiesław Zawistowski. :) I buy new cups from them every summer, adding to my collection... Don't think they have an international online shop though, but this site seems to sell some of their products: wszuwarach.pl/20_barbara-zawistowska-i-wieslaw-zawistowski Edit: They have a Facebook page where you can contact them: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100066271164571 You might also find something similar on Etsy if you search for Viking Age og early Middle Ages pottery.

    There is only one book on Nålbinding (Nålbind"n "ing in Japan for some reason) and this book introduces the Oslo stitch as the third and the Broden stitch as the most basic, so people stop because it is too difficult. It is very sad.

      Sorry I can't help you there, needlebinding works in circles, one after the next, like a natural spiral or the wheel of the year... Reminding me of the Norwegian lyrics in one of Einar Selviks songs: "Hjulet syng om ringar, ikkje linjar". ^^ A quick google search does show me it IS possible to produce it though, I just haven't tried that myself. • @valkyrjacom
      @valkyrjacom 2 роки тому

      I actually also prefer to start at the bottom/wide part when making hats (I made a video for that as well which I'll post if I ever find the time to edit it), but I think learning to do a round start is useful. However, if you don't like it, then I don't see any reason why you couldn't use this recipe backwards.
