Hi-Tone Banjo 5-String Irish Banjo

Playing Irish music on a 5 string banjo is a fool’s errand! The right hand finger calculations are such a complex dance. But as a 5 string player thrilled by the Celtic music pulsing drive, the pull is strong. It can be done. In these instructional-like videos I first play the tune 2x at normal tempo, then once slower. Almost all of my sources are tunes notated on this site- the session.org. - I take the music notation given there and convert it to my own version of banjo tab, making note placement and fingerings that are playable. There are a few tabs included written by my banjo teacher from way back in the 1980’s, Mike Allen, a great player. I asked him for some Celtic tunes (in the 1980’s) and have copied the excellent tabs he made back then for me. Tab/ written notation is available free for all tunes at www.banjolessonsks.com
An Unnamed Slide, by Patrick Street, at normal tempo & slower, with 5 string banjo tab
This Slide, unnamed on the album-“Patrick Street Live” caught and held my attention and admiration. If you listen a couple of times you’ll agree. This works with a metronome in 6/8, 12/8, and 4/4 time signatures, the latter because it’s easy to hear it in 4’s. Free 5 string banjo tab-

Coming Through the Rye may be originally a Strathspey, but also makes a nice Slide. Similar to a Jig which is in 6/8 time, Slides are in 12/8. The Brown-Sailed Boat is a Strathspey, a type of dance tune with dotted, exaggerated rhythms, with a bounce called a “Scot’s snap”. Really enjoy your videos- as a foreigner I'd like to know what does "Reel" or "Jig" mean. Are those just regional synonyms for a song?
Those are types of tunes. Google “Irish tune types” and you’ll see the whole panoply. It’s all to do with timing and feel of the music. It was originally music for particular dances which had rhythmical differing step patterns.

I heard this song today on Highlander Radio and had to find it..had to put the search in for banjo 5 string though.

Dad was a minister..1st church preaching was Onaga. He was at one time a standup bass player..for Hylo Brown..he sold his bass in Kansas. Go Jayhawks...or Wildcats.

@@jleej8301 I think you are asking about the chord progression at the bottom of the page on Jimmy Ward’s-there’s an “A” and “B” part of the tune, and these are the chords and number of beats per chord, for each part. Does that help?
