Sprint Triathlon - Sub 20 5k
It was the last Salty Sea Dog Triathlon of the year. It poured with rain but it was a great fun event. I really went hard on the run and managed to just scrape in under 20 mins. It has been a goal for ages to run sub 20 off the bike so I am really happy with that.

I went on a trail run around the stour valley nature reserve in Dorset. My main aim was to see a kingfisher and get it on camera. They are very illusive birds, but with a few simple methods, can be fairly easy to spot. This is also a good training run for my half marathon run that I did on the 18th of July. A video on that will be out soon. Follow me for more outdoor adventures

    huawei watch fit 2 has a similar functionality, i generally run by pace, the principle is the same, it takes an overall average pace for the entire run, and if your lucky enough to have a long, flat, hard, surface to run on you would expect your pace to be quite similar all the way round, bar a last segment 'near death experience' sprint in practice, many of us run on circuits with different gradient's and different surfaces, making an overall average less useful for judging where you are on your target, what these watches need is a running companion using your best (chosen) effort round a set route, which, using the watch's GPS, it can then report back to you in real time

    Hi Sam I just came across this vid and found it really interesting (appreciate it's from a year ago though)... I find myself in a very similar position - targeting a sub 19 5km (aim is to beat my 12+ year old PB of 18:55) currently at around 20 mins, I also find that whatever I do, I always seem to pick up knee (or foot) niggles whenever I increase my run distance, and I also enjoy cycling/zwift etc. Interested to see what kind of running/cycling mileage you achieved your PB off the back of, so will give you a follow on strava - hope that's OK! Are you still keeping up the running / planning any more youtube content? Cheers, Graham.

    Looks like Poole Parkrun. I've done it a few times, and the 10km race around the lakes at Christmas. I suspect that Virtual Partner is fine for a flat course like this, but what if there are hills? My first watch was a basic TomTom Runner. I also found the 'ghost' partner feature by accident, and loved it. Massively motivated me in training. It broke and I replaced with a Polar watch which doesn't have this (but does have estimated finish time feature I don't use (because it's too erratic (because it's based on current pace (one second your EFT is amazing, the next it is dreadful)))). On my TomTom Runner I could race against a previous 'me' in which the pace changed with the hills. The distance ahead/behind indicator was stable because I was running the same course.

    • @SamStewart1
      @SamStewart1 Рік тому

      Yes its Poole, its a flat course which helps. I have used it on a more hilly course and its not accurate but ultimately, it gives an idea. If you know your PB on the course then it will still give you a good target to aim for because it might drop behind on the up hills but you will make up for it on the downs. Im sure there is better solutions out there. It has taught me to understand my body and my natural running pacing has got so much better.

      @@SamStewart1 since my comment I bought a forerunner 245 because it also has 'race an activity', which I believe works with virtual partner. I noticed that virtual partner on its own can only do pacing in 5 second intervals, so not very good if you want it to do 5:47 kilometres, for example. Maybe it works better with 'race an activity'. Thanks for the video. I'm now 47 years old and new to running. I just spent 5 months trying to break 20 minutes (my BP was 20:33 when I started training for it) and eventually got there 4 weeks ago but I had to do a serious amount of training compared to you. Was averaging 50km per week including a 15 km long run to eventually break the barrier. I'm still making marginal gains and ran 19:35 last Saturday so I'm now dreaming about breaking 19 minutes hence why I'm here. I reckon if you upped your mileage and stayed injury free that running close to 17 minutes is a realistic prospect for you.

    Thanks for the video. I have just bought a Garmin 935 which appears to be the only model without Race Pacer! I run a 23m 5k Park Run with 3 x 100ft elevations per lap in mud and soft poorly draining grass. Can the estimated time allow for the hills? Otherwise I think it will say I'm behind on the hills but without indicating how much slower I can go up each incline to still maintain the average. Does it do this or is there another setting? It is like I need a pace for each sector of the lap allowing for hills, thick mud and flat. Bit like an 'optimal lap' F1 drivers compile.

    • @SamStewart1
      @SamStewart1 2 роки тому

      There is a feature that can be used in a similar way called pacepro, but not all garmin watches have it. It’s more of a weighting to positive or negative spilts. The only way I foresee it being able to take into account grade is running against a previous course. But not all garmins have barometer and gps altitude is definitely not accurate enough.
