66 - 2024 in Steam Part 1
I thought it would be fun to put together a review of the Steam on the Road year, and to make sure it's not too long I'm going to split it in to parts, of which this is the first.
I'm looking at rallies now for 2025, and am open to any suggestions you may have, so just let me know.

On a visit to Lincoln I thought I'd have a walk around the original factory sites for the four big traction engine manufacturers in Lincoln - Clayton and Shuttleworth - Foster - Ruston - Robey It's a thoroughly poorly researched video, so please pull it apart in the comments. It's a video pulled together at short notice, poorly researched, and badly filmed. Enjoy.

If you want to go and see the Hook Norton Brewery you can find them here - hooky.co.uk They do excellent tours, and it's fantastic to see the whole of the brewery. There should be another video next week as well!

    Since you're looking for suggestions, maybe you could take a look at an American engine if you happen to come across a full size or mini at a rally. I know they are uncommon there, but I've seen them in videos before from the UK, though I've yet to see anyone from across the pond give their take on one. Even though I live in Texas, I own a 4" Burrell, so it would be interesting to see a short video that highlights the differences in operation.

    Unfortunately life and progress moves on, Councils can barely afford to keep the bare essential services going let alone trying to preserve buildings that really have long since stopped being used fior what they were orginally built for. There is still a large amount of preserved stuff I feel around the country, at the end of the day you cant save everything or the whole of the country would end up being just one massive museum LOL

    • @SteamOTR

      @@SteamOTR I get that, but then you just end up with a load of tat that slowly ends up becoming more and more decayed because some council bods made some pile of tat a "listed building" that no one wants to touch. We had something similar locally, where a property was listed and it just ended up turning to rubble rather than being reovated or restored because of all the caveats on it, eventually it was pulled down after 25yrs of it being empty, so much for it being listed LOL . Pop up to Iron Bridge ( UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Blists Hill theres lots of fantastic preservation up there 🙂 Kew Bridge pumping station, down here we have Twyford Waterworks, The brickworks, Amberley, Hollycombe, Milesstones at Bassingstoke, to name just a few. There is quite a bit already in my mind, just may be not a massive amount in Lincoln.

It is a great pity that some of these building can’t be repurposed in some was to remind people what went on in there area years ago. Unfortunately I could tell the same story’s hear in cornwall. Like holman’s brothers of Camborne, once employed over three and half thousand people building mining equipment shipped all over the world. Lincoln crank were in operation in steam days, probably suppliers to Traction engine manufacturers. I'm sure I've read references to them in books. Lincoln has numerous Victorian buildings that are standing derelict and decaying. I visited there a few months back. There's some murals/posters painted on the wall at the back of the railway station covering the manufacturing history. The museum of Lincolnshire life has a good collection of steam engines and products of Lincoln. This museum is on the top of Lincoln away from the centre. Thanks for taking us on this mini tour of places, whose history we are all proud of.

    Sadly the steam enthusiast is a very small minority and the majority of the people in Lincoln now won't have a clue about any of the companies, likewise the council, unfortunately the majority of buildings are no longer fit for purpose and it's cheaper to demolish and start again, especially with the potential for asbestos in the existing buildings. It's not just Lincoln, Carlisle, my home city was home to Cowans Sheldon (crane makers to the world) and with the exception of a pub opposite what was their works there is no references to them at all.

    I know you've had plenty of pouring tips by now, but I expect if you're brewing etc. you've access to a sterile tube/hose? In that case, you should definitely use it to siphon out your liquids; it'd be easier, safer, and quicker than pouring! Just pop most of the tube into your juice container, keeping only one end outside the container; then pinch/clip the tube near the open end you're holding (so that it fully plugs the tube), and pull some of the tube back out (it will be filled with juice but won't pour back into the container while you've your end sealed). You can then release the pinch/clip when the opening is over your pot (keep the pot at a lower level than the container, like in the video) and then the liquid will drain out to the level of the end of your tube in the juice (you can tie a sterile weight to the end, too, which should get you close to fully emptying it in one go). Once most of the liquid has been siphoned put you can more easily pour the rest into your pot :)

    • @SteamOTR
      @SteamOTR Місяць тому

      I have to confress that there are lots of more intelligent ways to have done this, but hey, I didn't really think about it, and only a relatively small amount spilled. I haven't done any brewing for years, but the fermenter was gathering dust in the cupboard so I thought I'd sterilise it and get it in to use.

      I doubt it at the moment. I'll need to be a bit fitter first. Still struggling after recent surgery, but never say never.

Very impressed with the Fowler ploughing engine, just like the full size!! It’s odd that people don’t subscribe, fenland crusader was saying same thing the other day. Great video👍

    Hello there i was wondering whether you were going to any other steam rallies this year and if you are which ones as I was at the Shrewsbury steam rally and I was part of steam apprentice club. I was one of the people on the engines in the arena. Anyway keep up the good work!
