62 - Shrewsbury Steam Rally 2024
As we weren't at a steam rally this weekend we decided to just pay a visit to Shrewsbury.
Looked to be a cracking rally, and woudl have liked to have stayed for longer.
The rallies we expect to be at this year are -
31st-1st Septemer North Cotswold Steam Rally, Northleach
21st - 22nd Stoke Prior Rally
28th-29th September Kettering Steam Rally
We may not get to all of them, but certainly expect to be at most if not all of the above.
Let me know if there are any others you think I should get to.

Great video. Shrewsbury really do the grand parade properly. I was driving Pepperpot the Wallis simplicity roller
Ah, that's fantastic. Love the simplicity roller.
Have you tried banking the fire overnight? I’d be interested to see how that goes
Yes, but with no real success. The grate is relatively small, and needs a good clear out in the morning, so I've now settled on just accepting that I'm doing it from cold each day.
Wow I've never seen such a huge variety. What is the biggest steam engine show? If it has more variety than this im 100% going. Keep up the great work ✌️
Not 100% sure, but Bedford this year is a very close contender. They'll have 100 full size and 100 miniaturea I hear.
bseps.org.uk/rally/
lovely poem about the engineering company's who made steam engines in England and when we where the work shop to the world
Yeah, it's a really nice touch.
the scrollwork on foremost's flywheel is really something. Don't think i've seen one painted like that before, might have to copy it for my 2" 👀
Really incredible. Don't much fancy being responsible for all that polishing though 😂
Nice seeing you Dan when I was with my Maclaren grate video
Cheers George. Hope to have more time next time.
Great job video there you were in a good spot to be filming those old steamers, I was there on Sunday 🎥👍🏻🇬🇧
Had to wait and hour just to bag the spot, but was worth it I hope.
What a stunning parade Dan! Thousands of hours of restoration work there in that ring. Magic! One for you to consider next year. West of England steam engine society will be having there 70th anniversary rally on 15th16th17th august. The hope is to have 70 engines on site and a road run over to the north coast of cornwall. Great video Dan 👍
It's already on the radar. It clashes with Fairford, and it's an expensive trip in diesel, but may have to be done.
@@SteamOTR That’s good to hear Dan!! We had great rally this year, so things are looking good for the 70th. We are out on a limb down hear in cornwall, the cost to come down has always been an issue. But we did have 100 engine at our 45th rally, so you never know.
Hey can you watch my part 1 of Shrewsbury part 2 up tomorow, and tell me how to improve. should i put the exciting things in part 1 or 2? Also can i use your idea of top 5 engines? if you could give me a shout out that would be amazing.
I'll have a look in the morning 👍
And certainly feel free to use top 5 or anything else!
Whoo number 2. Happy to take you for a spin sometime. Will's miniature is spectacular (he also owns the full size counterpart)
It's great to get somewhere different and see some other engines. I'll take you up on that offer when paths cross again 👍
We were there on Monday, the dryer day of the two. So glad you called it Shrewsbury and not Shrowsbury 😁👍🏻
I never really know what it's supposed to be!
@@SteamOTR take it from a born and bred Salopian, it's Shrewsbury 👍🏻😊
Good to know!
What a fabulous trip! She’s a lovely engine, always admire her when I see her at the rallies Local to me in Witney too
I'm the same. Have always admired her and fortunately Witney is less than an hour away.
Definitely a good size for the road. Our 8nhp Burrell single is a big engine on the road. It’s quick as we converted it to 3 speed. But you’ve got to be on the ball on the smaller roads.
Yeah. Totally agree. That's going to need a steeraman on the ball and tight chains,!
Luck man, i would give my right arm to have a go on a traction engine.
I've been very grateful for the offers I've had.
At Whitby a couple of years ago there was a 9" I think burrell, it was enormous - about the same size as a full scale tasker. It was comical seeing it go round the field with all the other miniatures.
Hehe, yes, they can be really big. Impressive engines really, and certainly more on a par with full sized rather than miniatures.
Another absolutely fantastic video again thanks Dan! I love it when i see the notification for your channel pop up! Great work mate, well done, you should be proud of yourself! 👍😊
Thanks for the comment - really appreciated :-)

loving the high perspective. 60 videos now ... Wow :)
Thanks. Yes, bit of a landmark. Still fun though 👍
Impressive line up of full size engines! And lot of variety in the miniature section too. Another well run rally by the look of it. Great video Dan 👍
Thank you. Lovely rally, and doing incredibly well for it's second event.
@@SteamOTR That’s amazing to be only their second event! Their future is looking good then.
Totally. Great team with a clear vision.
Great video as always 👍
Thanks very much 👍
Oh dear more full size action 😁 you know it will all end in a depleted bank account 😅
Hehe. There's more to come too 😁
Tree almost took your camera.
Yup. Almost a complete wipe out 😂
What a lovely uplifting video, brings back so many memories…
Lovely. Really glad you enjoyed it.
Cirencester looks to be a lovely old town! Burrell steams along very happily on the road, I bet you found that a really enjoyable day Dan. Bigger leavers but same principles I suppose! Great👍
Lovely town. Roman town originally. Great to take an engine around.
Jw's 6nhp engine if I'm not mistaken.? Lovely engine as is his rd loco Independence. Great video.
Yup. That's the engine 👍
Thanks lovely video Dan, reminds me of aged parents taking us to Rempstone and Elvaston rallies. Maybe too north for you guys ;)
We do want to get further afield nesxt year. It was 200 miles for us down to Bocconoc so virtually anything is possible!
Hello steam on the road it's Owen Tom's oldest kid Luke would know me from hatches we went to South cerney to I have my own UA-cam channel now and I'm uploading some South cerney videos
I've subscribed 👍
Thank you
are you going to fairford
Just bought a 4" Burrell from the UK, and am having it imported to the US. Really wish we had steam rallies like the one's you all enjoy over there. It's not that we don't have them, they're just farther apart and fewer in number. Not as much interest in road steam over here.
You'll have to come over here and enjoy some of ours :-)
Oh dear how long before theres a full size on your drive 🤣you need to stop hanging about with the full size boys 😉We might give that one a go next year as it doesnt look too evil to get to for us, although is a good 200mile round trip
Hehe. Full sized will definitely happen 😁One day.......
I love your videos! I just got a 1946 3” freelance traction engine, your videos really hype me up to get her going!! Thank you❤
Brilliant. Would be great to see it at a rally.
Well there are things I like at rallies and things I do not. I like of course watching old engines and the socializing with people, preferred when you are a group of friends, go there. Chatting, drink beer and so on. I just was on German or Dutch steam rallies, so these are minor compared with British, also even steam rallies there are much more old diesels than steam... What I do NOT like: Organs, all the time these organs is unnerving. People standing in the way all the time, where you want to go through and see something (If you are chatting around just stand aside, so other people can go there). Then there are these bored woman/mothers often with little children, complaining all the time (Yes I understand the weekend is family time, but could they not give their husband a "day off"? Instead, they are passively aggressively and bored walking around, putting everyone in bad mood). These women are trying to get attention by chatting up their husband about other family topics while he is looking at a steam engine. Otherwise they have 24/7 time to tell him! Lastly, I was once on rally where smoking cigarettes was forbidden, because fire hazard and air pollution (protection of non smokers). Yes generally makes sense BUT not on a rally with traction engines, these are a fire hazard also and polluting more than any cigarette.
Have to admit that I share your dislike of organs!
Interesting experiment thanks for showing it, we have a 4cd over here in east anglia that is run on logs
No probem - gad you enjoyed it.
From my maths at 400/Ton and 50% less heat per Ton they are more expensive than coal.. interesting solution tho.
Yup. Seems odd, but it's an innovative solution
@@SteamOTR will you be at south Cerny Dan? Me and Mike are taking the tasker tomorrow. (Nick)
@@v8bmwboyyeah. We'll be there
Great to see that they looked after you well at boconnoc! Like you say “ good friendly atmosphere and help when you need it goes a long way to enjoying a rally. Great you met James! I have had some fascinating chats with him over the years, he is just a mine of information and a true gentleman.
Agree 100% with both those statements.
@@SteamOTR I remember seeing him driving his quarry Hunslet loco down at the LSR
Interesting with the Pellet-firing...
Yeah. It's great to see new ways being worked out.
Awesome.
She's a lovely engine for sure
that is a beautiful engine, and clever how it all works too
Some magnificent engineering has gone in to that.
That was a very awesome video.
Thank you very much, glas you enjoyed it.
What scale is the aprentice?where are the kits from if its not scratch built?
The Apprentice is a 4 inch scale, so 1/3rd size. The kits are made by Steam Traction World.
The only thing I dont like is those infernal steam sirens. Something I will never say at a rally😂😂
Hehe. I quite like them, but only when used sparingly!
Hi Dan, absolutely lovely to meet you and talk to you at last agreed the engine man’s bar was an absolutely amazing idea more rally’s need to do this! But lovely to meet you and see tilly running hopefully see you again next year! Robin
Good to meet you too. Yes, hopefully we'll be down next year.
Dr Busker makes a rally for me Dan. Also, a decent road run.
Hehe - I'm not a fan of Dr Busker. I like to be able to have a beer and a chat and find that Dr Busker usually takes over the beer tent and is too loud for conversation. But know alot of other people do like him. I just end up outsie the beer tent somewhere I can hear!
@@SteamOTR You need to immerse yourself in the lyrical genius and join in Dan. I went to Welland last weekend. Cracking rally to be fair. The heavy haulage ring was amazing. Road locomotives working hard. Heaven 🫶🏼
Yup - Heavy haulage is where it's at. Love to see any engine working hard.
I like a rally where you can drive around as long as you like and where everyone is friendly and happy. There isn’t a lot that turns me away from rally’s so I can’t say anything against. I loved boconnock this year. It was well controlled and I wasn’t told off for driving around on the roads until 10 pm on a 4” Burrell road loco 😂. I hope to see you next year
Yeah - agreed. Great to be able to move around alot. Hope to see you again next year.
Hi I'm thomas boylings brother benjamin boyling I was walking around with the blonde boy kaylen thank you for coming I had the fowler tiger tractor here called firefly hope you've had a great time
It was a fantastic rally. So welcoming.
was good to catch up to you, and I'm glad you enjoyed it down our part of the world! and always a bonus that the weather mostly behaved
Lovely weather and a great time 👍
makes a good rally is if there is plenty of space to drive the engine around and we have clean water and some decent coal what breaks the rally is when the entitled full sizers from tinkers park take all of the coal so we cannot steam
Yeah, not having coal to steam is going to suck!
The great thing with having a miniature you have transport thus the beer tent can be 1 mile away for all it matters. As for what makes or doesnt make a rally I think where you are placed as base camp often makes a massive difference. Theres a rally a event we dont do now as we always ended up being placed opersite shall we say undesirables. You just had this feeling if it wasnt bolted down it would quietly vanish, and the whole time it was "whats that worth mate" 🙄 Also being near the generators of the food concessions isnt ideal. Bit like the West Oxen one you did where you seemed to be over the road from the spit bangs, that would have driven us a bit mad, but then saying that if we end up based in a poor location we tend to get out and just chuff about more. Totally appreciate though the dificulites organisers have in setting these shows up mind.
I don't like to steam after beer, so tend to put Tilly to bed early!
@@SteamOTR Fair enough each to their own, for us theres nothing better to be sat down by the beer tent with the engines gentley ticking over into the late evening listening to a band and chewing over the fat or should that be coal 🤣
Playing with engines is always the best bit of the rallies but also showman’s outside the beer tent on a Friday and Saturday night is also a highlight
We had showmans outside the Miniatures Beer Tent at the weekend. Very good it was too.
@@SteamOTRnothing beats it
@@SteamOTR I can remember Susie visiting Bodmin steam railway back in the day
Can't help wondering when you ll be looking for a big engine for yourself Dan
Hehe - Yes, I'd love to, but still a long way off financially.
Are you planning on coming next year?? It was nice seeing engines from further up this year. By the way I was the one that drove that 4” Burrell road loco round the field a fair few times on Saturday night
Would certainyl come back. Loved the rally.
I’ll look forward to seeing you there next year then!👍
