Seefried and Jurinac (both sopranos) were the greatest Komponists of my generation and have been unmatched since probably Seefried the greatest interpreter of a role created by Lotte Lehmann. Ludwig was also quite excellent. Troyanos is definitely a Mezzo but her high notes are not strained though her voice itself is not quite as beautiful as those of Seefried (playing the Komponist as a young Beethoven) or Jurinac ( more of a young Mozart). I think the Komponist is one of the most compelling roles ever created by Richard Strauss

Love the line by Papageno at the end: "Mischen Sie sich nicht in meine Familienangelegenheiten!" = "Butt out of my family stuff!" more or less.

Dickson's performance as Papageno in this production (of what is my favorite opera/Singspiel) is the one against which I measure all other Papagenos (despite his minor flub in the "suicide" aria). He wrung the comedy out of the part the way no other has nor probably will.

Pamina is is a lyric soprano role. It can be a medium sized lyric ( Dorothea Roschman, Kiri te Kanawa, Felicity Lott, Renee Fleming etc. ) which is best really as the rôle has some dramatic moments and benefits by a lot more tone. It can also be played by a more pert soubrette ( Dawn Upshaw, Kathleen Battle etc ) which plays on the innocent youth qualities…. or even at the other end a jugenlich soprano with heft which is incredible ( Tina Kiberg, Pilar Lorengar) . Coloratura sopranos also play with this as they drop the Queen ( Diana Damrau, Lucia Popp ). This version would be in the medium lyric soprano fach style. It is a controlled sound with some effective darkness at the middle low register from Esham’s natural lyric high mezzo voice she altered into soprano. A meaningful performance very noble. The costumes of the 1980’s production are so much better than what one sees today where they are often in abstract rags.

After seeing Amadeus when it first came out in theaters, I was intrigued. Seeing that The Magic Flute was playing on PBS (early 90s?) I got out a vhs cassette and recorded it while watching it the first time. I loved it so much I wore the tape out. For years (decades?) I've wanted to see it again but never knew the exact year, cast, or where it was performed so I could never find it. Thanks to you I finally have the information needed to hopefully somehow find this gem and add it to my collection once more! If not, at least I can enjoy the glimpses of it on your channel. Thank you so much for this!

I was a supernumerary in The Gondoliers with Faith back in 79 or so. Still recall my placing the chair for her to sit down on stage. I was so impressed with her, i sent her a dozen roses to her at the Howard Johnson’s where she was staying.
