Come along with me as I travel by bicycle and foot along some of the Highways, Byways, Bridleways and Footpaths of my home county of Norfolk (I might even venture into Suffolk!) visiting some interesting and historical places of interest that you may not of even heard about.
I will probably be rambling on as I ramble, sort of visual podcast style.

Congratulations on your perseverance, finding the milestone in amongst those brambles should be commended 😊👍 Really enjoying these walks and your commentary along the way.I’m surprised in regards to the amount of open land out there. The weather looks to be getting colder , wish I was over there we are expecting 4-5 days of over 36 C in Melbourne. Take care 😊
Amazing how nature quickly covers things over.
Thank you for the good look around Eye castle. I used to pass it often on my way to and from work. I stopped for a look one day, but the gates were locked, and I didn't have time to find a key. Your tour has filled a gap for me. 👍
If you ever go to Somerset do not fail to visit Fenny Castle. It is a very small earthwork, with two mounds, one bigger & taller than the other, in a field. No notice, no information, but very interesting.
Sounds interesting, I will have to visit there next time I am in the area.
Building that bank of earth would have been a heck of a task. Would some lord have been ordering his serfs to do that work? How would that have been achieved?
Really enjoyable tour , especially the old castle. What a commanding view from the top of that hill. One thing for sure , your fitness level will be on the improve. Thanks once again. Take care , looking forward to the next instalment on the Greeves video. 👍👍
Beats going to the gym! 😉
Thankyou for showing me around the area. Interesting video.
Must have been a right pain living on top of that motte with no water, when you wanted a bath. In the summer I suppose you would just take a swim in the nearby river. Maybe they were not so fussy about bathing in the winter back then. Or maybe your more fortunate friend would let you have a borrow of their tin tub in front of their range on a Saturday night.
Yes does make you wonder how they managed all those years ago.
@NorfolkNomad-UK I wonder if there could be an old, possibly collapsed well shaft, hidden in that motte or bailey?
@@sarahstrong7174 I would be surprised if there wasn't one somewhere in the bailey
Thankyou for sharing.
Thanks for watching, lots more on my channel and more to come so please subscribe if you've not already done so. 👍
Fenland 😊 quite enjoyed that walk. I’m amazed at the size of the area , although considering it was an airfield for heavy bombers during the war it’s not too hard to imagine large open areas for landings / take offs and various large buildings would have been quite extensive. Thank you for the time you put into these videos. 👍👍
Well done, you got to the end of the video!
Hi Ian this walk is on the top of our list just as soon the rain stops , we are local to you so enjoy your little bits of history & paths to wander , I'm also a new member of VJMC so can appreciate your other channel , hope to catch up some time if you don't mind ,kind regards
Glad you are enjoying the videos, lots more to come so please keep watching. Probably bump into you at some point!
Grand old Church. I'm glad you were able to enter and show us inside.
Very nice area to explore , so tranquil , somewhere you could just sit and watch time go by. Sad about the landed gentry shooting the peasants , I had to laugh. I hope you had a terrific Christmas with family and look forward to more videos when the weather improves. Take care 👍👍
Every sunday and sometimes a Saturday, i do exactly the same thing as yourself. Exploring Norfolk and Suffolk averaging 14 miles a day come rain or shine, Looking for remains of ww2 airfields and such . Its refreshing to see someone with the same passion. Nice video and i did enjoy the pop ups of information 👍
Glad you're enjoying the videos, history is another passion of mine so I do like to put in some snippets of info if I can.
An excellent day for a walk , those pill boxes certainly are well camouflaged as a result of time and as you commented do seem to be in out of the way places. Sad coming across that memorial in the field however it’s good to see that the sacrifices made during the war are still appreciated today. Have a great Christmas and New Year , and thanks for the walks through some great areas. 👍🎅🎅
Yes that memorial was totally unexpected and very poignant reminder.
There are two castles in Thetford, the other is a ringwork called The Red Castle. It is marked on the board at 19:05.
Never been there but just watched your video on that and subscribed.
@NorfolkNomad-UK Returned the favour.
Commented on your Quiddenham walk that I walked from Harling to Attleborough - next video I watched was this one which was also on the same trip!!.. Those last two fields you passed through, in the second one I had a very scary encounter with a load of bullocks. I followed the advice of walk purposely, don't make eye contact and just keep walking. But 4 bullocks broke away from the herd and came very close. One was jumping up and down on its front legs like it was feigning a charge. There's absolutely no escape from that field because the fence butts right up against trees and bushes. I kept walking until I got to the corner of the field, launched by rucksack over and followed soon after. How farmers think its a good idea to put cows in fields with public footpaths??? Even pulling that fence in a couple of meters would give you the option to go around. Anyway it was a good walk and a pleasant surprise. I actually lived in East Harling next to the chip shop for a few years and never new this path existed.
I did a walk from West Harling to Attleborough and passed through there and I can remembering hearing that dog barking at me as I passed through. This would have probably been maybe July/August time. Guess I was lucky. Its strange that it looks like a public road, but whoever lives down that lane treats the whole place like a dumping ground. Rubbish strewn around everywhere in what would have been quite a nice lane.
West Harling to Attleborough, that's a good walk. I have done a few videos in & around West Harling, also Eccles & Haugham (lovely churches there) which you probably passed nearby.
The rain must have washed it away now, but I went up there a few weeks ago and it was a minefield of sheep's droppings at the top of the hill. 😂 Glad it was all clear for you!
As always, tread carefully! And thanks for subscribing.
Subscribed good luck
Thanks 😄
Litterbugs make me MAD!!!!
Well deserved refreshment at the end of a long journey 😊 An interesting place for the pillbox , although who knows what significance was placed upon the surrounding area. Possibly the airfield. The lost village is somewhat interesting. Hope the new boots are breaking in alright.
There were a lot of airfields in Norfolk, closest being Snetterton, Old Buckenham, Fersfield & Knettishall but this pillbox is not close enough to be of any use to them. Was probably just on one of the 'stop lines'. Boots doing fine thanks!
What a terrific looking station , and the stone bridge really tops it off. If I manage to get back to the UK for a visit , this’ll be on the itinerary. Thanks for another great video 👍👍
Great place to watch the world go by, cup of tea and cake from the cafe, unbeatable!
What a lovely place. They need a new poster up in the station, 'Filmed here - Norfolk Nomad'.
I will have to suggest it to them!
Another nice walk through the countryside , nice to see the amount of views increasing. Feel a bit sorry for the pheasants who successfully cross the busy road only to be dodging the cross hairs of the local shooting brigade. 😊👍👍
Yes, seem to be getting a few more views and subscribers.
Great ride out, the Manor house is stunning. I don't like litter bugs either. Why don't people take pride in their surroundings?
A very nice outing , that hall is an incredibly beautiful building.Pat on the back for picking up the litter , I too become quite annoyed when rubbish is left about , especially when there are disposal bins close by. You’ll have to explain the “Suffolk “ reference 🤔🤔 Take care and thank you for another adventure 👍👍
Just a bit of local county rivalry, although I have lived as much in Suffolk as I have in Norfolk you have to give a bit of friendly banter!
This walk would have to be the best one so far , I’m surprised how much wooded area there is to explore. The two very old oak trees just after you crossed the busy road look to be extremely well preserved. Thanks again , take care 👍👍
There are a lot of woods in this area, Thetford forest is just a stones throw.
Quite a large church , and with an organ as well. I wonder how big the current congregation is. Thanks for the video. I think you’re correct in regard to the structural integrity of those columns although I dear say they will outlive both of us .. 👍👍
I guess they built for the long term back then. There is a hospital in Kings Lynn that was built in the 1980's and is currently being held up by hundreds of props!
Looks like possibly data corruption ??
memory card had just been formatted if that would have any effect
Great walk again Ian. It's been wetter than an Otter's pocket here.
That sounds very wet indeed!
Thanks again for a terrific video , you deserve to be having loads more people enjoying these informative strolls through the countryside. Totally agree with your comments in regard to the current crop of television shows trying to turn all of us into culinary/dancing/do it yourself home building experts. It’s sad to see that these walk ways are slowly disappearing as local landowners seemingly expand their empires. Hopefully efforts such as yours will encourage more people to explore the diminishing countryside. Cheers , well done 👍👍
Thanks for the encouragement. It is really difficult to break through the youtube algorithms to get your videos promoted unless you have a pretty face and a large chest... I have neither!
Fascinating place Ian.
Ridden past there countless times commuting to work but the first time I've visited.
Well worth the visit. This would have been quite an impressive structure in its day. Thanks again for the video , a nice way to star my day. 👍👍
Another great expedition Ian. History is always just around the corner on this Island of ours.
Yes, the more you look the more you find.
Quite an interesting area , obviously of some importance years ago in regard to the substantial effort that must have gone into creating that sizeable moat. Well worth a look at what remains of the original castle. Thanks again 👍👍
Tour of the castle in the next video.
Great ride out Ian. Hope we get some more decent weather.
I was concerned that if it had been a child rather than me the situation could have been much worse so I did report this incident to the Police. Who, to my surprise, actually did follow up on this and visit the premises. The owner has received a warning that the dog now has to be kept in the grounds and not allowed to run wild. It's an offence to let a dog be dangerously out of control whether that's in public or private. This has made me a little jumpy every time I hear a dog barking that I can't see!
An unfortunate encounter with vicious Norfolk wildlife!
A trip to Norwich castle to borrow some armour might be required!
So that’s the culprit , thankfully the injury wasn’t too bad , although it’s bad enough when the so and so keeps coming for you. Take care
Did sort of ruin my day, had to make a 40 mile round trip to the walk-in centre and an 1-1/2 wait to see someone, luckily I didn't need a tetanus jab but did have to go on antibiotics for a week!
Another great video , firstly I hope you’re not too bad after the dog incident, love dogs however the ones on “the dark side” are truly frightening when you are cycling and their one objective is to cause total devastation. A lovely old building and pretty much in good condition considering its age. Your mention of the metal railings still being there and not being removed during the war brought back memories of my late father who grew up in Collierswood South London who would often talk about how all the houses in their street had railings and fences removed during the war. Anyway take care hope all is well 👍👍
Not too much of an injury, apparently it's quite common for dogs to attack cyclist's, even normally well behaved ones!
Thanks again Ian for another very entertaining video. That church is quite interesting and I cannot believe that it is in relatively good condition especially considering it’s not under lock and key. It’s quite a shame as you stated that the community doesn’t organise some working bees in regard to maintaining the surroundings especially considering the age of the graves. I do hope you continue with these videos and that the forthcoming winter months are not too bad. Happy cycling, take care 👍👍
Most churches have an 'open door' policy and are usually just locked dusk till dawn. Glad you enjoying these videos.
I've just been along the bridleway again and it's still blocked! Even had an HGV parked up loading piglets, I guess they have to load somewhere but they could at least move the loading trailer off the bridleway when done.
Are u local to E.H. ? I'll give u a test - where did Barney Eleaner live ? U showed his house, but which one, and when ?
I don't know but I bet my dad will. Yes I am local.
Dad said Barny Elner lived in one of the cottages in the row near the end of the lane during 40's or 50's, apparently I live a stones throw from his daughter Deirdre!
@@NorfolkNomad-UK Correct - last cottage. Ask him if he knew Sybil Wooldridge.
@@gordonbennet1094 Yes he did, said she had 2 sons, Tony & Keith, about the same age as him.
@@NorfolkNomad-UK Incorrect - she had three sons - Tony, John, and Keith. I am Keith. What's your father's surname ?
There are some lovely unspoilt villages and countryside over your way Ian.
It is very rural, we don't even have any motorways in Norfolk!
Well ,this has started my Saturday morning off in a good way with another interesting adventure. You are lucky to have a lot of areas to explore which are blessed with a lack of traffic. That church seems to be waiting for the next high wind to well and truly end its days, quite unfortunate really as it must have a building of some grandeur in days gone. Thanks again take care 👍👍
Yes that Church is looking a little precarious, although I suspect it will outlive the cardboard box houses being built today!
A really interesting walk. Do keep using those paths, they have a habit of disappearing.
I have been looking at some old maps and it's surprising how many have already been lost.
Nice walk in the countryside and no crazy dogs or the odd rampaging bull. All in all a good day out. Thanks for the tour and the bit of history 👍👍
A lovely lane with a lot of history, there used to be a thatched cottage opposite the old pubs, later demolished and became allotments, now has bungalows on it.
I wonder who removed the signs and blocked off the byway? What a mystery! Great ride out Ian. We have similar experiences with Muntjacs here in Oxfordshire. You picked up the pace on the run to the pub! Pity it was closed. Best wishes, Dean.
The trouble with Muntjacs is that unlike native deer they breed throughout the year so their numbers are huge. A beer is always a good incentive!
I’m glad you knew where you were going 🤔🤔 Another enjoyable video. Take care and thank you.
I can get lost in my own back yard!
First subscriber! Good luck Ian.
