Thank you for the advice.
'It couldn't be any other city because it's a marvel comic' had me howling 😂 Great advice and thoughts on flow! I have subbed!
Awesome! Right back at ya with a sub !
Hi! you have a good stuff going there. I know it is hard to live by art itself because some succeed and others no at all. How long have you been doing comics and if this is your only source of income, its "enough " to live by? I have been drawing since I was a kid, of course there is still plenty to learn, but I always am very concerned to dig in and learn more and don't pay off. I would appreciate your feed back. thanks .
To answer your first question : I've been doing this comics for a little under a year at this point. I had a previous comic 2 years ago but only worked on it for about 2 months. No i make no income from my comic work as of now, I am a fulltime freelance artist / designer / sometimes animator the comic is my personal project. As far as digging in and trying something new. Do it. Every time you can. There is no reason to hold yourself back from something that you may love. Even if you find that comics are not for you, your brain will still grow and learn from the act of trying new things and breaking the mold. I'm not saying drop everything or quit your job to make comics, I've been working on the first issue of Wytchborne for months because I'm still drawing it when and if I have the time between my job and life stuff. But that doesn't mean I'm not giving 100% to when i do work on my comic. So take your time. Even if it's an hour or two a day, just try that thing you wanna try. You'll suck at it at first (unless your an annoying prodigy lol) But you will eventually see the pay off. maybe the pay off isn't what you expect but I think that you will be more satisfied that you tried rather than wondering what if ? Life's to short to be concerned with "failure" there is no failure in trying because you beat the version of you and 80% of the planet that never did the thing that they wanted to try but were to scared to. ok sorry for ranting. TLDR Get out there and make something awesome !
I really appreciate you take your time to answer my question. I remember when I was a kid a used draw day in day out. Now I’m neglected it I gotta get back to it. Thank you so much for your inspiring words, I wish you great success on your endeavors.
The best method is to do a small storyboard of all the pages on a standard size paper. Lay down the first ideas, don't draw intricate details, just basic form of character and the panels shape, sizes and angles. Having all of your pages on one page help you to navigate with your eyes the full story.
sleeping on heavy decisions also works wonders, specially if the decision you're gonna do is one that's gonna affect your life a lot
Those models you use for reference, the head, hand, body and so on, did you make them yourself, or are they available to buy somewhere?

@@armstrongillyAre you going to do any real-time videos?
@@NightPhoenixPress Possibly - When it comes to videos on UA-cam I usually don't like to go over 10 minutes because I feel most people don't have the attention span to watch a 2 hour video of me inking or painting (and it's not something I personally would want to watch) . But if its something people would be interested in I have no qualms about showing the whole process with minimal editing. We'll just have to see. However if you are interested in watching my process in a slower form I have one or two videos that go longer because im explaining more broad topics so the footage is much slower than this.
@@armstrongilly I love them and usually go to sleep on them and watch them again when I wake up, especially if you're drawing badgirl, superheroes and action pages. I love all the Jim Lee VODs from his live streams, Manny Draws and a few others. I'm going to be uploading mine soon when I'm better at drawing on camera. Maybe consider posting the real time version and the speed draw version. I mean it's extra content if nothing else.
@@NightPhoenixPress True that I may give it a shot
This was interesting, would be cool to hear more about panel composition
@@MiguelSilva-kv7do Glad to hear ! That video is still cooking but I promise it will be served once properly seasoned and garnished!
I agree with you about scripting, but I also agree with you that trying to hold the whole story in your head and just draw it out is a horrible method! lol The problem is that you're not going to notice the flaws in your pacing, plot and story construction until after you've done a bunch of work. I think it's a recipe for regret. On the other hand, for me personally, scripting is what has caused me to lose interest and abandon every project I've started in my entire adult life (been making comics since before I could even read and write the dialog balloons. It's a sickness). EVERY time I tried to "do it the correct way" and start with a script, I'd end up with something that's so horribly boring, clunky, badly paced and overly wordy that I couldn't even bring myself to want to draw it. What's currently working AMAZINGLY for me now, not only producing far better results but actually making the whole process FUN and super motivating is this: Instead of a script, I just make a stream-of-consciousness idea dump document where I throw down every idea I currently have for the story. This is also important because I have SO MANY ideas that I will absolutely forget a bunch of them if I don't write them down. Then, I distill that document into a bullet list of single sentences, each spelling out a specific sequence or story point. No dialog, no descriptions of what it should look like, just super simple bullets like "our hero is devoured by the monster". Basically a skeletal map of my plot. In this list form, it's so easy to see your plot holes and fix them simply by adding another bullet point or two. Then I assign page numbers to the bullet points so I can get a rough sense of the pacing of my story. Then I do the rough draft of each page using the bullet points I've assigned, but giving myself the flexibility to add or subtract pages depending on what I come up with. My goal is to design something that is clear, hits the plot point I need to hit in order to move the story forward and is fun to look at. And it's incredibly fun visually solving how "our hero is devoured by the monster" should play out. it's like solving a puzzle. Inevitably I think of things that I NEVER would've come up with if I were trying to think of it all in advance. I need to SEE it develop on the page. Then, once I have my rough pages all drawn and I can see the story works as best it can without text, I go in and write the dialog and captions as I letter the pages (my entire process is digital). This approach works great because I've forced myself to make the storytelling as clear as possible without any dialog and can now write dialog that fits the art and fills in details only where it's needed. And I also inevitably think up better dialog because I can see what the characters are seeing, have them reacting to nuances and actions that I only could've come up with by actually drawing the page first. And I'm also able to easily make any changes to the art that I need to accommodate the text. Then what I have is a complete, fully readable story with final lettering/panel borders and rough pencil art. Now all I have to do is go back and make it look good, all the heavy lifting is done. I just wish I'd realized all this decades ago. 😑
@@stevewik2280 that’s a very good idea for the process. I’m totally with you on not wanting to start out with just a script. Recently, the way that I have worked is I thumbnail pages while writing notes or ideas along with my sketches. It’s still probably not the ideal way to go about working, but it helps me balance out some of the scenes and ideas without spending a ton of time working on drawings that are not final. Thank you a lot for sharing some of your experience! I will have to give your method a try !
I Iove this Steve! Thanks for sharing it! I draw but haven’t tried out sequential art, though I’m a fan, and I’d love to give it a solid try but I’ve been dragging my feet because it seems pretty overwhelming. The way you laid out seems to really break things into manageable parts that actually lead you through the ideation and organizing without the overwhelming need to have everything figured out beforehand.
I need to say this. But seeing that you are inking from bottom-right my anxious level went over the roof. It's better to ink from top-left (if you are right handed), because the risk you will accidentaly smudge the ink is much lower.
@@HermenegildGaido thanks for the tip ! I surprisingly haven’t had that problem. I think it is because of the paper that I am using that is very absorbent, although I will not claim that I haven’t smudged my fair share of pages before lol. Sorry to make you anxious inking is actually very relaxing for me so sometimes I just try things without thinking or worrying about the consequences. But again thanks for the suggestion!

AWESOME APPLE IS HERE
Beginner artist here, love watching your storyboard videos! Question: how do you pace your panels? Is there some form of a rule like 3 panels max from this perspective on this scene?
Thanks ! Good question. -Short answer - No there isn't a set rule for my pages (or any rule in general) for a scene. It just comes down to how you want to pace the scene. you need to find the best way to get the characters from A to B, making sure to not break continuity from the other pages. -Long answer - I look at a lot of manga and comics to determine what they use to pace their scenes out, and everyone uses a different formula. Usually the more panels you see on a page the longer your scene will be and the less panels the quicker the scene is happening. That is typically why pages with dialogue have more panels than those with action. However this isn't a hard and fast rule, in comics like Gideon Falls (great masterclass in paneling) you can see dialogue pages with 3 panels and then fight scenes with 14 panels (no joke i counted). Meanwhile in manga like Witch Hat Atelier (very very good example of paneling/ worldbuilding) , there's a lot of the world that the author wants to show as well as the reaction and expression of her characters, so she utilizes a lot of framing elements and large dramatic panels that don't slow the pace of the story but instead enhance the events of the story. SOOOO what does that all mean ? Study what you like and what you believe will work for your comic or manga. I take inspiration from all sorts of media (movies, manga, anime, games, comics, old radio programs...etc.) and I'm constantly asking myself "why did they frame that shot the way that they did ?" "why do i like/hate this scene?" etc. So when I sit down to write I try to find a feeling or idea that i want to convey to the reader and try to draw from my "memory bank" of good scenes (pro tip keep a physical library of the comics and stories you like) and then I compare that scene to what I want to show to the reader. In the end if I feel like the scene is to slow or fast I rely on the "rules" of comics and frame based on that. Hope that rant makes sense lol
