    Great review! I'm thinking of trying this hammock out. Here in Florida, the netting will be sufficient for Mosquitos, but for "no-see-ums" as we call them (tiny midges that live near the water and can crawl through some mosquito netting) I'm not quite sure if it will suffice.

    • @badgeroutdoors3115
      @badgeroutdoors3115 Місяць тому

      While I love Florida, man you have some bugs there !! Never knew midges could get through netting. I've done hammocking in Scotland which has killer midges, and I survived. Everything in Florida seems to bite or sting - not sure I'd last long. Thanks for the comment.

    Thanks for this. Brilliant format - enjoying the trip first, useful gear chat and specs second. Subbed! I'm looking at an older Ridge Raider with the eVent fabric, as it seems the right size for a side sleeper to get full loft and store gear inside. What do you think about the width of the Jupiter for someone who sleeps semi-fetal (ie a knee up)? Also, funny question but I have an intense phobia of slugs, despite years of camping. Do you have any tips on avoiding their territories or observations on where/when they appear and what draws or repels them?

    • @badgeroutdoors3115
      @badgeroutdoors3115 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment and positive feedback. I've been quiet online recently but hoping to pick it up a bit. I do like the eVent fabric as I have Rab Ascent also and love it. The Ridge Raider looks a great option and great height to it. If you sleep semi-fetal, I think you could to a degree, but i'd maybe look at something a bit wider. Not tried it with everything in, but just rolled it out and I think you'd be touching the sides too much. Military Bivys (Carinthia Explorer 2) have plenty of width, but heavy canvas. So I think you could, but it would be tight depending on legs. Man, slugs.....ah. The only way I have avoided them over the years is in the winter. From spring to autumn is terrible where I live. They are attracted to my feet smell. A mat with Sawyer Permetherin on it works - while it is meant for ticks, ive watched slugs touch it and run (slowly). Couple of slicks stuck in the ground and boots upside down to keep off the ground. Anyhow, thanks for the comment. Cheers for now.

    Thanks for the review and handy tips. Long time 11foot/83% user, 6ft myself, recently bought a couple 12’ Tukeke hammocks (good parachute material, well stitched, no frills though) for £5.20 apiece in the UK posted, the 12’ ones must’ve been not so popular, but I’m looking forward to getting out in them later in the spring (Grampian Scotland), when it’s a little bit drier. Made my own half bugnets, rain shields, adj ridgelines, hang straps etc for both our hammocks, the bugnets attach via adjustable elastic cord to the ridgeline, so should be transferable without issue. Always rather surprised that so relatively few here have yet discovered the warmth and comfort afforded by a good (even if basic) parachute nylon 11’ or 12’ hammock decked with a decent down fl underquilt - hard to get out of it in the morning, so cosy, comfy and always get a great sleep in them! 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😊🥃

    • @badgeroutdoors3115
      @badgeroutdoors3115 4 місяці тому

      Never tried a half bugnet. All up for saving weight and like the idea of an elastic attach to the ridgeline. Nothing like a hammock with a good UQ. Quite agree, the hardest thing to get used to with hammocks is climbing out of it in the morning. Thanks for the comment. I'm taking a break for a bit, but hopefully more videos down the line.

      Not 100% sure I agree. I think the saw, from other comments can break at the strap apparently, but not cheap, although maybe crap - but light crap. The pump seems fine and helped my fire again last night. The night vision has been amazing, however overall I think you are better off getting a full camera and paying that bit extra. Its too delicate even though light weight.

  • @alexpervanoglu7420

    The Bow saw is a Boreal 21. I have one. Also you can get a smaller one at about 12 inches. I've used those Nordic saws, the straps fail and the blade needs sharpening as with a chainsaw. I'll stick with my Boreal 21.

    • @badgeroutdoors3115

      Really good point on the Nordic saw. Surprised about the straps and a good point to mention sharpening. I will update in my next video if I use it. It is no Boreal 21 which I was out using last night - monster.

    Happy new year, i need a new hammock, mine is a 10ft hammock at the moment and is too small, im only 5ft 8. Question is would you for 11 or 12ft . Regardts Ant

    • @badgeroutdoors3115
      @badgeroutdoors3115 8 місяців тому

      Tough one. Big is more comfy if you can handle the few grams extra. Think about your ridge line length and tarps. A 12 ft may not fit under your standard tarp unless you keep the same hammock ridge line length as used on an 11ft. You then end up with more sag, but i've found I quite like that. I'd certainly agree 10ft is probably too small. At your height I think 11ft should be fine, but I'd always be thinking about 'what if' I got the extra comfort !

    That was a competent review of the onewind zipper hammock. Thank you. I am not a huge fan of onewind, allthough it's my first hammock to sleep well in. I was pretty sure that the zipper wouldn't be grand quality, so I got the bottom entry bug net version. My assumption is that their 70D Nylon fabric is not the greatest either, and inferior to western 70D. My 100kg body weight sinks in quite a bit when I lay down. I prefer a stiff zero stretch lay.

      Really appreciate the feedback. You bring up a very good point about material and I have not really ever got into that aspect. No, not really. Simons wood is an ideal little place and for kids though. Don't know anywhere else. I am going to try a local farmer soon to get permission for rabbit hunting and if that goes well, I may ask for a woodland I know. I tend to stick to woodlands which are owned by a large group like Forestry Commission, and be respectful. Anything owned by an individual is definitely a stealth camp and I tend to shy away from those.

    • @badgeroutdoors3115
      @badgeroutdoors3115 9 місяців тому

      Yep, I often look like a knob, but at 50+ I dont care 😂. Ham radio is a ‘prepper’ thing of mine. The VHF or UHF ones are local only, and although a good back up family system, it is a bit extreme. Interesting though and I may take it further. If you want long range then you need HF radio, so maybe CB radio or HF Ham radio. Then you get big antenna and long range comms but it is reasonable cheap.. I have spoken to the US in the evenings and Eastern Europe in the AM. Quite amazing and always astonished at the ranges without the internet, even though I have used in the military for years.

      You can go all the way down, but at my age there is no getting back up. A hammock setup for a bike is my kinda problem. Done some bikepacking through Wales, Scotland and across France and I quite agree that a hammock setup on a bike is tricky. Summer is an option in the UK, but winter needs a big rig (like your Surely). Still need an under-quilt, but with some dosh you can get something small enough. Hammock I'd recommend is the Cocoon with a bug net in the summer. Can't get lighter from all my hunting unless you bin the bug net and go for a Hummingbird. Both will work in the winter, but be careful with the material. Then you need a tarp, but i've gone for a rain fly from Hennessy - works just. An easy option is a Hennessy Hammock with inbuilt tarp, then more on an under-quilt. No cheap options from all my hunting for the bike to keep it comfy (>10ft) and still 30% extra weight on a bivy or lightish tent. As ever, comfort on the bike verses comfort off.

    I love a top quilt, but then again I don’t ever go to the ground. I also have the Warbonnet mini-fly and thanks to one of your earlier videos I bought a Superior Gear 30F hammock about a year ago which has become my favorite over the XLC I was using-it’s more comfortable due to less calf ridge. You could try the Superior Gear top quilt and that way you would also have an additional bottom quilt that you could snap on if you ever needed more insulation since it doubles as a top quilt and bottom quilt. I have one and I snap it to the bottom when it’s going to be extra cold and then use a different top quilt. Thanks for your videos!

    More practice on the 5 W's before entering a Confined area required..It was clear these were not as committed to memory as required. They are bold int he FRCs.. ;-)

    Nice video how do you record and edit?

      A long old process. Record about 3 times as much as you see, then slowly edit down at home. Takes ages.

    Cant see the point in a biva iuse the msr one person tent

      Agree, that my MSR is lighter and more space, but a Bivy is bomb proof in bad weather and low profile stealthy. If I had one choice, it would be a tent, but a bivy has its place and closer to sleeping under the stars.

    Nice review, and view. I don’t know of any hammock that doesn’t give you a wall of fabric on your non-head side. I own Dutch’s Chameleon, and WB Eldorado. The Chameleon has the clips for the under quilt, which is nice. It’s also a little more stretchy. The Eldorado has the net pullout, the Chameleon has a pull out but lower. On the Hammock Gear site, their hammock looks low cut on the sides, but I’ve never actually seen one. The double continuous loop is a good idea. I put a 16” loop on the inside at the head end to pull myself up if I slip into the coziness to much. So many ways to hang a hammock, it’s up to what works best for you. I’m a whoopee sling guy, when I can get trees far enough apart. Cheers from Chicago.

      This is what I love about hammocks, all the options. I'm a big fan of low cut sides, which I have on my WB XLC. I want to open my eyes and have a clear view out. PS - love your idea of an inverted loop to pull yourself up. Thanks for watching Chicago.

    .. Chance of being seen ?? Do people tend to camp and walk in a military firing range ?? Gee , seems safe to me ....

      Its only active at certain times and the public has full access outside the firings. I'd never be there within firing times, although this is very close to the bath around the perimeter, plus they cant shoot at night. So long as I cant hear the crack of the bullet, i'll be fine.

    .. OH-NO !! You grabbed the wife's new baking pan ,, hope you plan on staying out a few nights .. lol .. ... Good to see the clearing of the forest floor for campfire ,, contained or not .. (a pet peeve of mine) ,, most don't do this and as a creator , it's a good chance to teach .... only takes an ember or stick to slide off to start a forest fire with dry leaves ,, twigs and such ... .. As a change from the pan ,, there is a few put together portable campfire kits on the market that look very good for backpacking .... Here in the mid US , many insects create ground holes ,, but I find many are from ground wasps ,, yellow jackets .. out in the clear or against/under a downed log ....

      Yeah, if its dry then I go for clearing around the fire as best I can. If its wet (which happens alot here) then no as bothered. I do use wood stoves quite often if im in any doubt. Yes, those holes foxed me. Now you mention yellow jackets, I know our bumble bees dig themselves in at night. Maybe thats it. If it were yellow jackets Im not sure I'd have got through the night - they look nasty.

    .. Great looking set up... Going in to a Hammock next season ,, still undecided on which ,, too many to pick from ... Like the names of your beers in UK ,, maybe the makers chug down a few before picking on a name .... Did you like this system or prefer another ?? .. I can only buy One set up so having to consider opinions of others experience ... Stay Safe and enjoy ..

      I would love to invent the best system. I'd take the Hennessey idea of a built in tarp (works well and so simple), with with the bug net from the one wind hammock (easy to stow/add), with the superior gear hammocks built in under quilt and the size and comfort of the Blackbird XLC. If I had to chose 1, I think it would be this Superior Gear, just, as it is great in the wind as I hate waking up middle of the night with a cold butt as the under quilt has moved. But, Hennessy are great starter hammocks with so many options to look at. And Warbonnet, if you have the money, are outstanding quality and sooo comfy. Only thing I don't like about the Superior Gear is that I think it is a little narrow, so if you have broad shoulders you may notice it. Can still sleep, so I'm not that bothered, but its the only minor negative. You Americans make awesome hammocks. I just wish import taxes weren't so high.
