There were actually two bona fide musicians in the Monkees: Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork. Nesmith already had shown himself to be an excellent songwriter before the group formed, most famously having composed "Different Drum," while Tork's musical proficiency was so lauded that he could have become a member of The Wrecking Crew, the famous group of session players which included for a time Glen Campbell.

Davey played a mean tambourine though.

Tork was vastly underutilized by the business. Every time I get a glimpse of his natural musical bents... there are recordings of him casually playing the banjo and singing floating around that are amazing also... it feels like no one could see him. So much early seventies pop that is pretty much a more organized, cleaned up version of the vibe on this song.

...and yet in a few years he happily went along with Pool It...

Micky was a guitarist in his band when his agent told him to do a reading for the producers. Davy was an actor in a musical on the ed Sullivan show the night the Beatles played. Mike and Peter were two upcoming musicians in the local scene Dave Crosby of CSN told Peter he should try out for this show looking for musicians They described it as saying At first there were two actors and two musicians by the end there were four actors and four musicians.

He should’ve had more lead vocals on Monkees songs! A great voice and amazing musician. RIP hope to meet you in Heaven!

Record company no doubt insisted session musicians play on all the recordings. Mike did lobby enough that he got to play. Obviously Davey and Mickey sang their songs. Cuddly Toy; Pleasant Valley Sunday etc One of my first record albums about 1969 !

Prefab Four, I don't think so, Michael Nesmith wrote great songs Peter Tork could play many instruments and apparently the keyboard extremely well, and they all could sing.

I was lucky enough to meet him and get his autograph before he passed. RIP. That some pretty difficult counterpoint keyboard. Awesome

WTF ....? I always thought Pete was the least qualified musician after Davey ! What a shock to see this and realise how wrong I was . As a kid watching the show here in the UK in the late sixties , Peter was always my favourite , a naturally gifted actor and funny with it . And now...this !!

The Monkees didn't play their own music?? They weren't allowed to in the beginning. Nevertheless, that piece of false information followed them for years, even after they were doing live shows. Amazing. They were one of the best bands ever. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame can eat 💩.

This is absolutely stunning, I am almost speechless. Come on In has always been one of my favourite Peter tracks and this version is spectacular. He’s such a talented musician who puts so much soul into his work. Truly beautiful !!

You could see him sitting in the living room playing this song with his girlfriend leaning against the wall he looks up and smiles motions her to sit beside him on the divan and share his coffee or hot cocoa with him there is a movie wrapped around that song as he sings it

I like this better than anything l have heard Peter do before.

Both my wife and I are great fans of Peter. Especially his icisive and peotic songwriting. As well as Monkees we have his other albums on CD. We have read many books and articles talking of him. I guess it is the simple fact that folk and blues wre his forte. He always gave of himself honestly and with empathy and thoughtful understanding. You could trust his music. He was a real free spirit. He believed what he sang. He cared for all people with tolerance and grace. He walked the walk. He also acknowledged the better instincts of others and of himself. He was a real hippie. He lived life caring and sharing. His talents musically were original and he worked very hard to get where e did. He was a beautiful optimistic , and generous soul. Thank you Peter for your rich musical legacy. You entertained so many. You smiled your way through adversity. You touched us and became part of the atmoshere of meaningful music. You were a brilliant psychedelic painter of song
