Fanzine Friday: Olympus #3
This episode looks at Olympus #3 from Nov/Dec 1982, the product of Stephen Breeser and Royce Kallerud, with contributions from Ken St. Andre and Dennis Drew.
This fanzine is focused on D&D and other RPGs. Contents include: encouraging DMs to create their own magic items, new monsters, ideas for adventures outside of the dungeon, a new adventure (The Elven Tower) industry news, and an overview of Phase VII RPG.
The fanzines in my collection are all focused on RPGs (especially fantasy role playing games) and with an emphasis on content for Dungeons & Dragons (depending on the year, that could be OD&D, Basic/Expert D&D and/or AD&D).
** Other Early Fanzines Identified in this issue: The Oracle and The Explorer.
*** Art shown from this issue was created by Michael Ni and Bruce Davis (cover).

    It is amusing to consider that getting graph paper wasn't all THAT hard to do back in the day, but hex graphing paper was NOT easy to find... and pretty much the only way I could get any was to buy a book of hex paper specifically designed for D&D gamers. lol Gotta love that! ;-)

    • @AZMountaineer
      @AZMountaineer 3 дні тому

      We always had a stack of square graph paper but i don't think we used hex paper very often.... we did tend to do more dungeon exploration than wilderness so that plus the rarity of hex paper probably explains that.

    • @KabukiKid
      @KabukiKid 2 дні тому

      @@AZMountaineer Yeah... regular square graph paper was obviously far more useful. We used to snag a few pages at a time from our school library. lol They had stacks of various types of paper up at the main desk and they would let you take whatever you needed... but within reason... so we didn't want to abuse it and get yelled at. Therefore, we just all made a point of grabbing at least a couple pages each most days until we had a healthy stack for our D&D games. ;-) lol

    I have to confess, I am surprised at the placing of David C. Sutherland at #1. Personally, I'd have put him behind literally every other artist on this list. Looking through the Monster Manual, back in the day, I couldn't help but be amazed at how much better and more polished Trampier's work was than his. He may have been there the longest, and he may have been responsible for running the art department at TSR during that period, but that made him the best manager out of all the art talent; it didn't make him the best artist. In all honesty, the other artists on this look like professional artists, and DCS looks (IMHO, at least), like a reasonably talented amateur.

    • @AZMountaineer
      @AZMountaineer 25 днів тому

      Thanks for this comment. I always enjoy reading how others see a topic like this. A lot of the outcome in this video is based on how I set up the criteria I chose to use, which favored an artist based on the # of books, modules, and supplements in which their art appears, as well as the overall number of illustrations they provided. So this was not a ranking based on whose art I personally enjoyed or liked the most, and definitely not who was the best artist. If I did a video based on either of those criteria then for sure this list gets shuffled around.

      @@falkon215 I love that artwork too. I don’t have them anymore - when I was a kid I had a couple but we gave those away with my other pick a path adventure books. Been thinking about picking them up but I probably need to free up some shelf space … 😀

    Great video! I cannot express how much I enjoy JG material. I own most everything they made, and still run my campaigns in the Wilderlands. The sheer amount of adventure hooks and random tables included in all of their products are their greatest contribution.

    I seem to have a bit of an anomaly. Doesn't line up with all characteristics for any edition listed in your chart. I thought it was a 6g because there is no survey form and the reference pages are not perforated. But it has 238 numbered pages, not 236. So I'm not sure what I have. Any thoughts?

    You missed the big black box that came out in the 90's while it was still owned by TSR. They resemble chessex dice but had a dot instead of a line to designate the bottom of a 6 or 9.

      Thanks for the comment. I think I cut off my review before that set and its dice came out, but I'm not sure I really said that in the video. I did have a set of those dice I picked up somewhere but I'm not sure I even still have them.

    #9 Is the image that hooked me into playing D&D. Everything implied by the name of the game, all the aspirations of high adventure, were encapsulated in that image, and I spent many hours gazing at what was (at the time) the best piece of artwork in the game! You and other commenters hit on some of my other faves, but I fear that a monochromatic presentation robbed David C. Sutherland III's cover for the G1 Module, "Steading of the Hill Giant Chief" of some rightful due. An extremely honorable mention must go to the cover art from the original D&D White Box; that wizard blasting goblins with his wand while scribing some sort of runes upon the very air in front of him evoked a subtle feel of the arcane not always present in flashier artworks. =^[.]^=

      Thanks so much for your comment. It made me smile a few times in reading it. You're right about the white box cover... that's cool on a different level. And the module covers... I just loved all of that art and I'm thinking you're right that the monochrome cover art probably does get overlooked due to the lack of color.

    Understanding that you still have PLENTY of ground to cover with the Judges Guild, another supplemental setting from roughly the same time period, and with the same arcane funkiness, was Dave Hargraves' Arduin Grimoire series. Fortunately, unlike the JG stuff, Arduin is still under active development =^[.]^=
