Sparking Zero: Blinded By Nostalgia
In my first Dragon Ball Sparking Zero video I got a few comments telling me to play Tenkaichi 3. They said my negative opinions hold no weight because I didn't play the previous games. I wonder if I really am as Ignorant as they think I am. Watch the video to find out!

The joke is sparking zeros quality control issues are common with Spike Chunsoft. One of the things that annoys me is how people always attribute games and their problems to Bandai Namco when they only publish these titles and in some cases losely own the licenses to the property but this game is still a spike chunsoft game not a From Software game where From Softs esoteric nature and jank is part of their charm , Spike are just mediocre developers which is why the game is all over the place in terms of quality. NEVER FORGET THIS GAME WAS MADE BY THE SAME STUDIO WHO MADE JUMP FORCE.

I agree that there’s a lot of bs in BT4, but I realized I was more or less hating because I wasn’t as good / rusty than my time in BT3. Once I got better I started enjoying myself more.

That EVO bit had me weak 🤣 there are people who think it should be a mainstage game at EVO, even if the gameplay you showed doesn't accurately display high level sparking. There was a money match yesterday between two SS4 Gogetas that resorted to super counter vanish wars and insta spark lol. ( Let me be real here, I think sparking zero is an ok game, it has its fun moments but it never will be a mainstage fighting game at EVO, can it be a community ran game tournament there sure)
Obviously it was a staged bit, but if it was at evo it would be a very boring game. Every match would be vanish wars, super counters, and z broly sparking. I'm glad you found the bit funny.
YES. The goal post moving by this game's dedicated nuthuggers is the weirdest thing I've seen in a minute. You can ask 10 different so called "BT veterans" or "Tenkaichi OGs" what the Tenkaichi series is supposed to be and you'll get 30 different answers. And after a while it becomes very clear that it's just mindless nostalgia goggles for these people, and not any actual critical thinking. Even now, instead of any actual criticism of the SZ's teaspoon deep mechanics, they just move the onus onto OTHER PLAYERS for the game being unfun and shallow online. That's not even mentioning the even more weird people that keep trying to vehemently insist that these games are actually mechanically deeper than any fighting game ever released and were overlooked by traditional FG players (which is just compensation for being ass at fighting games, and glomming onto arena brawlers to cope)
Exactly. If you don't like it: you're a hater. You just don't know what you're doing. If you try to explain the flawed game mechanics: well it must be a skill issue.
@ChitinChazz it's the funniest fucking thing too, because I did play those games and I even went out of my way to learn the modern advanced tech because I was hyped for this release too. And trying to call anything in the BT or RB series as a skill issue is silly considering the games go out of their way to make the mechanics accessible as hell, so much so that even the advanced tech can be mastered in 10 minutes. But then there's SZ where you can go make a coffee and do the dishes in the input window of a Vanish and somehow people think it's a "skill issue", and not an actual mind numbing problem with the game mechanics that make it boring.

I saw how much you raged at this and you play fighting games at a semi professional level. Tournaments and such? Yeah man, I think the game sucked. Poorly communicates how to do things and it failed at even making the game feel like the anime from what I saw.
all complaints about perception are almost immediately fixed if you just use semi-charged ki blasts (especially the unique ones, paralysis/homing orb/shotgun) because orb/paralysis gives you a full confirm into a rush string on hit and shotgun blasts away +2K damage every time, sometimes even more depending on the character so you can repeat the situation with advantage, as all the opponent can do is guard cancel or perception cancel the recovery...not too unlike mechanics like reflect in fighterZ on wakeup and all that there IS a fighting game RPS present in this game, but i havent seen any 'safe' combos or a good understanding of the rush follow-ups in any of your gameplay (not to mention NOT A SINGLE CHARGED KI BLAST BEING THROWN) so its hard to actually engage into this "RPS" if you don't showcase any of your options. if you keep throwing rock (mashing X) they'll keep throwing paper (holding perception.) when hitting the opponent with their back turned to you, safe combos beat vanishes, super counter beats safe combos (IF you know how to time it instead of just mashing it, but i do feel that super counter needs a big cooldown on it on failed inputs, not the ~12F cooldown it is currently) and unsafe combos mess with super counter timings and give higher reward on hit, but then become vulnerable to vanishes again, and so the cycle repeats... also, its not hard to sidestep/block/perception the z-burst dash on reaction. if you show you can do this, then the opponent has to use it less or incorporate guard-cancelling the recovery of the homing dash, another fun little quirk that increases the depth of the interactions further i wouldn't call sparking zero a great competitive experience but i kind of treat it like a casual fighting game and i've been having a lot of fun with it after exploring it more. i was on the boat of it just being a casual game but there was more to it than i gave it credit for!
Play zone of the Enders 2 for a good sparking zero style game.
10:46 Hold up, Elden Ring was not another installment. It was a brand new ip. Yes From Software developed it and it shares some similarities with Dark Souls but it is not another Dark Souls, especially when it had a different title and George R R Martin developing the world building.

To me this game needs the endless Mode from mission 100. Easily the best mode of the Series. Also super 17 still Missing... Anyway that destiny clip was great.
DBZ: BT3 really was better tho. Not because of "muh nostalgia" but the games really hust had more soul. (It also helps that it released as a fully completed game. No e-celebs were shilling for $100 unfinished games then.)

The only thing i dont agree with is the playerbase thing. You see, yeah Sparking zero lost 90% of its players......on pc. And most likely the majority of the players are on consoles

I do agree with a lot of what is said in the video. But I also think some of the stuff said IS actually a skill issue(and kinda nitpicky). And I mean this without any offense whatsoever. This is my experience as a Z rank in DP and S1 in Singles: For starters, perception isn't the best defensive option in the game. Super counters are, by far. They're essential in "high level" gameplay. Perception spammers don't really measure up after B rank because it's so easily countered. Yes, the cheese in the game is horrible. And I agree, it's extremely unfun running into people who play like that. The "its supposed to be unbalanced" argument kinda goes out the window when you have a ranked game mode and are actively holding official WORLDWIDE tournaments. Also the recent Yajirobe nerf defeats the purpose of shit being unbalanced. But some stuff you talked about just come with learning the game and learning the counter-play to it and that comes with skill/experience. Ki blast spammer? Revenge counter and dragon dash away (the aura auto deflects all ki blasts). Yes it's annoying and needs to be reworked, but there's a counter play to it. The 90% playerbase loss has also been debunked by plenty of people, and it's also only regarding steam players. Not console. I also agree with the story being dogshit. The main selling point of the sparking zero story is the 'what-ifs' and for the most part, they deliver. The what-ifs are solid. The lacklusterness is also a recurring pattern from the previous games. Keeping in mind that it's not really a super story mode driven game like kakarot, having literal slideshows instead of cutscenes and skipping over huge chunks of the story with it is kinda insane and inexcusable for a $70+ game. All this being said, getting good at the game and understanding the mechanics feels great. Getting past the learning hurdle to the point where you're getting consistent with tech and mechanics is extremely satisfying, despite the cheesers. The game is getting a huge rework come December, so we can only hope they address at least a majority of the communities concerns. The radio silence from their end is also worrying. Still haven't even said anything about that huge, gamebreaking data glitch on Playstation where you can lose all your progress by simply turning off your console. A lot of people speculated that the game was rushed to release along with the hype lf daima, and honestly it makes sense. It feels like we got an I complete game. What with the absurd amount of glitches and the utter LACK of character customization. Both with skills and costumes/accessories. I wanted this game to be good so bad after waiting over a decade for it. But it's starting to seem like a casb grab, knowing it was singlehandedly the most anticipated anime game sequel of all time.
Add on: As far as the "game was made for veterans". I don't wholly agree with the sentiment, but it's undeniable that it played a part in it. The tenkaichi series is one of, if not the most beloved trilogy of anime games on the planet. They didn't make a fourth because, in their own words, there wasn't much they could add on to it. BT3 was the pinnacle at the time. This game is over a decade in the making, so nostalgia DEFINITELY played a part in the release and development. They knew new gen would buy it becuase it's dragon ball and they've heard stories of the old games. They knew vets would buy it becuase of nostalgia. Was a win win. As far as the trunks and Yamcha dialogue, chill out dawg 😭. It's just a bit of fan service. One to appeal to the community and the other to appeal to the new generation to feel "hip". It's not that deep and didn't need a section of the video. They last like 3 seconds per match.

As someone who plays the game to a decent level a lot of the criticisms in the game u made work to an extent, ki blast spam and perception are counter able but they definitely are a bit too free, the cheese is definitely something you can deal with. I feel like the game doesn’t have enough punishment for certain actions. Tbh for me my biggest problem is super counters and vanish wars. I feel like the balancing is a bit off but nothing unfixable. The story mode is unforgivable tho, outside of Goku Trunks and Goku Black’s.

I think Sparkling Zero is faster but somehow less dynamic than BT3. Still fun, but I liked BT3 more. Maybe just nostalgia tho.
Also they heavily nerfed my old favourites Tapion and Yanjirobi from BT3 :( Now in SZ I don't play them anymore

Sparking zero was an enjoyable experience for me. Could it have been better? Yeah. I hope the future patches can clean it up a bit we’re in 2024 so reworks on the combat should be make it a solid game for me
I don't know much about this game, as I've never been all that big into licensed games in general (most of them tend to suck), but I just wanted to point out how hilarious it is that the apparent best strategy in this game is to beam-spam, because in the manga/show this game is based on, characters only beam-spam when they're desperate, and it NEVER works.
The broly mirror match skit floored me lol What was the point of fans hyping up near 200 characters for this game when everyone is gonna main like, the exact same 5?

Raging Blast 2 isn't a Tenkaichi game
Raging Blast is was the next gen version of the tenkaichi series. The combat, the vanishing, the super attacks, etc. Although it's not literally a "Tenkaichi" game, it plays very similarly to Sparking zero and tenkaichi 3.
@ChitinChazz the things you were complaining about, like ki blast spam, losing ki signal/detection, and the separation of skill/ki bars were always Tenkaichi staples. They weren't in Raging Blast because it's not a Tenkaichi game. It's a Dragon Ball arena fighter, but it is not a Tenkaichi game. A lot of your complaints are about Tenkaichi as a franchise and not Sparking Zero specifically. There's a reason why Sparking Zero didn't take jack shit from XenoVerse, they are just different franchises.
when i play against Z Broly, Kefla SSJ2, Android 20, etc i just dodge the ults or prevent them from happening entirely and if i get hit then i don't cry about it. also the ki blast spam isn't that serious just go up to them and hit them 😂there's no way real way to cheese the game if your opponent actually knows what they're doing. i think the skill issue complaints are valid for both the "cheese" strategies and those who suffer from it. and the dropped playerbase is literally normal, most games lose 90% of their playerbase after the first month. people made the tekken example but it's normal.

Personally I would have loved to get a FighterZ 2. I am not even a fighting game fan but Fighter Z just felt so fresh (especially the anime art style compared to the boring 3D look of Xenoverse series). Also Dragon Ball as an actual fighting game just makes way more sense to me than a sparking zero type of gameplay. Sure it might seem blasphemous to some but since all the dragon ball characters are these top tier martial artists, so their characters being hard to understand and master just makes sense and feels more rewarding ngl. But I am probably alone in that opinion lmao. 😂
