Steampunk Journal Give a way how I made the Hardback Cover
I never tire of seeing these fun booklets~ beautiful glimpses from women back in time. I used to live in the south, and love cardinals. Fun story about them as I am Catholic. Their gorgeous red color (males) was said to resemble the capes that Cardinals wore in the church. To see a group of cardinal birds is referred to as a Vatican. If you saw a Vatican that year~ it could mean bad weather or lack of food. They would have traveled in large numbers to find food and have lookouts for danger. Starlings are like that all the time (murmuration) . I love fussy birds like cardinals and blue jays so much. I would use string with glue to add to cards a while ago~ like balloon strings and hair. I don't think it has a name since pins or nails were not used. When my Mamaw passed away, I found an old cigar box full of letters from the 1930's. She had a pen pal in England for about 10 years, and that was the only thing I asked my aunts to let me keep. It means the world to me. I wish more people still had pen pals~ it was such a beautiful way to communicate. My favorite ephemera is antique post cards from the early 1900's. Have a wonderful Sunday. Best wishes~ Valerie.
I love the story about the cardinals and their Vatican, it really made me think. I have never seen so many cardinals before or since but we had so many they would line up on one of the cars and almost cover it completely. Such a beautiful sight! I agree with you about the little books, they are so special and i drought we will ever see anything like them again. Hope your Sunday was also special - Jan
These books are adorable. Thank you for sharing. I loved the tiny envelope with the little message inside!
Thank you for your kind comment. I hope you try making some of these! They are really fun to make.
Thank you for sharing. It's fun to see these little sketch books and all the different kinds of ways that they decorated the pages. You could fill in a blank page and write the date on that page. That could end up being interesting in the future. The date on the front isn't the date that the pages were decorated. It's the date of when the book was completed and made it to Eva, the host/founder of this pen pale group. So, this is how, when the date on the front is in July, that the first page might be about Christmas. The previous December. Like the one that says 12/87 on the front but one decorated page is dated 2/87 (10 months earlier). It sometimes could take a while for the book to make its rounds. I remember buying a Holly Hobbie doll (that must have been a later version of Blue Bonnet Sue) when I was in my 2Os! I used it for decoration. Sharing your valentine cards was so sweet 😉. Have a perfect day dear.
You are so right to about the dates and it taking time to make it's rounds. Love it so much and now I love it even more. The thought that someone made the book and decorated one page then sent it to some one else to do a page and she sent it to some one else and so forth. How sweet is this idea, it is a blessing to be given a change to see into the past. Thank you, Sweetie
Very cute
Thank you for commenting.
02:20 Holly Hobbie!! I love Holly Hobbie I have a few plates, dolls and figurines of her that I got from my family. She’s just darling!! The character was originally unnamed and some people called her the blue dress girl or patchwork girl & eventually the name of the watercolorist, Holly Hobbie, who designed the character, became the character’s name! :D
I remember! Thank you, I just couldn't remember her name. I did remember now her being called patchwork girl too. Thank you so much for commenting and reminding me of her name. You are a champion!
I adore the two Christmas bags or pockets that you already made (particularly the one with snowmen on it but really like how you made the other one different on each side - and that the two sides match beautifully). Really sweet! And the printed text on them really adds to their charm. Yes, I totally like your rings (I typed wings first - w instead of r - by accident but kind of a neat mistake - well you are a Byrd 😉). Putting these in Christmas cards is a great idea. I'm not sure that we have tropical storms around here. The cold weather keeps us sick enough 🥶 Hope you both are completely back to your usual healthy selves.
Glad you like the Christmas see-through bags. They are so much fun to make. Funny joke about the Byrd wings. We are both feeling well and doing great. Hope the same for you.
Enjoyed watching. Love the bluebirds 🐦 and that was a cute little duck 🦆 You have a sweet sister. Best wishes~ Valerie.
Thank you, I love the blue birds too. I have been very blessed with two sweet sisters. Thank you, Jan
Yes, it's wallpaper. And there's another one with wallpaper that I haven't sent yet (that's even better). But, this sketch book with wallpaper today didn't have anything glued to the front. It was blank and the I don't remember there being a red mark on it. I wonder if the moisture caused that to happen. Maybe I just don't remember the red mark. Also, I knew you'd love that paper I wrapped them in. I especially cut it so the little bird would be on it. It's actually a Christmas tablecloth (paper) that is pretty old but was never used. It was still wrapped and sealed when I opened it. I saved it for things like this. I'll use it again, send you some more of it. 💝
Thank you, sweet sister. Love all the little books and can't wait the see the rest of them. And of course you knew I would love the paper you wrapped the books in, you know me well. Love you,
This paper looks like soft silk. It seems smooth and easy to write on. Lovely. As someone who sometimes uses fountain pens, I'll provide a tip: this paper is great because ink doesn't bleed through. However, the best paper for fountain pen writers is paper that also keeps the writing from being visible on the other side. However, I do not use fountain pens that often. So, no big deal or issue for me. Keep warm and snug during this winter cold snap.
Hello Donna, We are warm and snug thank you. Thank you for your comment and suggestions. I will continue to look for paper that doesn't show on the back.
Love these papers. Wish I could feel them too. Yes, the Japanese and Chinese take their time. Incredible patience when doing their craft. Not corporate but homemade. Traditional crafts. Whatever they are making. Even making tea. I've watched Japanese friends preparing meals, and it's the same with cooking too. Like it's all a ritual. I've watched a video of a Japanese artist painting using an age-old tradition (the printmaking style of painting). So much patience and skill! I Love this cover you made! The brown paper on one side really adds to the aesthetic attraction. I'm sure it makes the cover almost leather like in flexibility. I like watching people make their crafts yet, that being said, as far as trying these things myself, I'm a bit chicken to try to make my own journal. I'm better at other things 🙃 But you seem to be good at lots of things. Sometimes it does take courage. 😉
It’s so nice seeing someone else get as excited about paper as I do! This paper is incredible!!!! Thank you for sharing! The texture on it is incredible! I bet it feels amazing! Happy Day!
I love it too, and you are so right it feels fantastic! Thank you for commenting. Blessings - Jan
I think it looks beautiful the way it is! It’s fun crafting along with you. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching and I am happy you are having fun crafting along with me! Blessings - Jan
Who are you hunting, Jan? :-) I am going to guess it is regret. Once regret is destroyed~ contentment abounds. Enjoyed watching. Best wishes~ Valerie.
Love your comment Valerie, you are so funny. Blessings - Jan
Happy Belated Birthday~ did you turn 25? 😉 Lovely happy mail :-) I am glad you left the bottom of the paper bare as it is such a beautiful piece. The nun stamp is wonderful~ might be Saint Joana. I would add her to a tag with a cross image. Sorry about your Sow. Enjoyed watching. Best wishes~ Valerie.
Thank you, Valerie. Yes, the Nun may be Saint Joana. I'm going to look her up. Love the idea of the tag. Thank you for sharing your ideas it helps me so much. Betty was a good mother and pig, it is the worst part of farming. Blessings - Jan
They are cute. Hope your sister continues to send them to you as you truly like them. :-) I love the little girl images. I remember ladybugs, and butterflies were used often during that time. Best wishes~ Valerie. 🐞🦋
I love them too and she's been so generous! She has purchased 35 more! Just afraid of showing more here don't want to be seen as a one trick pony. Do people even use that term anymore? Best wishes to you too - Jan
The dangle with the green jewels would be my first choice of the two. Nonetheless, it's a difficult choice between that and the diamond one. I think that the green stones help the colors of the backdrop pop. But that's just my take on it. Yet, diamonds are a girl's best friend. The chicken feather works and is actually a pretty color. Oh goodness sakes your dinner sounds like it's going to be delicious and no doubt smells heavenly. There's truly nothing like homemade! Right, store bought cannot compare!!! Here's wishing that your pigs sell in no time. I've had cows talk to me like what you describe with the boars. And one gets attached. The animals know what they are doing 😊 That's a really neat pocket that you made with this cover. Yes, I agree, I do like it better. The lace is beautiful and I do like lace (such as a lace blouse) but I'd have to see the finished product before I can say that I like all the lace with this. As usual, it's been fun watching you go through your stash of materials. The pearls match the antique lace so well. Enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing your craft with us.
Fun creating day~ I saw ladybugs almost get used....... :-) It is relaxing to draw and sketch, and just doodling around. Enjoyed watching. Best wishes~ Valerie.
Valerie, It is a blast doing these little books, I love it so much. Every Christmas card I received I will be making a little book from the card then sending next Christmas to the person who sent it to me. I really like this idea, I am going to enjoy it so very much. Blessing - Jan
Enjoyed watching. I was so happy to see the Christmas mouse :-). The stickers with a deer and candle were sweet. Fun idea to use the cards this way. I usually take the prettiest cards each year, and cut them in half using the image for a pocket in another Christmas journal. I still love the fact women used to send these little sketchbooks to one another before the internet. I think the only thing i would add to what you are doing is to score under the staples if being used as notepads~ will make it easier to tear. Also, I would put lace or washi over the staples. Hope you are staying healthy~ I have been a little under the weather this past week. Still enjoying the beautiful snow, though. Best wishes~ Valerie.
What a great idea, thank you for the suggestions I will do the scoring and hide the staples. You are so smart. Hope you are feeling much better and stay inside a the next couple of days the weather is going to be terrible even way down here. I love the mouse in the stocking too, I love the card you sent to me my eyes teared up when I opened it, I can not thank you enough. Blessing - Jan
Sad to hear about your chicken.
Thank you but it was a Sow a mama pig who weighed about 300 pounds.
Precious! 💝💘💖 The flowers, the birds, the sweet little kittens, the ladybug (who doesn't love ladybugs -- nobody).... It's all so adorable.
I am so glad you liked the little sketchbook! I love them and your right, who doesn't like ladybugs.
The heart is beautiful. So neat. It's amazing, the materials that are out there. What one can discover and find. There's antique, vintage, and the new bits and pieces out there today. It's interesting to see your collection. This goes for the 'tools of the trade' that you have accumulated. For a person that loves art and creativity, that's interesting to see as well. I also like how you are thinking about the future, in making these mini sketch books. As in, gluing stickers since they will, at some point, fall off. You're working for the longevity. Because, just like the ladies who made those from the 80's, you never know who will enjoy seeing what you are making today. Cute drawing of flowers and birds.
Thank you for your kind comment and I agree it's interesting to see all the different materials. I love making these little books they don't take to long and anyone can do this even if you can't paint or draw. There is always somethings to put on a little page.
These are adorable! Thanks for sharing! I have a ton of vintage greeting cards from the 40’s and now I have an idea of what to do with them!
Thank you for watching and I hope you have fun making your vintage greeting card sketchbook. I wish I could see your vintage greeting cards and you are right they would make lovely little sketchbooks.
Wow what a neat journal that's full of gorgeous different colored pages. Unbelievable deal! The vintage mini sketch books are so very interesting and fun to see. Thank you for sharing them. I imagine those women had a great time making them and sharing them with each other. Hey, that sure is a beautiful carved blue bird. Looks like it's carved out of wood. It's obvious that you like birds 😊
Thank you for your lovely comment, I think the women did have a fun time making them. The little bird was a gift from my lovely sister and yes I love birds.
I adore the little mouse in the Christmas stocking. Soooo cute. I love that you're doing this. You're just like me saving stuff. The neat stuff like that packing paper and tissue paper. Sweet page you decorated with wreath, candle, gingerbread house, and reindeer. As well as the tissue paper on inside of front cover. That looks so good. I too like that it's wrinkled. Gives it character. The fringe off to the side looks fabulous. At the beginning of this video I thought about using bits of fabric and was going to give you that idea. But, you did it later in the video. It's a great idea to use various mediums. Nice work! I want to share this video but I'm going to go back to the video where you show the mini sketchbooks and share that one first and then this one. So to keep them in order.
Thank you for the awesome compliment! I think the fabric adds a really cool element too. I love using fabric and different types of items to keep things interesting. I am glad you agree with me, it gives me the encouragements to keep going this this direction. Thank you.
Cute little book!
Thank you.
Hi
Hello.
What a neat idea! Thank you for sharing. Happy Day!
Thank you so much for watching!
These are adorable! I bet they would be fun to make! ❤
They were so much fun to make! I hope you will try it too! These little books will fit and a journal pocket and what a surprise for someone in a card. I love them.
@ will definitely be putting these on my to do list!
I think the cover came out great! ❤
Thank you, you are very sweet.
Enjoyed watching. Diamonds are a good choice~ sparkle is always pretty. I had a cow, rooster and chicken when I was a child in Mississippi. I still remember so many great moments with the animals. I wish every child could experience caring for animals at some point in their early lives. Have a wonderful weekend. :-) Best wishes~ Valerie.
I agree with you Valerie. I agree pets or farm animals are a joy for humans of all ages. Hope your weekend is wonderful too.
These are cute, and so sentimental. I wonder if they were a group of friends, or the pads passed on by each person to someone new. It is fun to imagine what each person was like. The hand drawn ladybug made me smile. I have really enjoyed this video and the one before with the jewelry. The snow is still gently falling here in Montana, and the bluebird of happiness is in full regale by my side. :-) Best wishes~ Valerie.
I agree it is fun imaging what everyone was like. Some are very creative and some are not or just didn't have the time but with most booklets each page being done by one person that is a lot of ladies. I hope you you are staying warm with all the show. Best wishes to you too. - Jan
Enjoyed watching~ I could look through bags of jewelry all day. It is one of my favorite things. :-) I would say in order of what I liked best would be the metal oval, diamonds, and then the green (my favorite color). Hope you got some good sleep and rest. Best wishes~ Valerie.
Oh, yes i did get a great night sleep, thank you:) So far it is between the diamond and green, i like the medal one too but no one else does. i agree with looking through bags of jewelry too i love it. Thank you and best wishes to you too - Jan
I love the diamond with it but the green also looks good. Can’t wait to see how this turns out! So much fun.
Thank you so much, I think the green looks good too and I am having fun making this.
I think the green matches the color palette best but diamonds and lace are classic.
2 votes for greens and diamonds and lace are good too, i agree.
Congrats to The Winner!!!
OMG!!! Thank you Jan!! No need to trim! It’s beautiful just as is! I sent you a message.
I am so excited for you! I love this little book and want to make one to hang in my kitchen for all my fav recipes but think I will wait a while before I tackle this one again:) I am so happy you won,
Great giveaway~ wonderful ledger. Happy New Year from Montana. Best wishes~ Valerie.
Happy New year to you too Valerie! Hope your new year is amazing, Best wishes -Jan
The texture in that book is incredible!!! I keep my scraps and use them in all my projects. This was a fun watch. Thank you for sharing the process with us. I’m glad you had a great holiday! Happy New Year Jan❤️
I am glad you enjoyed the video and happy New Year to you too! Hope your holiday was great as well.
@ it was fantastic!!
Enjoyed watching. That was great~ wonderful creation, Jan, even down to the scraps. You fought hard for that binding. :-) Interesting, unique and historical. Love it. I believe the difference in jute and hemp is absorption and strength with Hemp being the stronger of the two. They are extremely similar. I did not hear what kind of book your friend wants you to create for the middle school teacher. Is it for the kids to write in? Sounds like an interesting challenge. Glad you had a wonderful holiday. I was happy with all of my children being together again. That really is the most important aspect of my life~ family. Thank you for sharing this process. Not sure when I will gather the paper, but will give this a try in the future. Would love to make one for my daughter. Have a Happy New Year. Best wishes~ Valerie.
Thank you so much for your sweet comment Valerie, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I'm looking forward to sharing the book for the middle school teacher when I get it done. It should be fun and yes I am sure the kids will be writing in the journal. Glad you had a great holiday and getting all the family together can be hard.
My liquid foundation (makeup) is in a plastic bottle and it keeps coming out bunches, won't stop pouring out, just like that tube of glue that you have. It's such a waste! I'm going to get me a different kind next time. I need to put that on my list. But my shopping notebook can't compare to this colorful (kind of looks like quilting) one you made today. 👍 I sure like that pretty blue bird at the end, checking out your notebook.
Thank you for the fun comment. I like the blue bird too::)
I learn so much just by watching your Channel & listening to your chicken walking around & skwaking all the time! LOL
Thank ;you so much I could not receive a better comment. I do love our chickens but when they are under my window when I am napping...oh the noise, noise, noise!
Enjoyed watching. So glad to see your video pop up, and very happy to hear you are feeling better. I was knocked out by a cold that lasted more than 4 weeks, and fingers crossed that will be the only one this year. This journal process is wonderful. The paper feels so good in texture, and I am always fascinated how different art appears when using them. My youngest loves creating origami shapes for me, from a delightful animal such as a chicken to flowers and dragons. I am a lucky recipient of her work. It has warmed up a bit here in Montana as well, and I am longing for the snow to arrive. Maybe we will both get a white Christmas :-) Best wishes~ Valerie.
So happy to hear you are feeling better, seems everyone is sick here. Bob and I still have our days of feeling terrible but they are slowly going away. Your youngest doing origami is amazing, how old is she? By the way loved the card, it took me by surprised. It was so unexpected. Thank you, dear friend. Happy New Year - Jan By the way I am learning Japanese not as hard to learn as Spanish.
Oh I just love all the different papers you are using! This is going to be a great book. I subscribed to your other channel as well because I love chickens. Thank you for sharing this technique with us. 😊
I'm so glad you love the paper and the process and thank you for subscribing to my other channel!
If I was lucky enough to win this Journal, I'd prefer to have it with different types of paper; So some Mulberry & Some Rice Paper as well! I'd also love to be able to try Watercoloring on a few pages. Of course, Blue is My All-Time Favorite Color so I love the Cover of this Journal!
I am glad you like this journal. i will remember your suggestion about the paper if i ever make one for a give a way. hank you for your lovely comment.
Love your Super Cute Notepad!
Thank you!
Enjoyed watching. Pretty and colorful. Always fun to experiment with new glue tips. I am adding pages to Christmas cards for now, and liking the results so far. Rest well, and have a wonderful week. Best wishes~ Valerie.
Hello Valerie, this one was a glue mess found out fabric doesn't like or work with E6000 so it was a learning curve, I'll give it that. I do love my new note pad. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and your week was also wonderful. Stay Happy, Jan
Hello hello love
Thank you for watching! And Hello to you too.
Very nice hi honey
Thank you!
I live making Clusters & Masterboards because It's such a super fun process!
I love it too, so much fun and you never know how it is going to turn out until you are finished. Such a joy! Thank you for commenting.
Loved this video, Jan! If you get a moment, watch David Bull's video about the adventure of washi. I'll go back and find it for you. He has to get his paper from Asakusa in Japan as hardly anyone makes the traditional paper anymore. One thing I noticed is the way your dyed paper created a backdrop of mist on the mountain if you wanted to paint an Asian theme. Great mix of paper from tissue paper to mulberry. If you use a dry layering technique~ rice or mulberry paper will work great. Can you tell I am excited about this topic? :-) If I were to win a Japanese accordion journal from you~ mulberry, rice and bamboo would be fun to experiment with. Hope others get a chance to watch. Best wishes~ Valerie. David Bull video~ ua-cam.com/video/xUpLl7BZ_JY/v-deo.htmlsi=mTVs7s2uWCQ2vZKf
