It isn't what you think it to be. When you look at the Bible, you can't place the modern mindset in it, you have to remember people had a different way of thinking back in those times. Tamar married the first son of Judah, so when he died, the tradition went that his "descendants" would continue through his brother (the second) which explains why Tamar married Judah's second son. Unfortunately, the second son didn't want to fulfill his duty and committed an act considered an abomination because life is and was sacred. So denying the tradition, and denying Tamar's chance to be a mother and fulfilling her duty as a woman, was a selfish decision of the second son which is why he died. Now Selah, the third son was too young to marry, so when Judah sent Tamar back to her father's house it was seen as shameful. She was under that wing of a family who sent her back home and that didn't really secure much of Tamar's future. See, many women might find this offensive nowadays, but in "bible" times, women were secure and safe under the family they were married into. Tamar only had her father, nobody else, so if her father died, where would she go? She wouldn't have been able to go back without a reason to unless she was permitted back by Judah. The rest of the story is basically Judah not keeping his promise that Tamar would marry Selah. Promises mattered. So promising Tamar that she would marry Selah but to wait for a few more years and then not have her come back was Judah's fault. And it explains why Tamar went to the extreme, in order to make her future secure and not be reduced to a prostitute for the rest of her life after her father dies. All in all, she got what every common woman back then would be happy to be in. The story of Tamar, among others, may be seen as taboo in the Christian community but I personally think it's the most fascinating stories. Tamar was a strong woman, and she didn't sit around and wait for miracle. She had to do what she could to survive at the time, and in the process, she was blessed with twins but most importantly secured in Judah's family/home.

@@azubliss I know she's strong, especially in that time and I'm not putting a modern mindset on it. It's just the thought of it is very gross to me and the waiting for Judah's youngest son to grow up is even grosser. But I understand the message, God can get his will in any situation no matter how messy it is. And her testimony is fascinating definitely because I wouldn't know what to do if I were in that situation.

​@@summerrose8110 Well, you do seem to place a modern mindset to it because you keep saying it's gross being passed around, but just as I have explained it wasn't like that. If Tamar would have refused to marry the second son, she would have placed herself in a worse position, a woman without security would lead a life much different life than a woman secure in a household. Another example of this is from the book of Ruth. She was a widow like Tamar and had to marry the closest kin in Mahlon's family. It wasn't a question of someone choice, because in fact Onan probably didn't even want to marry Tamar either. Perhaps he had hatred for his brother which could possibly be another explanation why he refused to impregnate Tamar. As for Selah, he had to be of a marriageable age to marry her. Back in those days it wasn't uncommon for a young man (or rather a man some years younger than his wife) to marry an older woman. To respond to that last part in your comment, we don't live in those kind of times anymore obviously. Women have more choice and opportunities than women did back in the day, even if there were some who could be branded as "rebels" but in fact made a statement to the kind of world they lived in with what they did. Now, a woman's security doesn't necessarily have to be through marrying a man, even though the notion does have some comfort. But even if she is alone, she still has to know how to defend herself and her children.
