Merry Christmas: Big Snowfall & Alba makes Snow Angels.
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Рік тому
We had a big snowfall here last Sunday so Alba and I took a long walk to the pub. The charity she is from, Galgos Del Sol, had recently received some criticism about sending Galgos (traditionally shorter haired with very little fat) to cold countries such as Finland. So this video was a little riposte, to say that some of them, such as Alba, love nothing more than a day in the snow. All filmed ...

Back in 2018 we made a pilot about the need to leave the city and start a new life in the countryside. No-one wanted to commission it, primarily because none of us has tons of Instagram followers, but now, in 2020, the premise seems far more relevant as hordes of people are making the exodus to a greener, more pleasant life. Are they ready for 4pm February darkness and the lack of street lights...

At the beginning of September I set out to test a 2020 Riese & Muller Load 60 which I've converted into a bike-packing monster. My dog Alba joined me running 20-30 miles a day (as advised as safe by my vet). We wild camped and met many great people along the way who kindly let us charge the bike at their pubs and places of work. If anyone is keen to know more about our kit list or what we thoug...

    Love your videos, I'm taking my 80lb 12 year old dog for her first ride this friday, planning to buy the load 75. What kind of harness do you use with Alba and where do you attach it to the bike? Cheers, Leslie (& Luka)

    • @the_search
      @the_search 3 місяці тому

      Hi Leslie. The Load has tons of attachment points. Personally I don't tie Alba in. My thinking is that it's a big heavy bike and if we were to have a crash I wouldn't want me or her to be attached to it. On all my other bikes I wear clip in pedals but not on the Load because of this. We've only once had one small crash and we both kinda jumped and were ok. She got used to getting in and out pretty quickly so has never needed a harness... but that's just my view....

    Too many cargo bike adverts focus on carrying 3 kids or 100kg of shit from B&Q but really there's no better reason to buy one than being able to cycle around Snowdonia with your dog. Absolutely sold.

    • @the_search
      @the_search 3 місяці тому

      Hey, sorry for the lack of reply - I was doing about 70 to 80 miles a day mainly off road but I was charging at lunchtime when stopping for lunch. BUT I had one of the batteries replaced soon after as it wasn't working (under Bosch warranty) so I can't really say. Nowadays I easily get 70 miles out of the bike if riding on a mix of Eco and Tour. I hope that helps!

    Do you secure your dog in the bike? How would you recommend to secure the harness to the box?

    • @the_search
      @the_search 6 місяців тому

      Hey Eric, I don't secure her in. I did initially but now I don't need to. My thinking with it is... I don't want to be secured to a bike that big - so I don't wear clip in pedals. If I crash I'd want to be able to launch away from the bike and I go with that with Alba, I don't see a benefit in her being tied in unless it's a very small prang... so far so good - works for us!

    Great video, well done! I’m based in The Netherlands and considering a Bullitt for multiple reasons, one being the transportation of our Podenco Ibicenco. I recognised your dog as a Galgo immediately, pink nose pretty much gave it away directly 😊 She’s really relaxed, our Podenco Ollie is more nervous, which makes me think a lot about the crate/box/basket I will make/get for him in the cargo area. Can you tell something about your considerations about that? Did you try or do you use other setups as well? Thanks! Martijn, The Netherlands

    • @rufusexton
      @rufusexton Рік тому

      Thanks Martijn! I tried the Packster before this and just made her sit in it while stationery - fed her some treats... then I used a harness to keep her in... but after a while she understood how it all worked... she prematurely jumped out once on an off road track and had a little spill... but since then she's been fine. I don't wear clip in pedals and I feel the same about Alba - if we were to have a crash, I would want to not be attached to the big bike.... and so I don't harness her in anymore... hope that helps and good luck!

    I found another set-up to cargo a larger sized dog, but to me, it is kind of pricey; I forgot the name of the product, but basically you remove your front wheel of your bicycle and attach the cargo addition which has two 20" wheels with Disc brakes on it to your font fork and other minor adjustments to install on your bicycle handlebars and then your dog too will have front seat of the bicycle. The cost in USD dollar is a little over $1200...look into the "TreGo" front bicycle fork trolley cargo attachment.

    What's the range like on the load 60? On average peddle assistance and a full battery how far can you typically go?

    • @the_search
      @the_search Рік тому

      Hi! That's really difficult to say. On this trip I was getting 45 miles, fully loaded, mainly off-road, riding in Eco. But then I found out months later that one of the two batteries wasn't working, so now I easily get 75miles out of a charge but when I'm riding around here now I'm largely in Tour or Turbo so I haven't done a real test of riding in Eco but I reckon you'd be close to 100 miles if mainly on road and using Eco a lot... so if you carry a charger with you and you're close to somewhere that will help you charge, you're basically good for some really really long rides...

    Interested in how you got charged on the way. It takes hours to charge a flat battery. So did you leave a battery with people to charge and go do other things? I quite fancy the route but couldn't see how to get the electricity without paying for a bed.

      Hi! So I stopped every night at about 6 or 7pm and had a couple of pints in a pub. I'd take the batteries off the bike and basically stay in the pub until I had 100% charge. I'd also ask locals for advice on places to wild camp which was surprisingly positive. Then I'd get somewhere and camp so in the morning, starting at 6am I had full charge. By lunchtime I'd need a top up so would stop at another pub or cafe for an hour. The only place that didn't work out was when I stopped at the Land Rover garage, and then I just chatted with the owner for an hour while the battery charged. An old friend ended up buying the Series 1 he was restoring so I don't think he minded in the long run. I'd say the 'range anxiety' is half the fun - you do have to plan very differently and you do have to ask for help from pubs and others. I found that part of the experience opened up conversations that never would have happened on a push bike....

      @@kevinallen4604 yes that's two 500wh batteries on mine, and it depends how you much you're riding in Eco vs Turbo and also the terrain. I recently did an 80 mile ride quite easily on a mixture of road and off-road, that's was mainly riding in Tour, so the range is pretty hefty, and if you carry the charger there's always a reason to stop for 45 minute shandy and a charge up...
