First BJJ Tournament at Blue Belt • Gi • 145lbs
I entered by first BJJ competition at blue less than three weeks into the belt.
0.00 Stand Up
0.07 Guard Pull
1.33 Guard Pass
3.15 Kimura Attempt
This is the qualifier match of a Grappling Industries comp. There were six of us within my bracket (Gi Adult Female Blue Belt 145lbs). I won the match via points.
People often ask: how long does it take to get a blue belt? And they are often curious about what the requirements of a blue belt are in jiu jitsu.
I wanted to fight early into receiving the belt, partly to test myself and get out of my comfort zone, but mostly because I seem to learn so much from competing.
Thank you for watching. I’d love to have you come with me on my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training journey, if you want to follow along go ahead and hit subscribe.

Somethings you forgot that makes a big deal for many students: the day of comp is the most boring day of your life. You register at 9 am (example). But only to compete at 11 am, then second match at 1 om and maybe even then at 3 pm. Is competing is hard. It depends. I wrestled freestyle and greco and catch wrestling prior to BJJ. So BJJ comps for me are much easier than you BJJ guys that have no grappling background prior to BJJ. I cannot imagine competing in BJJ without my wrestling background, bummer, no brainor, ouf. Also, the better your prep for comp, the better you'll be. If, you're a guard passer, you're supposed to be drilling guard passing hundred times per week, and I dont see early white belts comp students doing any of that, then they go and complain, of course its hard cause you've neglected drilling the big point moves. As Bernardo Faria pointed it even for white belts: you should push your comp match at a level that makes your opponent what the heck is happening, i never thought competing was this big hard. When I was wrestling, our coaches had us pushing our partners limit threshold to the point of getting in their head. Example: push him out of the line out of the mat, several times. BJJ early competitors, you guys dont fait enough, feint, bait, create fake set ups, then boom. Without this of course comp is hard. Dont need to be advance to train baits. Last word: even elite grapplers didnt win at comp until brown belt, yes even Marcelo wasnt successful before his brown. Thats it. Keep up the good work.

I have been practicing martial arts for 35 years and am a third-generation catch wrestler with a 6th Dan in Judo. And my only goal was and still is to enjoy what I do to become a better person. And if I could offer some advice to all students, especially advanced ones like black belts. Please focus on how to study. Forget the techniques; a tree will never grow properly unless its roots are good. Learn the basics of universal concepts, not someone else's bad habits. Don't be a technique collector; with extensive training you will come up with many. Enjoy the emptiness of your consciousness; ego is only a manifestation of weakness that does not belong in martial arts. Get rid of prejudices; it is a manifestation of little knowledge of yourself. Martial arts are not only about defeating your opponents but mainly defeating yourself.

One short quick correction I would like to add: most upperbelts with whom I roll are trying to win the trainings. It does pisses me. people tell me switch school. I did switch several times, but at some point, I'm afriad its engrained in the BJJ culture to pretend to train, but in reality, I observe guys wanting to finish their subs and craving for that last digit effort to win. Nothing pisses more than a purple of brown that literally yanks or jerks his sub to finish me. I try to avoid those guys later.

I wouldn’t say not having a female brown belt is a red flag. The percentage of bjj practitioners that make it to brown belt is very low, and the ratio of women to men that train bjj is also quite small. This results in female brown/black belts being exceptionally rare. I’ve trained in a couple gyms that had a decent amount of women that trained with no issue with no female brown belts. I’m a man so disregard my opinion if you want, just my 2 cents.

Jumping guard is banned for a reason. If she lands with her weight on your thighs you can say goodbye to your knees. In half guard try to get the foot of the trapped leg towards her butt that will make it easier to pass. When in three-quarter mount try to stay heavy on your knee by posting out with your other leg so she cant establish knee elbow connection. Good pass into mount.
