First Look at Barn Find Trabant 601, 23 years since last on the road

Hiya Internet! Today I present to you what has been my dream car for the past 15 years. The mighty Trabant 601. This specific one is a 1987 601S which has been sat getting neglected for the past 23 years and getting covered in bird poop for the last 5 of those years. While there is a lot of work before Henry can hit the road, the day will come, hopefully before his 40th birthday. But for now, s...

Hiya Internetland! In todays video you´ll get to see a confused Swede battle the headrests of the mighty Volvo 850. It is the same procedure for the headrests in the 850 saloon as in the Volvo S70. The front seats are the same for all P80 cars plus a few more Volvos with the same design. The rear middle headrest was a bit of a challenge though as it turned out to have an upper and a lower clip ...

How to Replace Rear Shock Absorber Mount Volvo 850/S70

Hiya Internet! It's shot! The mount has collapsed! I could've been killed! Right, jokes aside. It wasn't that dangerous but the mount has indeed split into two pieces leading to the shock absorber bouncing around freely and not really doing anything what so ever. I'm restoring a 1988 Kombi (estate) version of the Trabi. UK headlights are about £7 each (for an MGB I think), just search 'Universal 7" H4 headlight, it's more or less a direct swap. I have fitted a fuel gauge in place of the 'Mausekino'. The biggest problems are brakes and electrics (on mine anyway) Good luck with getting it roadworthy.

    • @pongsgarage
      @pongsgarage 13 днів тому

      What an exciting project! I recognise the brake issues. At the moment, I can’t even get the rear drums of at all. They’ve become a solid part of the car. Where did you find the fuel gauge? Have you swapped the tank as well or just modified it for the sender?

    • @neilfoster814
      @neilfoster814 12 днів тому

      @@pongsgarage I used a slide hammer/puller to get my rear drums off, they can be a swine. The fuel gauge was just a "2 inch fuel gauge + sender" off Ebay, about £12 ish. I cut a hole in the top of the original tank for the sender. It's not too difficult but the calibration can be a pain.

    • @pongsgarage
      @pongsgarage 11 днів тому

      Sounds like I’ve got some fun for the winter. I figured it might be nice to have a fuel gauge so I might be installing one as well. I think I’m gonna have to try with the slide hammer then!

    • @neilfoster814
      @neilfoster814 11 днів тому

      @@pongsgarage Yes, the 52mm fuel gauge will just fit into the hole where the "Mausekino" is. I put 13 litres of fuel into the tank, the bent the arm and float until the gauge reads 1/2 full. A slide hammer will pull off even the most stubborn brake drum. I'm upgrading my brakes with VW beetle parts, not easy, but do-able.

    • @pongsgarage
      @pongsgarage 11 днів тому

      What do you have to upgrade to fit the beetle brakes? I’ve been thinking of at least getting 1.1 discs on the front but perhaps it’s easier to find beetle brakes, since there’s more of them around

    FYI, if anybody is struggling with their seat getting jammed on re-installation/ removal, you may find it easier to separate the sliding bottom from the top seat cushions. (4 alan key bolts on the height adjustable drivers seat, or 4 12mm i think bolts on the passenger seat. You will also need to cut the cable ties holding the heated seat elements to the sliding mechanism.) I've also swapped the bottom cushion, side trims and rails, so if anybody is struggling send me a message!!

    Nice project, good luck with it! Regarding the ‘rev counter’, it’s actually a fuel flow meter that was standard on all later model Trabis, nicknamed the mäusekino: ‘mouse cinema’. If yours is still hooked up, it’s powered by a little turbine in the middle of the fuel line down the bottom of the offside front wing just before the carb.

    • @pongsgarage
      @pongsgarage 6 місяців тому

      Alright! I didn’t know that. Just made a guess at it being a rev counter as it seemed to move according to the engine speed and not being standard as I’ve only seen it in a few Trabis. Learning every day!

    What many D5 owners don't know is that if there's an awful wet plopping noise coming from their oil filler, it's caused by a vacuum leak. The pump vents excess air in the system through its oil feed from the exhaust camshaft. Many owners either think, or have been told they have some sort of catastrophic engine problem, whereas it's usually just a knackered vacuum engine mount allowing air into the system. lift the revs a little and if the noise goes, it's definitely a mount as the vac feed to them is shut off above idle. It's a good idea to fix the issue sooner rather than latter as it can lead to oil starvation to the vac pump and they're not cheap to replace.

    Well as a Volvoniac myself those are things that I'm quite aware of. I've had a 240, 740, 850 (all wagons) and currently I have V70 II facelift (P2 platform). What I'm most amazed of is the fact, that the Astra J Wagon I had between the 850 and V70 II did all of those Volvo things too (Including the "windows" trick which all pre-V70 III generations lacked) and in a pretty similar way and the whole car felt like a Volvo too. I have a strong suspicion that either key engineers who worked on 850/V70 worked on Astra J or Opel/Vaughall had those cars for inspiration. The similarities were more than just mere coincidences. I drove the Astra for 230 000 kms and I was more and more amazed by details and little volvo pecularities I discovered. I even called it "the honorary Volvo". Apart from the 1.4T engine and old GM automatic transmission, which were very un-volvo-like and both failed miserably.

    • @pongsgarage
      @pongsgarage 10 місяців тому

      I’ve never tried the Astra J but I’ve always thought of it as being a rather nice car. Not dull or boring like so many other cars from the 00s and 10s. It’s more of a happy little terrier from what I’ve heard.

    • @DopravniPoradce

      @@pongsgarage It has an astonishingly good suspension capable of very high speeds, cornering and splendid control under any circumstances on any surface. It has interior quality miles above any VW or Audi. After 250 000 km it had NO wear signs whatsoever. It's a great looking, well though trough, well built car. Everything's perfect apart from the engine, mainly turbocharging and carbonisation in manual version (because of underrevving which auto doesn't allow) and the bloody awful old-ass GM auto. Which is a junk. Otherwise Astra J is one of the best cars in its class.

      @pongsgarage I hate both. Especially a manual. I've just had a clutch go on one. I'm never touching a manual again. Also I love not having to stick a key in. I don't like the ones when it unlocks when you're near. I'm happy with pressing an unlocked button on the fob but then I keep the key I'm my pocket and press the start button. I've had 2 ford's for the last 10 years simultaneously. The automatic without the ignition key. Is so much better for me than the manual with the ignition key. The latter should be going anytime soon.

      We’re all different. That’s what makes us human. One person likes newer more automated cars. Another person prefers cars with more manual interaction. Luckily there’s car models for everyone in this world.
