We are back with Season 3 - Fishing for anything that will bite in the early summer river system. This episode I manage to find some smallmouth bass and a few brook trout all in the same system.

How to Alum Tan a Hide

This is how I cure and prep pelts for wall hanging or using for whatever is required. It has worked out well for me and have never had any problems. The link below is to the recipe that I generally use. www.fieldandstream.com/how-to-tan-a-deer-hide/

2022 Agawa Train - Day trip away from the boys - Be a tourist in your own town.
Переглядів 65Рік тому
We took a day away from the boys to go be tourists in our own backyard. Took the Agawa Train tour up to Agawa canyon. It was a great time but not really our type of adventure but was a good experience anyways. If you get a chance it is and experience especially in the fall when the colours change.

2022 Fall Bear Hunt

Thankful to have another chance at a beautiful black bear over a bait location. We make burger out of the whole bear and use it in tacos, chili, pasta sauce and others through the fall/winter.

Lake Trout Fishing - First solo overnighter with Number One
Переглядів 121Рік тому
Jack asked if we could go out camping over night just him and I and catch some bigger fish. So we hiked, paddled and chased some Lake trout around. Request accomplished. I thought I would take each of the boys out on their own adventure this summer starting with my first born.

Camping with kids can be scary but it doesn't have to be. We are counting down the top 10 items needed while camping with kids outside the obvious. Shelter, food, water... Over the last few years we found these items are necessary for keeping everyone happy and allowing them to contribute to the adventure all while spending some much needed quiet time in the back woods. Hope you find them helpf...
Exploring Ice Caves Lake Superior
Переглядів 1692 роки тому
Spent an hour with the family exploring the ice caves on the north shore of Lake Superior at Sawpit Bay. These are created by the waves pounding the shore in sub zero temperatures before the bay freezes later in the season. If you get a chance to check out this type of magic especially with little ones it is well worth it. Always play safe on ice.

Any lake trout?
Where did you get the furs from
All over the place. Each has a story. Road kill, farm protection kills, local trappers, small game license, use of some tags, and I am also a trapper with a registered line. But all are from the local area.

Question would these hides be good for crafts or would they have to be dry tanned for them to be used for crafts ?
this is great, starting to tan hides myseld i’ve done coon and deer and squirrels but never the full face like you are doing, i’m doing a pine squirrel that way rn and i’m just about to pull it out of the solution
I noticed that you don't monitor the PH of your solution. I keep my PH down to 1.0 but no higher than a PH of 2. Using rain water is best, tap water has a lot of minerals that can quickly change your PH.
Thanks, Tally for the info. Never looked at pH and never had any problems. Our water is pulled directly from Lake Superior, so its mineral content is minimal. Maybe that is why I haven't had any issues. I will start watching pH to see what happens. Cheers.
great video and great hides !
Hair catch would work
Northern wilderness cottages is so much better, remote and no people. Kids look like they had a blast!
First time seeing your video. Great job.. I been using the same method for years. Only difference is I wet tan mine for mounting.. I probably should use more alum.. but I mix up 3 gal water. 3 lb salt 8 oz alum. Soak 24 or little longer. Towel dry really good. And brush on tanning oil. Let sit few hrs. Then freeze for mounting later.. or wash the oil excess oil out and mount. . I will try your method. Thanks for sharing your knowledge brother.. merry Christmas and happy new year to you and your family.
Thanks Jeff. Hope u had a wonderful Christmas as well. Cheers.
3:20 Seriously thought this dude was taking a piss break😂 Thanks for the great video👍🏼 Cheers
U got me... 😆 my wife is dying.
What month of the year was this?
Was late January or early Feb. I don't remember.
Really enjoyed your video. Man, the number of times I’ve driven through that park and said “I gotta come fish here “……
How long does it take them to die? Is it fast?
"And then you can show all your friends how crazy they think you are" This is so accurate. In the country where I live, hunting is not a wide spread thing and don’t even think about handling meat on your own, because "it’s so strange and gross" I feel like a lot of people are out of touch with reality here and push aside where their food comes from and what it involves. I currently macerate a hog head I got from my butcher and I try my best to tan the hide that he gave me with it because it’s small but beautiful. A friend of mine saw me skinning the head and cutting off all excess meat n stuff and he couldn’t even look at it… he eats meat btw. So disappointing. My dad told me I’m crazy for doing things myself at home, but is completely fine with buying all sorts of meat and sheep skins for my ma. I just don’t understand it.
i have the same issue😭😭i feel like it’s just people becoming so soft noe days
The higher you hold your rod tip the shallower the lure runs. Drop your rod tip hold it to the side
When did you go fishing? Looks like September to me
Hey! This is the guy that helped cut up pigs with yah... Funny, was trying to find a vid of an Alum tan and came across this one randomly...didnt know you were makin vids... Hope alls well!
Great video. I appreciate the helpful tips you provided. I hope to get out there this summer.👍
Pool salt is the cheapest and works fine. Also, High Yield Aluminum Sulphate is what I use found in the garden section at Ace Hardware or online. Good looking pelts.
American Stockman salt from tractor supply or local grain elevator, feed n seed. 50# bag for $7
what lake did you fish?
Those are the best ones to eat! Good video
Nice collection you have there . Good watch keep it up 😊
Great video. Simple and to the point. Keep posting. Will sub.

nice bear, be some good eating. thanks for taking us along and sharing it with us. new subscriber
Thanks buddy. Good luck this fall chasing bucks.
I have some wings do you recommend I wait a week or a month or two
They just need to be dry. Once they are cured and hard u should be good to go. Depends on the humidity. Good luck man. Let me know if it works out.
@@TheHideawayLife should I put them in the freezer or should I just put them somewhere like like a just a damn place like for example like a basement
@@bosc9418 I just pin them out into the form I want them, cover the cut areas with salt and yeah basement sounds perfect. Check on them every couple days and add some more salt if necessary.
That's just like taking kendra camping lol
Lol
So cool to take your little one with you out on adventures. My father did it as often as he could and those are still the most beautiful memories I have of my childhood, I guess that's why I became an outdoor enthusiast too ;)
That's awesome Mario.
Nice harvest! I wish I had more time to get one
Love the smile at the end there, Ben!
Just for u Mikey
Beautiful family!!! Planning a road trip with my 2 dogs - ages 14 and 15 - so short 1 km hikes these days. Your video and fun editing brought so much joy this morning!!
Thanks Karen, 😊
Beautiful!
The perfect overnighter summed up! Ben, he’ll be showing you where to fish soon enough!
Great video, nice to see the little guy enjoying the outdoors and catching those big fish! Will definitely be a trip he remembers!
We was there just this week and looks like in the same cabin Fishing walleyes was awesome and my first time in Canada with my wife and mom Next year we are coming back and renting the 9 bedroom cabin there June 10-16 Hopefully with all my kids and grandkids
Amazing place. I haven’t been to Ernie’s in over 20 years. Had so many memories as a teenager with my uncles. You are creating some great memories for your kids!
I was excited about the idea. What I enjoyed most was seeing the excitement of the children seeing the worms.
Love that place.
Magical! I love Superior! I should visit more often (and fish it). I was born in Thunder Bay and live about 2 hours west these days.
Right on. Thanks for reaching out. Looking forward to checking out ur stuff.
@@TheHideawayLife thanks. I should have a few good vids coming up. I just got back to Ontario from a week long trip in Northern Manitoba. Had 4 decent days of ice fishing. Hope the footage is good. Cheers
Hey! Got here from Dave's video fastest catch and cook. Always nice to find other UA-camrs in our part of the world. Cheers!
