TECH SLAB SESH...
On this beauty fall Sunday, I'm sessioning a technical slab in my local, neighbourhood trail network. I've been eyeing this thing out for a while but never envisioned doing it. That was until a few days ago, when a few local riders cleaned it up and Guinuea pigged it. I had to try it out ;)
A few words of caution. If you gather the necessary intel to locate this target. You must realize, in its present state, it is a "black diamond" feature. There is major gopro effect happening in this video. The ingress is not refined, nor is the egress, which is what makes it so fun and challenging :) You will need a certain level of skill to ride this. I'd only recommend it for Intermediate/Advanced to Pro level riders. If you can do the slabs at Domaine Kanawe, specifically the one on 1960. You should be fine.
FYI. Unfortunately there won't be overt location details on this one. This MTB network is currently being run as a pilot project of OMBA/AVMO. Some of the trails in the network run out of bounds of that purview.

      not sure, but they're co-opting most of Nakkertoks' XC ski trails, so probably unlikely.

      Exactly, those summer XC trails are nakkertok ski trails in the winter. Not excluded that a longer loop could be developed… 😉

    The green looks really cool. I guess they will start connecting trails off the backside of the mountain down to the new green soon. Lots of potential

    • @bikeninja956

      Exactly. Runs off the backside down to the green would have a little less elevation change but for short jibby hits, it's perfect.

    Doesn't look all that fun.... Right now. The long green looks pretty chunky for a green.

      Green's an ok XC/Cardio loop. I wouldn't do the blue unless on an ebike, just too long and raw (which I doubt it will ever get fully burnt in). Reward/Pain ratio isn't there. Super nice back country loop though.

    Hey quick question do they rent out bikes here? Or do you think my 140/130 trail bike will be fine here?

    • @bikeninja956
      @bikeninja956 5 місяців тому

      yeah they rent Rocky Mountain enduro bikes. Highly recommend renting one. I was really wishing I had an Enduro bike at the time. You can get down any hill on any bike, but there is always the right tool for the job and an enduro bike would be the best fit for this venue. Have fun!

    Many Thanks John for this video. Wow! You did a great job showing and explaining the trails. This gives a great expososure to Leslie Park. As you were saying, the site is great for families, both Castor trails are good for mountain bikes, running or walking. Their are many options to take advantage of the site. Either staying at a campsite for few days or just spending the day, it gives the option to combine the trails, picnic and spending the rest of the day at the beach. Anytime you are back John to Leslie Park, give us a shout. We will be happy to ride with you again. Thank you!

    Hey BN, thanks for the video of my local. It does need work, that's for sure. I think Forest Valley residents may have some resistance in supporting the upkeep for mtb because of the potential for increased traffic, but dog poop in the forest is fine...anyway. Most orleans residents head for Larose because it's so close. I do enjoy a quick run through these trails though, they can still be a ton of fun. Cheers!

    Really enjoy Kanawane too. Went there Sunday with my new eMTB, and BOY does it do wonders in getting a load of laps in! It is refreshing to see a riders POV that has hesitation, skill, and difficulties that is similar to my own. I have zero issues riding the greens and blues at Kanawane, but the blacks are a different level, there almost seems to be a gap in progression from the most difficult blue to the easiest black. I have attempted, and walked portions of 1960 and Rocky Balboa, and because of that I didn't even try the other blacks (Trail #29 and Bas/Lower 17b). How would you rank their blacks from easiest to hardest?

    • @bikeninja956
      @bikeninja956 6 місяців тому

      all their blacks are about the same, they all have short, more difficult sections through out. Makes it a bit of a pain if you're trying to progress. Go through each one methodically and try to get through each feature. That's how you progress. I do that with double blacks, drops and bigger features now :) all about a nice, calculated progression.

      @@bikeninja956 Will have to take that approach next time I'm up there. With the eMTB, it makes sessioning a particular trail worth it, because getting back up is no longer the battle. Where on my normal MTB, I'd want to get as many fun runs in as possible. That one steep rock "drop" you struggled on I've looked at and said "NOPE" many times. It's the sudden transition that throws me off mentally.

    • @bikeninja956
      @bikeninja956 6 місяців тому

      @@KDubber rock drop where I fell? yeah, you need to take it diagonally so you land in line with the trail. It's almost roll-able that way too. Still an awkward feature for sure.

  • @bikeninja956
    @bikeninja956 6 місяців тому

    can we all agree that transition on the slab on 1960 needs a little bit of TLC... just needs a few pails of dirt and it would be perfect.

    I really wish we had a network similar in size to SMH here in Orleans. Bilberry is just small and many trails that start interesting often come to an impassible end. Wish the trails expanded further on both sides of the creek and further South from Des Epinettes.

    • @bikeninja956
      @bikeninja956 6 місяців тому

      if you're living out that way, it would be a good place to do some quick laps, test new bike settings out etc. not really a true MTB network... I had fun though. I'm a sucker for pine tree's and valley's. Just needs to be 6000ft higher :P

    • @KDubber
      @KDubber 6 місяців тому

      @@bikeninja956 I'm only a few minutes from there and ridden it a few times, I lose interest in there pretty quickly. It's just unfortunate there's no half decent network within riding distance in Orleans, so the only option is to load up and drive 30 min to either Larose or SMH. Bilberry cloud be better if more of the trails on Trailforks were actually passable.
