Integrated Pest Management with a biocontrol agent: leafy spurge beetle release on the grasslands
Invasive species on the grasslands has become an increasing threat across several decades but can be successfully reduced by utilizing integrated pest management options. One option is the selection and use of biocontrol agents. Leafy spurge is a common weedy invasive species, an ignored infestation can eventually overtake large areas for it spreads rapidly. Here we are releasing spurge beetles that were previously collected at a host site. Spurge beetles will damage the root systems of leafy spurge and across time will reduce the infestation, though rarely eradicates the species entirely.

Creating a grazing cell for adaptive grazing practices on an 800 acre prairie restoration project.

Prairie restoration includes multiple management tools. Adaptive grazing practices is an essential element whereby grazing ungulates are frequently moved across the landscape. This utilizes fresh forage for cattle nutrition, decreases the risk of overgrazing, reduces soil compaction, increases moisture infiltration, equally disperses fertilizer (cattle excrement and urine), and provides ample r...
Decomposer invertebrate inventory on Abbey Grasslands

Blue Dasher Farm, a network of research, education, and demonstration farms promoting regenerative agriculture provided a flash-inventory of decomposer invertebrates on Abbey Grasslands in 2020. Decomposers are a critical component of a healthy ecosystem, breaking down excrement and debris in order to recycle nutrients for uptake by plant roots. Consider supporting their 1,000 Farms Initiative ...

June's inventory of wildflowers observed in a one-hour window on Abbey Grasslands. Across a decade, species richness and abundance increased due to implementing NRCS management practices such as adaptive rotational grazing (forty-five grazing cells on 800 acres), integrated pest management (including biocontrol measure such as dispersing leafy spurge beetles), implementing prescribed fire, aggr...

After a decade-long journey of restoring 980 acres of Northern tallgrass prairie, the most endangered ecosystem in North America, stewardship of Abbey Grasslands has been passed along to a fourth-generation ranching family in South Dakota's Whetstone Valley. While restoration is never complete, it is an ongoing process, one that changes alongside a multitude of factors. While prairie evolves we...
