Big John 2023
This is a compilation of videos of Big John, a Missouri Fox Trotter gelding, 11 years old, standing 15-2 hands, weighing about 1200 lbs. He's a hefty boy.
The first portion is from a couple rides in January 2023 in the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. The second portion is from December 2023 in Diamond Fork, Utah.
The purpose of this video is to show Big John's demeanor, trail acumen, and gait to prospective buyers. Sadly, my riding partner's horse started acting up while filming the gait, so he didn't get as much footage of Big John's fox trot as I had hoped. However, one can see Big John is calm and can handle difficult terrain and obstacles well. He watches his footing and is careful. The Arizona trip was the first time he had ever been ridden in rocky terrain, being as he was raised in the southeastern US. He is sound and has good legs and hooves. He was barefoot in these videos.

Jackass Gulch 2023
Переглядів 142Рік тому
This was a ride with Jon Tanner to a canyon near Escalante, Utah. I'm told the name of the canyon is "Jackass Gulch", but I have also heard it called Muley Canyon and Mule Gulch, as well. The trailhead is about a half-mile down a dirt road off of state route 12, accessed through the parking lot by the cemetery. The ride is an in-and-out for about as many miles as you want to put in. On this rid...
Riding Thunder Mountain - Hoofbeats only, no music
Переглядів 193Рік тому
Thunder Mountain Trail, near Bryce Canyon in Utah, was the inspiration for the Thunder Mountain roller coaster ride at Disneyland. It is one of the most popular horse, bicycle, and hiking trails in the state. This video was taken during a ride Jon Tanner (see his FB and UA-cam channel) and I took in early November 2023. It is a spectacular ride, but not for those who are "uncomfortable with hei...
Red Curly Opal, Registered Missouri Fox Trotter
Переглядів 246Рік тому
Red Curly Opal is a registered curly Missouri Fox Trotter mare, foal date May 11, 2019. She is a beautiful red roan and that curly coat makes her a very rare beauty! As a true curly, she is hypo-allergenic, making her the perfect horse for those who may be allergic to horses. She stands a measured 15 hands, and might make 15-1 by the time she stops growing. Opal has a nice natural Fox Trot, as ...
Cave Falls Trail, Yellowstone National Park
Переглядів 399Рік тому
During August 2023, I got my first opportunity to ride in Yellowstone National Park. I went as a member of the High Line and Hobbles Chapter (Utah County, Utah) of the Back Country Horsemen on a ride guided by Rod Unsworth. We camped outside the park in the Targhee National Forest, not far from the Bechler Meadow park ranger station. The first day, we rode an 18 mile loop from the ranger statio...
Grey Penny Lover, MFT

Hi, I’m Tony Henrie, of westerntrailrider.com, and this is Grey Penny Lover, a registered Missouri Fox Trotter mare. Every once in a while, I come across a young horse that just warms my heart. Penny is one of those special ones. She is four years old, foaled April of 2019. She currently stands a measured 14.3-1/2 hands and I expect her to finish out around 15-1/2 hands as her sire stands 16-1/...
Trooper's First Ride
Переглядів 1002 роки тому
Trooper is my young colt, out of Chief, a registered Missouri Fox Trotter, and Calypso, a grade Rocky Mountain mare I used to own. In the spring of 2019 the two unexpectedly got together and that union produced Trooper. I kept Calypso until after the colt was born, then moved her on to a new owner. Trooper looks like a carbon copy of her. I hand raised Trooper, as I did his sire, Chief (who mak...
How to Get on a Tall Horse...For Short People...
Переглядів 2,8 тис.2 роки тому
I was out at the pasture having a good time with two of my grandsons. They were riding my young Missouri Fox Trotter, Chief. He's four years old and stands 15-3 hands tall. He presents a pretty "tall" order for them to get on. I had such a good time watching them that I thought you might enjoy it, too. This is obviously a "tongue-in-cheek" video and you are advised to follow their mounting "tec...
VBF'S Edge of Heaven

May 2021. This mare is a double-registered Rocky Mountain Gaited Horse and Kentucky Mountain horse, certified both for breeding and gait. Her registered name in both registries is VBF's Edge of Heaven, but we call her Chaco. She is 17 years old, but has been lightly used throughout her life and shows no signs of aging. She is healthy and sound in every respect. Chaco is gentle and affectionate ...
Buckskin Gulch, Utah

This is a short video of a ride through Buckskin Gulch, located in southern Utah. I have had this ride on my bucket list for several years and was pleased to finally get the chance. It was well worth the wait. It is amazing! The Buckskin Gulch Trailhead is located about halfway between Kanab, UT and Page, AZ, off of House Rock Valley Road, about 4.5 miles south of US89. Horses are allowed, but ...
The Best Hobbles I Ever Had - Make Your Own!
Переглядів 22 тис.3 роки тому
This is a short instructional video on how to make a simple pair of hobbles for your horse. I have used a wide variety of commercially available hobbles in my time, but find they all rub sores on the pasterns of my horses. Several years ago, my dad showed me how to make my own. I've been using my own hobbles ever since. Recently, on a facebook page I frequent, somebody asked about hobbles and I...
Trooper Out for a Stroll
Переглядів 453 роки тому
Today, January 2, 2021, I decided to take Trooper out for a short ride with Chief. Trooper is now 8 months old and is finally learning to be led. He followed Chief perfectly, never putting any tension on the lead rope. He allowed me to unclip his lead without having to get off Chief and then returned to me and let me clip the lead rope back on and we continued our ride. It was a very successful...
Riding with the Mustangs

(10/17/2020) I got the chance to ride out with members of the Back Country Horsemen of Utah, Hi-Line and Hobbles Chapter, to see the wild mustangs of the Onaqui Herd Management Area, located in Skull Valley in western Utah. What a beautiful sight! The herd currently numbers about 450 head, which is about double the target number for the herd, but the feed has been good over the past couple year...
Trooper's First Trail Ride
Переглядів 434 роки тому
This morning I took Chief and Trooper over to Diamond Fork, near Spanish Fork, Utah, where I do most of my trail training for my horses. I wanted to get get Trooper started in his trail training. He's nearly five months old now and it's time he started going along with me on trail rides. Trooper crossed his first river, encountered cattle on the trail, as well as a pair of barking dogs, crossed...
Calypso, Rocky Mountain Gaited Horse
Переглядів 4 тис.4 роки тому
This is Calypso, a Rocky Mountain Gaited Horse. She is not registered, but purebred. As a dark bay, she is not the typically colored Rocky Mountain, which is probably why she is not registered, however, she retains all the good characteristics of that breed. She is five-gaited and has the nicest canter I've ever ridden. She is a great pack horse and an exceptional trail horse. She is very seaso...

Chief is going to be a fun horse to train!
Just learning about saddling and wanted to thank you for this informative tutorial. Lovely horse. Great dog.
now lets get them some helmets and boots with heels
You must have very calm horses. I tried this method for hobbling a kicking milk cow. She kicked out of it in half a second. Back to searching for DIY cow hobbles.
Thank you that's exactly how I get on it's always been the way I've always gotten on my horses. Somebody told me I wasn't getting on correctly but I knew I was thank you.
Very Fun! Missouri Fox Trotters are very best
Horse's are the ones feeling those rock-climbing trails. If, those horses could talk. like Mr. Ed. They would say...get the F off and lets go back to the barn. This ain't no fun at all...
Oil the saddle
Sold.
You guys are fools not wearing any chaps
You are right!
Thank you
Wow that's awesome. Tracey (Australia)
Why dont you get your partner a microphone? Nice trail fellows..Florida Flats
I AM the partner. My buddy was the one doing a lot of the videoing. We were just using our iphones. I really should invest in a pair of remote mics.
I always liked trail riding but I'm cringing watching those poor horses trying to do the rocky footing. I hope you give them some kind of a massage after all that. I bet it was more fun for the humans than it was for the horses. Imagine carrying a person over all that for that long just for the human's amusement.
Our horses are accustomed to it. We ride enough that they stay in good condition, although this was Big John's first time in this kind of terrain. These rides were pretty tame, compared to what we usually do. And, in fact, the horses seem to enjoy the rides as much as we do.
Horses love this stuff. They're not sissies! And they were not being ridden in a dangerous manner. Picking their own way is a good mental challenge.
Fun wandering with you. Great horses!
Beautiful!
Beautiful! Great horses you have, I can’t imagine that trail on horseback. I love the superstitions from afar, driving home they never look the same. Up close, it’s rough terrain.
I saw this video a couple years ago. I made hobbles following your directions using 3/8 soft nylon braided rope. They work great! I'll never use anything else. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Beautiful canyon! Looks a lot like Zion.
Spectacular!
What a spectacular ride. I felt like I was there. Thx.
Beautiful! Thanks for taking the time and effort to put this together. I’ve been putting shorts on here and the thought of filming, editing and uploading a long form video is daunting.
Best hobbles! Thank you so very much!
Is she for sale?
She sold pretty quickly.
Have you ever noticed they are too thin and cause problems?
The 1/4" rope I used was too thin. It was just what I had on hand for demonstration. The blue ones, which I use on my horses on pack trips, are 3/8" soft braided nylon and they have never left a mark on my horses. Also, you might notice I leave a little more space between the hooves than regular hobbles. I find that leaving a little extra space discourages the horses from learning to gallop with hobbles on. Rather, they just take small steps.
well this is awesome. thanks!
Is Chief for Sale?
Sorry, but no. I figure he will be with me until I can't ride anymore.
Looks like Lizzy's grandson is doing great. 😊
I'm assuming when you say 48" you're talking about cutting that in half? Obviously the rope you have on table is not 4' long. However, when I tried to tie from 2' long pieces it was way too short. What length are you actually using for each individual piece?
I guess that's the magic of video. The pieces I used in the video were exactly 48" long. However, as mentioned above, 1/4" diameter rope is too thin. Use 3/8" diameter rope and, depending on the kind of rope you use, cut the pieces to 50" or longer and trim to suit.
Have you found a way to get him to stop?
What do you do when the saddle slides over? I noticed you were able to lean into the stirrup for a while without it really moving. I afraid to sinch too tight
if your saddle is sliding, the cinch is too loose
@@onlydarian no my cinch is proper I keep it snug I think I’m just pulling on the saddle too much
Great video. I really enjoyed it.
Ha! Good belly laughs first thing in the morning. Well done, boys. Hats off to patient Chief, too. Have you got yourself a new pasture?
Due to some construction going on near the old place, I had to move the horses for a couple months. They'll be back at the other place in June...hopefully.
The larger the diameter of rope you have the longer rope you need to compasate. I would suggest to start with main line hobble knots first to set desired length then work the loop and lock knots. In other words work it backward than he is instructing with plenty of rope and after you are satisfied with your work cut the excess. Mine ended up way to short. It's a good hobble idea I just have to start over with much longer rope.
Good idea.
Whats the distance between the 2 center knots
Mine are about 7-8". As I said below, that gives a little more room than standard hobbles, gives the horses a little more freedom of movement, and discourages them from learning to gallop with the hobbles on. They just learn to take short steps instead. However, there is no set length. Suit to your taste.
Tied a set from 48" of 3/8" rope. Ended up at 5" between the center knots and 18"overall length. Too short for my taste. Will use 50" for the next set. For sideline hobbles I'll try a 75" piece of rope. Too long should not be much of a problem. You can always shorten them by tying knots between the center knots.
Good info. Thanks for posting.
Does it sound different?
This really helped me and even though I’m not getting a horse until I’m 12 or maybe under this really helped me with a western saddle
Is she still available? If so, what are you asking?
Sorry for the delayed response. She was taken off the market. I talked the owner into keeping her. She turned out to be the most willing and obedient horse I have ever ridden.
Thank you!@@tthenrie
A great idea. I will make a set.

What an ideal, sweet trail horse!
Thanks for this, hugely helpful
Incredible! Thank you for posting this.
Spectacular! It's nice that the turnaround point was spacious -- I kept wondering about being able to pass, but not turn around the horse if it grew too narrow.
Wire pass was the only place where that would have been a problem. We went in only about 100', before turning around and heading back to the main canyon. It was quite a ride. Loved it.
Tie, dress and set.
Can you please put the length of the hobbles the center piece
There is no set length. I generally like about 7-8" between the knots in the center section. That's a bit longer than most hobbles. It seems to allow the horse to move a little more freely and discourages them from learning to gallop with hobbles on.
Love bears
Way too tame! Dangerous! The typical grizzly eludes people.
Rocky Mountain horses that are not registered have not been monitored for genetic disorders within the breed. They suffer from Cushing disease. If that doesn’t bother you then go for it.
They pretty much all have Cushings, registered or grade. To eliminate Cushings would be to eliminate the breed.
I would like to talk with you. How can I contact you?
