FISHING THE WILD COAST
Приєднався 13 бер 2016
Angling adventures with Andre Malherbe and friends around South Africa's 'Wild Coast'. We like to explore remote areas off the beaten track in our quest to catch a variety of fish.
Late season Port st Johns Garrick (Leerfish)
Nearing the end of the Port st Johns Garrick (Leervis) season we target these cool water game fish on artificial lures. The river is very silted up making it really shallow and difficult to navigate on the boat. After catching some small grunter on bait and a breakfast at the bankside restaurant we finally hook up with a few Garrick.#angling #fishing #boat #fish #easterncape #licheamia #transkei #southafrica #spottedgrunter #tiger

The Garrick/Leervis are beginning to move back South into the Eastern Cape after gorging themselves on Sardines on their spawning migration in the North. With baitfish being more scarce they aggressively take our lures spinning from a small boat off East London. #angling #fishing #boat #fish #easterncape #southafrica #amia #licheamia #bucktail

On the last day of a 3 day fishing trip we target Garrick (Leervis) and are pleasantly surprised with a massive Kob while trolling lures. These fish are in prime spawning condition having gorged themselves on Sardines and are safely released to replenish the stocks. Port St Johns is renown for big fish and once again produces just that. Angling from a small boat with light tackle and catching l...

After catching some quality fish in the ocean on our first session we decide to change tactics and target some Garrick (Liche Amia) amongst the waves in Port St Johns river mouth. To get into the correct area we must anchor the boat outside the river mouth in the surf line. These large ocean predators are on their spawning cycle following the sardines (greatest shoal on earth) northwards throug...

In this video we fish for Cob (Kabeljou) and Garrick from a small boat, casting lures into the surf at Port St Johns in the ocean near the Umzimvubu river mouth. This particular 'honey hole' is teeming with shoaling fish which we can see in the crystal clear water trying to take the lure from the hooked fish. Port St Johns is renown for large fish and this angling session is no exception. The s...
Catching Chokka (Squid) off East London

In this video we make use of the cold water current to catch Squid (Chokka, Calamari) off a small boat near East London in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The Squid occasionally venture further North than normal to lay their eggs over large shingle patches so that the fry will drift in the current into optimal feeding water by the time they are ready to feed. In this video we target estuary Cob (Kabeljou, Kob) spinning bucktail jigs with light tackle from a small boat. We also try with some Mud Prawns as bait using small circle hooks. A Garrick (Leervis) comes in as bycatch along with a Ribbon fish. The rivers of the Eastern Cape in South Africa can provide some great fishing with a good variety of fish. #amia #fishing #angling #fish #boat #garrick ...

Here we tackle giant ocean Garrick (Leervis) on ultra-light river tackle. As the Sardine run (greatest shoal on earth) picks up momentum so the large pelagics also arrive in large numbers. With food being plentiful due to the abundance of sardines the Garrick can be very temperamental often ignoring the lures we cast towards them. A change up to much lighter tackle can sometimes be the answer t...

Early winter in the Eastern Cape and the rivers are alive! The Sardine run (greatest shoal on earth) has started early bringing large sea Garrick with them and some make their way into the river when the ocean gets cold. We manage to time it right at our local river with some great catches spinning bucktails and topwater plugs from a small boat. This is top fishing!! #angling #boat #lighttackle...

Large shoals of big sea Garrick (Leervis) begin their journey swimming North with the sardines towards the spawning grounds. Using ultra light river spinning tackle we manage to hook up with a few of these good size 'sea monsters' which can't resist the bucktail jigs cast at them. These clean fighting silver slabs push the light tackle to the limit. The Garrick follow the 'greatest shoal on ear...

On a remote 'Wildcoast' Transkei river estuary we target River Bream with light tackle and a variety of lures. Fishing from a small boat to access the areas of the river where these elusive fish like to 'hang out', it takes some accurate casting to get the lures amongst the structure where the bream lie in wait. #angling #boat #fishing #southafrica #transkei #wildcoast #artlure #spinning #light...

The awesome Garrick are returning South after spawning in the warm waters of Kwazulu Natal. Well done 👏 guys
that just look so lekker. never fished the east londen area. can you catch chokka the whole year? something i have never done and definitely on my to do list.
Hi, unfortunately they are only in this area randomly but as you get further south they are available the whole year besides closed season. Flippen good chow
@@FISHINGTHEWILDCOAST how do you know when they are in the area? and in which areas are they available whole year?. thanks.i am considering buying a house in gonubie. that is why i have all these ?. i currently only fish in namibia where we only /mostly catch kabeljou and kolstert from the boat
@@md-xb8hd they are most prolific behind the breakwall at East London harbour. Between the deckboats and other skiboats if they are in that area they are catching Chokka as it is not a fishing reef but shingle that they lay eggs on. Best is to join a club or make friends with other fisherman as word spreads fast when they are around. Boats launching from EL harbour pass over that area on the way out so regularly use the finder to see if they are around.
Ay too lekker. Well done for returning the fish for all to enjoy for years to come.
Thanks Mark
Well done buddy

On what conditions do you catch these Garricks do you go on a west wind or east what's the best conditions to get them
Hi Bradley, I prefer a west wind with warmish water but most others prefer the East wind, so I dont think the wind direction is too important.
Very very brave to post this
Give me shout if you needing a fishing buddy and deck hand when Les maybe isn't available 🙏

😢When can I go with 😭😭

What size saragosa is that .
?
5000 saragosa
I was just wondering ,I noticed u know where the fish are and able to always hook up on ur lures and all ,just wanted to ask if u can have the challenge and try cat h something on those doff clone lures because they catch fish apparently so please do a video of working them and catching fish with them
Hi Carl, I dont have any Clone lures unfortunately
Jisss guys, how lekka is that! 40ho 4 stroke suzuki on what boat you got there ? thank you
Hi, its a Indigo 400 with Suzuki 30hp
One other thing. Have you used bait to catch fish in the River at PSJ?
Hi yes most anglers use bait in PSJ river. I found good fresh sardine bait to be very effective for Kob and Grunter. Worm works great but is hard to get. Live bait is also good but hard to get.
Hi. Four old pensioners are going to PSJ in October for three days. Please can you advise us re lures to take with. We are going to be there going into spring tides fishing from a boat. Are there any areas that are more productive eg near the mouth or above the bridge? Your advice is appreciated.
Bucktail jigs work great but are hard work. Half ounce. Trolling small rapala type lipped lures are the easiest and can be very effective
Hi. Four old pensioners heading to PSJ in October. What lures should we take with to target kob, garrick and grunter? We are fishing from a boat. Any areas in the river that are possibly more productive? Ie near the mouth or above the bridge. Can one pump pawns in the river? Do you have any other suggestions re visiting PSJ? Looking forward to hearing from you.
Hi Heinz. There are no prawns in the PSJ river. The grunter readily take sardine baits or worm if you can get. Under the powerlines near the mouth seems to be the preferred spot for grunter and other fish. Trolling lipped lures is the easiest way to get Garrick and Kob. Small 10 to 15cm lures are ideal with super slow speed for Kob and a little faster for Garrick. If you dont have these rapala type lures Leslie that fishes with me has some inexpensive one's he sells. Leslie 083555 0459. Good luck
TOP catch..one question..do you need a licence for that boat..skippers..I want to buy one..😊
Hi, as far as I am aware you need a skippers to take the boat to sea but not for the river.
Great video and nice catches. Also looks like a good place you stayed at, what is the name of the accommodation?
Hi, that is fishermans cottages at Cremorne. They are pretty basic but right on the river. There is also some slightly more upmarket accommodation in the same complex.
What wind direction and tide did you catch the kob on
Hiya Marko, highish outgoing tide with an east wind and rising pressure
@@FISHINGTHEWILDCOAST thanks very much
Hi, do you use the jetty at the ski boat club?
Very nice on that light gear
Thanks
Great post, what rods, reels, line etc are you guy's using?
Thanks Mark, In this particular vid I was using an Assassin supernova 7.2' MH paired with a Shimano Sustain 3000 loaded with 20pd berkley whiplash and a 40 pound Fluoro leader. My 2nd rod is a Fenwick aetos with a Daiwa BG MQ 2500 and 15 pd Daiwa braid ending with 30 pd fluoro leader. Les uses similar size setups.
@fishingthewildcoast i wonder if you could help me with understanding a garrick feeding patterns. My question would be do garrick feed right after a cold front with a high barometer reading? still warm water
Hey Shane, the answer to that is still a mystery to me. I've had my best catches as the baro bottoms out and starts rising in strong West winds whereas my mates in St Francis seem to prefer high pressure dropping in the strong east wind. My guess is that the pressure needs to changing and not steady, toward either high or low and possibly the 'state of lockjaw' is influenced from other factors beyond our understanding. They certainly can be fickle feeders. The one that really gets me is when they are feeding like crazy on baitfish yet will not look at a lure.
@@FISHINGTHEWILDCOAST thank for the information. I live in Plettenberg Bay where they better known as leeries. And I do find their feeding is more aggressive in the strong east before the change over to west.
same place,67cm in 2017
ye special place
What river is this? Mdumbi?
Hi. I am trying to organize a fishing trip for 4 pensioners to PSJ. We would like to stay in the fishermen's cottages. Either we will take a 2 sleeper or 4 sleeper. What do you suggest? We have a small camping deepfreeze, is there an electrical plug point to plug it in? We are planning the trip in October. What is the fishing usually like at this time?
Hi, the fishermans cottages are very small and basic, to the extent we take two singles when we go. I have not been in the 4 sleeper so cant advise there. The back cottages are more spacious at a bit of a price. There are electrical points inside the cottage. The other accommodation like purple indigo and the spotted grunter are also good. October can be good provided there hasnt been heavy rain which can get the river flowing. Tight lines!!
Thanks a stack. What are your main lures while fishing there?
@@heinzventer5849 Hi, I primarily use bucktails but they are hard work. Rapala type lipped lures are great to troll around when you need a break.
awesome fish buddy. Well done. Even i though you pulled a hook. Lets say my heart skip a beat lol😂. Very good fishermen
Ye thanks bro, real heart flutter😂
Hi. I have heard so many comments on how unsafe PSJ's is. What advice or comments do have?
Hi, I have been fishing PSJ for 30 years now and feel relatively safe wherever I am fishing. Avoid remote areas on your own and avoid the local shebeens at night. The accommodation is great and secure. Probably best to also stay away from the 'jiggers' who are aggressive toward fisherman coming into their area.
Thanks a stack
Ñice good work 🍺👌🎣

Elo like to bay a aquaquad do u know there a can look for one in from port elizabeth
Hi, they come up quite regularly on gumtree or facebook marketplace. There are a few boat sale groups on face book that often have aquaquads.
Hi There , great videos ! Quick question we going to Nqabarha TK end August, is it worth trying backline trawling livebait for leerie ?
absolutely, shad works best or mackerel also good. Just watch the surf as that area picks up a lot of swell.
In the cover picture, the guys fingers are too big for the rest of his body. Something is wrong 😂
I'm heading down on Monday 😊 do you trawl the bucktail? Or you drifting and working it? Awesome fish, well done!
Hi, as soon as we find where the fish are we like to drift and cast. Sometimes you need to spend a bit of time trawling and looking
Great video meneer. Subscribed
thanks dewet
I just want to say thanks for sharing I've learnt alot from your videos and I'm a newbie to the bucktail lure I recently purchased a couple and it worked I was shocked at how effective they are. I'm an old bait fisherman converting to lures. Your videos have inspired me to change to lures. Thanks again I dream of a port st John's fishing trip one day tuning you from cape town.
thanks Damien, its awesome you are having some positive results. Those yellowtail are in your backyard.
What's it like launching from that beach isn't the sand to soft would you be able to launch a 16ft v haul there
Ye not as easy as with my aquaquad. Ive had to convert my trailer to breakneck to deal with it
Great stuff ! The supernova you using, whats best 1 piece or 2 piece. Thanks
Hi, I prefer the two piece for convenience but got the one piece on a special. Super happy with it.
@@FISHINGTHEWILDCOAST That big bends on the that rod on those big fish you catch, you suggest the 2 piece can handle it .Thanks for your input.
@@candalvictor193 The two piece actually becomes stiffer in the mid section due to the overlaps of the join. I believe the two piece is as strong if not stronger than the single
Thanks much appreciate.
Do you still have your Aquaquad?
Na, I sold it to a friend of mine. Definitely miss it a bit.
I'm looking at getting one, any advice for me?
@@AMROUGH82 The genuine Aquaquad that used to be made in pinetown is by far the best. The knock offs dont operate as well. The hull must have the tri hull shape, as in the two pontoons then the fibreglass hull in the middle. You welcome to send me pics of any you thinking of buying but should test first anyway. The wrong setup can cavitate badly. The mariner/mercury 25hp seems the ideal motor. You welcome to message me if you have any queries. Andre 0833205406
lekka!!!!!
Nice guys looking good 👍
thanks
Anyone gill netted the estuary yet?
Not that I've seen.
First of all, a very big thank you for such a swift reply. How do you fish the plugs ? Fast/ Slow/ jerking? Dropshot off Tiny's rock - Deep and slow/ Fast near the top. What about hooking up on the rocks when using a slow deep retrieval?
The plugs are the easiest as they cast well and just a standard medium pace retrieval. Dropshots off the back and Tiny's. Try all different speeds but the garrick generally prefer medium fast. weedless dropshots are ideal because you don't get snagged in the rocks. I think Bilimoria may sell them ready rigged up. Good luck.
