Isn’t there a road from nagaubo to ceiba that’s kind of in the jungle like this? Not this bad but I remember it being similar.

I lived in the Bundy Barracks in 72 and 73 when I was a Hospital Corpsman stationed at the old hospital. I was hoping the video would show the barracks and the hospital. It's sad how they abandoned the base and let the jungle take over. I remember eating at the Mariposa and partying at the EM club.

❤ When I first came on board we went to check in at admin. then we were taken to the old barracks in Bundy. My husband and I saw Stars Wars when it first came out. It had a family room in the back it was sound proof and we took our baby with us. Thank you for sharing. Oh and in that area you could rent cars. On base only you got VW beetles and off base you got to choose from different cars. Our first car there when we bought one was a 1964 Toyota Corolla. Only paid $500 for it. Great little car. These bring back so many memories. I wish I could locate some of the people we were stationed with there.

Wow Sammy. It's amazing how far mother nature has reclaimed the land. That whole drive (Bennington) was open and maintained as far back as possible. Many beers at the lodge on the greens. They had a great little pizza place up there as well. Miss it. Is Tarawa opened to traffic all the way to Forestall and Langley?

We used to get on the bus in the housing area and take it to the golf course and go play golf when we were 11 to 13 years old. No adults. We play and then have a soda and them catch the bus back home. Also used to spend time and the stables (again without adults-riding the bus).

Wow, so much has grown up! I remember the movie theater and the old high school football fields across from it. Wasn't the Mariposa in that area as well? If you took a left a little down the road, you would go up a hill where there were some old barracks that were used as classrooms when the elementary school was being worked on half of my 4th grade year. The buildings were shabby and there were huge rats in the bathroom building, but it was lovely there under the trees. If you took a right, you would go past the old library on the left, then the commissary and exchange buildings on the right, and I think there was a barber or beauty salon across the street from there. Thanks so much for showing what it's like now!

That was a very enjoyable journey! I was trying to follow along using Google Earth - kind of challenging at times. After you had initially passed the old theater and eventually turned right towards Bundy, if you had turned left instead of right, would that have taken you to the Hospital? Also, if you had continued straight, I think it would have taken you up the hill to where the old Officer's Club and BOQ are/were located. I hope you find the time to make it to both the Hospital and the BOQ/Officer's Club some day. Thank you for all of your efforts!!!

Sammy, When i go out of the Navy in 1976 i went to work in the off shore oil field and got my 100 ton license and ran crew boats and offshore survey vessels for several years. Looks like our careers have been along the same line. I also started out as a mechanic when i was young.. great memories.

Funny story - My son was 4 years old and was in the water gathering star fish and piling them up in shallow water. When he came back after scouting for more starfish, the ones he had already caught were scattering and he really got mad at them. I guess he did not thing they could move so fast.

Loved the landfill - Got parts off old cars and of good stuff dumped by the Navy. I still have a 5 inch solid brass projectile i found in the dump. Everyone would leave old cars in the dump when they left PR. I drove one to the dump and left it when i left RRPR.

I'm going from my memories of reading about this subject years ago, so bear with me and please correct where I am wrong. If you look up the settlement of Roosevelt Roads, you will find that it's tied up in the courts of the US GOV and of the PR Authority. There are a number of items that need to be agreed upon and settled in the courts before Puerto Rico can assume control of the site. Chief among them are hazardous materials storages and PCB water pollution. The government of Puerto Rico does not want to inherit the military wastes of Uncle Sam and for good reason. Also stored at Roosevelt Roads are the remnants of the ordinances that were deployed over Vieques. It's all a dirty mess and will most likely still be a point of negotiations for the next 50 years. I humbly agree that the site should be returned to the people of Puerto Rico, but it has to be done in a manner that provides a measure of safety for the people and can be sustained well into the future without worries of cancers, birth defects and other horrible maladies that arise from careless maintenance of older military facilities.

Don's Light House. Haven't heard that name in a LONG time (think I still have an old shirt from Don's in my seabag)! We would start in Laquillo, work our way to Fajardo and eventually close out at Don's before heading back to base! Place would stay open as long as the party was going! We use to call it the "PR3 Party Tour". Truly miss RR. Spent many hours at the golf course. Then Bundy for pizza and back to the BEQ... Good times... Thank you as always Sammy!!!

If I remember correctly. The satellite dish at the bottom of that hill was a project for the the Armed Forces Caribbean Network on top of the hill. AFCN did tv programming as well as some other communication stuff. Across the road I believe was AFRTS. Armed Forces Radio Television Service. Which did radio station stuff. I also think there was a mini mart at the base of the hill of Nimitz Drive.
